ASSEMBLAGE
Creating a Self Portrait from personal collections
MATERIALS NEEDED
- Photographs of your friends and family
- Small pictures of things you collect
- Pieces of fabric from old favorite clothes
- Odds and ends of things you've saved
- soft lead pencil
- eraser
- Paper
OBJECTIVES
- To create an "assemblage"
DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE BEGINNING
Who we are is often represented in what we save. If someone were to look in your backpack, your dresser drawers, your jewelry box or your closet what could they tell about you? Often artists create self portraits by assembling all of this into what is called an "assemblage" and gluing it onto a two dimensional surface.
STEP 2
Carefully arrange what you have collected on your paper. Do not select things that are too heavy or they will not adhere well to the paper. Arrange the items in a way that makes sense to you. Do not just place them like eggs in a carton with space between them. Overlap them so that they relate to one another. Think about how you are arranging them in regard to color. In fact, you might create an assemblage of only red things if that is your favorite color.
STEP 3
Before you glue the pieces to the paper you might have someone else look at it and make comments and suggestions.
STEP 4
When you are satisfied with the arrangement, glue them to the surface of the paper.
