| Alternative Process Traveling Portfolio Round 1 2005 For this round I've included two gold toned Van Dyke Brown prints made from digital negatives. One is a scan from a 35mm infrared negative. This negative was made on St. Simon's Is., GA. The other print is from a scan of a 4x5 negative made on Sapelo Is., GA at the Reynolds Plantation. Both digital negatives were made using Mark Nelson's Precision Digital Negative system. Neither of the curves I've made is perfect. The print of the greenhouse has flat midtones. The transparency material used was Ultrafme Clear Film sold by Photo Warehouse. After using this transparency film for a while I can say I'm rather dissatisfied with it and I'll be switching back to Pictorico OHP . Making digital negatives using Mark's system was very problematic since I could not achieve enough contrast with the negatives without using black ink. Using black ink requires a much more drastic adjustment curve in Photoshop thus the tonal rendition isn't linear, in this case causing the midtones to flatten out. The paper I used was also probably a source ofproblems, Fabriano Satinata. Terry King recommended this paper to me for palladium printing which I've found to be quite unsuitable, yielding grainy prints. It has a nice surface and holds up well when wet but it seems to be sized very heavily not allowing the sensitizer to penetrate the paper adequately. |
