OBJECTIVES
·
Use variations in pattern to make your drawings more interesting
DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE BEGINNING
Intersecting lines and repeated shapes create visual patterns that add visual interest to drawings and paintings.
Look around and notice all the patterns in the clothing of other people, the furniture, and on the walls of the room you are in.
STEP 2
Divide the 9x12 piece of paper into 16 small rectangles. Fill each rectangle with a different pattern.
Choose from the following list: thin diagonal lines, thick horizontal lines, scales, dime-sized circles, large solid black circles, fat intersecting lines, repeated wavy lines, bubbles, repeated arcing lines, zig zag lines, checkerboard, wide dashed lines, brick wall.
Think of other variations.
STEP 3
Now, arrange a group of simply shaped objects on a flat surface such as a table.
STEP 4
Think of each object as a geometric shape. For example, a bottle might become a simple cylindar.
STEP 5
Draw each object on the larger paper just as you see them. Make sure that your drawing of the arrangement fills the page. Make the bottles and other objects lifesize. Draw the objects so that some are overlapping others.
STEP 6
Fill each object with a different pattern. Add pattern to the background around your arrangement. Your entire paper should be filled with pattern. Notice how each object stands out because of what you have added to it.
