In this lesson you will draw on what you see to create another personal image to add to your portfolio.
DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
Think about the following questions as you look carefully at your backpack
What color is your backpack? If someone took a black and white photograph of it, how many shades of gray and black would be in the photo?
What shape is your backpack? Is it a rectangle with rounded corners?
What colors do you see as the light reflects off the metal zipper tab?
How would you describe the shapes that the shadows in the folds of the cloth make? Are these geometric or "organic?"
Look at the logo patch. How would you describe the lettering?
Is the stitching like a dotted line?
What kind of a line could you draw to represent the zipper?
STEP 2
Begin this project by making a rectangle approximately 1/2 inch by 4 inches on the back of your paper.
Divide this rectangle into 8 smaller 1/2 inch squares.
Make the first square as dark as you can with your pencil. It should be shiny black.
Make the second square slightly lighter and so on until the last square which will be very light gray.
STEP 3
Now, on the front of your paper, draw the shape of your backpack. Draw it big enough so that it fills your paper. It should touch at least three of the sides and be almost as big as the read backpack. Add the shoulder straps, the hook strap and outline the pocket and zipper. Carefully copy the logo on the patch. Draw in the shapes of the folds. These shapes should be very organic. One might seem to flow into another.
STEP 4
Shade in the whole backpack. Use your pencil to make the shadows even darker.
STEP 5
Use your eraser to lightly erase the edges on some of the folds. This will appear to be the light reflecting off the top edges.
STEP 6
Look again at your backpack.
STEP 7
You are now going to add shading. When you finish, the only thing that can remain white is reflections on the metal part of the zipper tab. Everything else must be shaded in with shades of gray and black. You should try to have 6 or 7 different shades to make your drawing interesting. You can blend this pencil shading with a bit of paper towel to give it a more realistic appearance.
