- black water-based paint
- paint brush
- newspaper
- pointed object for scratching through paint layer to crayon layer.
OBJECTIVES
- To use strong shapes and strong colors to create visually interesting work
- To experiment with the use of water based paint and crayon.
DIRECTIONS
STEP ONE
Completely cover paper with shapes of thickly applied crayon
STEP TWO
Paint over crayon with black, water based paint. Let this dry overnight.
STEP THREE
Draw the outline of a simple animal on a second piece of paper. Cut this out and use as a pattern.
STEP FOUR
Place this on your black painted paper. Use a sharp object and trace an outline of your animal into the paint.
Cover your table top with newspaper because the next part will be messy.
STEP FIVE
Scratch away everything that is not the animal.
Brush off your art work and clean up all the little bits of black that you have scraped off your work.
RESOURCES
Look at how an artist by the name of Rouault has used strong shapes, strong colors and heavy black lines to create his work.
