A NEW COVENANT SPIRIT
Whispers of
the New Covenant (1)
by
Ray and Doris Prinzing
"I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. But there is a spirit in man; and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Great men are not always wise; neither do the aged understand judgment." (Job 32:7-9).
Elihu was a young man, and he respectfully kept silence while his elders
set forth their arguments, accusations, condemnations, self-justifications,
etc. But finally he could restrain himself no longer, for he was, as he
stated in the true eastern illustration, as a skin bottle with new wine,
ready to burst. He directed his speech toward Job, "because he justified
himself rather than God," and towards the three friends, "because they
had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job." Neither the wisdom derived
from age, or experience, was proving to be sufficient. The aged and the
great men were sadly lacking in the understanding desperately needed concerning
Job's trial. Then Elihu declares that there is a SUPERIOR WISDOM, derived
from Divine illumination, not generated by the mind of man, but IN THE
SPIRIT. "There is a spirit in man; and the inspiration of the Almighty
giveth them understanding."
Inspiration-- the Hebrew word is "neshamah" meaning: breath. This corresponds
with the Greek word "theopueustos" which means: God-breathed. "God is Spirit,"
hence when HE breathes upon man, HE ILLUMINES THE SPIRIT OF MAN within
him. It is a Spirit to spirit impartation! This is the meaning in the
chorus sung for many years:
"Let Him breathe on me, let Him breathe on me,
Let the Breath of God now breathe on me..."
Truly, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the
heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him."
For the GOSPEL has in itself mysteries far more profound than those of
humanism, paganism, etc. and heights far more sublime than any human science
can reach; they are of a nature perfectly distinct. Indeed, they require
a spiritual capacity which none but God can give, and without His impartation
these mysteries appear to the carnal and sensual man as, foolishness. These
are truths which the natural eye and ear cannot perceive, nor can the carnal
heart devise; for only the Spirit of God can communicate them to man. "But
God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the spirit searcheth
all things, yea, the deep things of God."
Then Paul states, "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit
of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the
Spirit of God." Furthermore, he reminds us, "We have received, not the
spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know
the things which are freely given to us of God." (1 Corinthians 2:9-12).
It is by His sovereign grace and mercy that God quickens the spirit of
man, and imparts the understanding which we need. The natural man,
the animal man governed by his passions and instincts, the senses of the
flesh: cannot discern the things of the Spirit. It is only as HIS SPIRIT
imparts to our spirit that we have a true knowing deep inside. This is
not a knowledge gained from the "spirit of the world," or the "spirit of
this age," though I dare say, even the natural realm of knowledge has been
increased. But the GOSPEL IS revealed by the Spirit of God, for it IS HIS
GOOD NEWS to man, not a message of what carnal minds, with their traditions
and human reasonings have purported to be the Gospel.
Paul even writes of the need to "cleanse ourselves from all the filthiness
of the flesh and spirit..." (2 Corinthians 7:1). In commenting on this,
one writes," As to the distinction between impurity of flesh and spirit,
we conceive the former to consist in sensual affections, and the latter
in pride of heart, which, however decent we may think it, is an abomination
in the sight of God."
The "spirit of the world" would defile us, if we are not on guard. Spiritual
adultery is simply joining ourselves to the spirit of the world, once we
have sought to be joined only unto the Spirit of God. Our UNION WITH HIM
is defiled by the intrusion of any other spirit-- spirit of the world,
spirit of envy, spirit of jealousy, spirit of pride, etc. When we become
caught up "in the spirit" of anything, apart from HIS SPIRIT, we are in
danger of being defiled, yes, of committing a form of spiritual adultery.
But "He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. -For ye are bought
with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, AND IN YOUR SPIRIT, which
are God's." (1 Corinthians 6:17,20).
It is self-evident that as long as it is necessary for us to pray, "Not
my will, but Thine, be done," that we are signifying there are still two
wills, ours, and His. When the MAN Christ Jesus prayed this, in the garden,
it was to bring all of HIS HUMANITY SIDE into oneness with the DIVINE WILL
AND NATURE WITHIN HIM. Yes, He was totally God! But He was also totally
man-- tested in all points as we are, and HE OVERCAME all the fleshly temptations,
and brought His obedience to the full, to the perfecting outworking
of the will of God. When we arrive at that place where there is only ONE
WILL, because of our covenant relationship with Christ, where we live and
breathe, and functionally are ONE in His will, what a glorious victory
shall be ours. "I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect
in one." (John 17:23). Bless His holy name!
He who "stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the
earth, ( also) formeth the spirit of man within him." (Zechariah 12:1).
Externally
and INTERNALLY He is the Creator. And in the bringing forth of His
New Covenant dispensation, He is certainly working deep in our spirit.
Indeed, " A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put
within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and
I will give you an heart of flesh. AND I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU,
and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments, and
do them." (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
A NEW SPIRIT --His Spirit, yes, but dwelling in us, and in such a UNION
with our spirit, that this ours/His becomes ONE NEW SPIRIT. Not two
spirits dwelling in the same house, His Spirit, our spirit, but MERGED
INTO ONENESS, so that it is ONE SPIRIT which fulfills all the counsel of
His will. Then we will walk in HIS statutes, and keep HIS judgments. For
His indwelling Spirit becomes the sufficiency for all things.
HE takes away the stony heart-- just as He takes away the whole first covenant
which was written upon tablets of stone. No longer are we under the ministration
of condemnation and death, for the whole ministration has been changed,
INTO THE SPIRIT OF HIS LIFE.
God knew the limitations of the first covenant even while He gave it. It
was limited in its action, accomplishment, and duration. He also knew the
limitations of man, unable to keep the law which was given to them. Thus,
EVEN THEN, we hear the cry from the heart of God. "0 that there were such
an heart in them, that they would fear Me, and keep all My commandments
always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever."
(Deuteronomy 5:29).
All of the outward ceremonies, all of the symbols and signs, yea, even
the sovereignly written law upon tables of stone, would not prevail to
bring an answer to this heart cry. It was an exterior working, "imposed
on them until the time of reformation." (Hebrews 9:10).
Reformation-- the Greek is "diorthosis" meaning: a making thoroughly right.
Under the ministration of the law their LIFE-STYLE was not coming out of
their inner nature, it was imposed upon them from without, dictated to
them by the Law-Giver. Yet, even as God gave the law, He foresaw a time
when He would make things THOROUGHLY RIGHT, in the bringing forth of a
new and better covenant, placing His laws deep within them, to be written
on their heart, and in their mind, so that they would live out His statutes
and judgments by their very NATURE TO DO SO. This ultimately would far
excel anything that was imposed upon them from without, for it would be
an expression from their spirit, not exterior restrictions and limitations
which would hold them to a circumspect pathway.
Again we hear the call of God in Isaiah 48:18, "0 that thou hadest hearkened
to My commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness
as the ways of the sea."
What a peace! Peace as a river! What righteousness-- as the waves of the
sea! But it was not then experientially theirs because they knew not the
Prince of Peace, nor had they a heart to walk in His way. Tremendous changes
would be required before they could know this blessing and victory.
Jesus knew this WILL-DESIRE of the Father, and cried out, "0 Jerusalem,
Jerusalem ... how often would I have gathered thy children together..."
(Matthew 23:37). And HE WEPT over them, "Saying, If thou hadest known, even
thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong to thy peace."
(Luke 19:42).
But they did not KNOW-- the Greek is "ginosko" meaning: to know
by experience. They did not have an internal experiential knowledge of
Him, and His peace, nor of His way. "Which none of the princes of this
world knew: for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord
of glory." (1 Corinthians 2:8).
And in a very real sense, it was not their fault that they were so blind,
for it was in God's purpose, for a time, that He "hath concluded them all
in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all." (Romans 11:32). Therefore
He said, "Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy,
and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their
ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed." (Isaiah
6:10).
Jesus knew the will of the Father for this blindness, and though He came
as THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD, yet He spoke to the people in parables. And
when His disciples asked Him about this, "He answered and said unto them,
Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven,
but to them it is not given." Then He quoted to them Isaiah's prophetic
word, and ended by saying, "But blessed are your eyes for they see: and
your ears, for they hear." (Matthew 13:11, 16). Only as the Father imparts
the revelation BY HIS SPIRIT will men ever come to really know Him.
When Jesus asked them, "Whom say ye that I am?" Then Peter gave answer,
"Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God." Jesus said to him, "Flesh
and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is
in heaven." (Matthew 16: 15-17). It was by the holy Spirit's impartation
of revelation that Peter came into this knowledge, for without His quickening
we do not know Him.
Yes, the people had the law, they had all the signs, symbols, ceremonies,
but these could not change their INNER STATE OF BEING. And even Paul made
mention that "They knew Him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which
are read every sabbath day." (Acts 13:27). Hearing, they could not hear!
By ritual and rote the message of the prophets was read to them every sabbath
day, but there was no SPIRIT OF LIFE quickening them. "The letter killeth,
but the Spirit giveth life." And they had as it were, a stony heart within
them. Stony hearts under a stone age ministration of the law.
No wonder we have the deep heart cry of God, "THAT THERE WERE SUCH AN HEART
IN THEM... " And God foresaw the day when He would give them A NEW HEART
which would respond to His will, which would worship Him, and which would
live out HIS LIFE as He purposed it should be lived. But in the meantime
He would give them a spirit of slumber, close their hearts, and then work
out a purpose so beyond man's natural understanding, that until it has
been accomplished, man will not know what He is doing.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time; He also has planted eternity
in men 's heart and mind (a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working
through the ages which nothing under the sun, but only God, can satisfy
), yet so that man cannot find out what God has done from the beginning
to the end." (Ecclesiastes 3: 11).
In what blindness man walks out his days, for he knows not what the morrow
will bring forth. Jeremiah expressed it well, ""0 Lord, I know that the
way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his
own steps." (Jeremiah 10:23). We find that the Psalmist also knew this,
but God had imparted to him a bit of understanding, so that he adds to
the thought, "The steps of a man are ordered by the Lord: and He delighteth
in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the
Lord upholdeth him with His hand." (Psalm 37:23-24). Thus, while man
knows not his own way, yet there is One who does, for GOD RETAINS CONTROL
OF MAN'S WAY, and guides his steps onward toward that Day when He
shall make all things thoroughly right. Praise God, our ultimate victory
is secure in Him!
"0 THAT there were such an heart in them..." The words "0 THAT" are from
the Hebrew "mi yitten" and literally mean: who will give? "Who shall give
man such an heart," so as to obey Him, serve Him from deep within, with
all their being. Ah, no man is able to give another man "such an heart."
There are no religious programs, exercises, endeavors which are able to
place "such an heart" within people. Only the Creator, who has formed the
spirit of man within him, is able to PUT A NEW HEART, AND A , NEW SPIRIT
WITHIN HIM. It is a sovereign work of God!
"He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there -was no intercessor:
therefore His aim brought salvation unto him; and His righteousness it
sustained him." (Isaiah 59:16).
Who will give them "such an heart?" He saw that there was no man capable
of doing this, there was no intercessor who could stand between the Divine
and the earthy, and unite the two. Therefore HIS ARM reached out to accomplish
what no man could do! "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the
world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them...." as we
read in 2 Corinthians 5:19.
It was God Himself who gave His Son-- "He spared not His own Son, but delivered
Him up for us all." (Romans 8:32). But not as a working apart from Himself.
Nay! But THE FATHER INDWELT THE SON, God was IN Christ, and thus it
was HIS OWN ARM that was reaching out to reconcile the world unto Himself. The
entire plan of our salvation, from start to finish, is the Father's
plan, manifested through the Son, HIS ARM-- "Who of God is made unto
us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that,
according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord."
(1 Corinthians 1:30-31). All of this tremendous working is THE
FATHER'S WORKING through His Son, to bring us into oneness with Himself.
"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to
the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them
by the hand to bring them out of Egypt; which My covenant they brake, although
I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord. But this shall be the covenant
that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the
Lord, I will put My law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts;
and will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall no more
teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the
Lord: for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest
of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will
remember their sin no more." (Jer. 31:31-34).
A NEW COVENANT, and it is NOT according to the old covenant which
He once made with Israel as they came out of Egypt. This one is NOT based
upon their works. It is NOT dependent upon man to keep his side of the
covenant. But now God steps in and freely makes promise for both Himself,
and for us, saying, "I WILL... and THEY SHALL..."
The stony heart of a carnal man can never keep His way. It has become imperative
that God gives us a NEW HEART -- "such an heart" as able to live out His
will and purpose. Thus the promise, A NEW COVENANT which is based upon
A NEW HEART, and a NEW SPIRIT-- His! When it is His Spirit dwelling within
us, we shall by HIS INHERENT NATURE live out His life. "For it is God
Himself whose power creates within you both the desire and the power to
execute His gracious will." (Philippians 2:13, Weymouth translation).
"I WILL pour My Spirit upon thy seed." (Isaiah 44:3).
"I WILL pour out My Spirit upon all flesh." (Joel 2:28).
"For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and TO ALL THAT ARE
AFAR OFF, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:39).
"And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed." (Acts
3:25).
How tremendous is the promise-- God pouring out of His Spirit upon all
flesh, upon all the kindreds of the earth, "that they may all call upon
the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one consent." (Zephaniah 3:9).
We may build our mega-churches, and raise millions of dollars to carry
out our many endeavors, but, not "Until the Spirit be poured upon us from
on high (will) the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field
be counted for a forest. Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and
righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness
shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness: quietness and assurance
for ever." (Isaiah 32: 15-17).
How often we need to repeat the Word, until it is ingrained in our consciousness,
and held as a frontlet between our eyes, that it is "Not by might, nor
by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts." (Zechariah
4:6).
What poor substitutes Christendom has offered instead of the anointing
of His Spirit. The might, the organized strength and program of man; combined
with its power, the ability to carry out these religious schemes, will
never be able to accomplish that which can only be wrought by the Spirit
of God.
Therefore, while we wait for the fullness of this OUT-POURING OF GOD'S SPIRIT
UPON ALL FLESH, we praise Him that even now we are, as Paul wrote, "Sealed
with the holy Spirit of promise..." OF PROMISE, literally, "The Spirit
who was announced by promise."
All through the Old Testament we find that God announced over and over
again that He would pour out of His Spirit. So on the Day of Pentecost,
when there was an outpouring of the Spirit of God, Peter stood up and declared,
"This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall
come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit
upon all flesh." (Acts 2:16-17).
Peter knew that it was at least apart of the fulfillment of THE PROMISE.
It was God's Spirit which was poured out upon them, even though the coverage
was not upon "all flesh" at that time. There may be many occasions of partial
fulfillment, but we are steadily advancing toward that hour when
it will truly be said, "THIS IS THAT" which was promised, now fully and
gloriously fulfilled, because it will truly be upon "ALL FLESH."
Later Paul made more of a distinction in the timing, and clarified its
working, when he pointed out that those who have received OF HIS SPIRIT
have but "the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased
possession, unto the praise of His glory." (Ephesians 1:13-14).
The Greek word "arrhabon" which is translated as "earnest" is only used
three times in the New Testament, and always in direct reference to the
holy Spirit. Along with the aforementioned verse, the other two times are:
"Who also hath sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our
hearts." (2 Corinthians 1:22). -- "Hath given us the earnest of the
Spirit." (2 Corinthians 5:5).
Since it is clearly stated that it is "OF" the Spirit that we receive this
earnest, this first portion, this pledge-- then all that is to follow
must be of LIKE-KIND, spiritual in nature. Whatever the earnest is, it
signifies that the fullness to follow is of the same. God is not imparting
A MEASURE OF HIS SPIRIT as a pledge of the fullness to follow, and then
later substituting something else for the rest of the inheritance.
In emphasizing this truth of "the same kind," Paul wrote that "He
that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that
soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." (Galatians
6:8). Sow into the flesh, reap out of the flesh. Sow into the Spirit, reap
out of the Spirit. Basic as this fundamental truth is, it is amazing
how many want to cross over-- thinking if they sow some good FLESH WORKS
they can reap spiritual life. Or, conversely, that if they offer up some
praise and worship to the Lord in Spirit, they can reap earthly riches.
Certainly
God is OVER ALL-- natural, and spiritual. But the point remains, the fullness
of our inheritance is of like nature and kind as the earnest. And the earnest
is a measure of the holy Spirit, the Spirit that was announced unto us
by God's promise, and which we have now received. Yes, and we praise God
for His indwelling Spirit!
It is also to be noted that presently we have only the FIRST PORTION, not
the whole, for that is what the "earnest" means. But it is enough to SEAL
US UNTIL-- until the fullness of our redemption is realized. When we receive
the inflow of His Spirit, it is a guarantee that He will ultimately finish
His redemptive work in us. The new covenant is fulfilled by His Spirit.
How often we have marveled at those who think that God has given them of
His Spirit, the earnest of their inheritance in Him in accordance with
the outworking of the new covenant, and then think that they must turn
back to the administration of the old covenant to finish the job themselves.
With utter amazement Paul writes," Are ye so foolish? having begun in the
spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? (Galatians 3:3).
Is it not a fact that we have spent so much time and endeavor struggling
to be perfect when, in the last analysis, perfection is something we cannot
attain, but only something we receive? As one writer so beautifully stated,
"We have placed Christian perfection among the many human attributes and
standards which have been made in factories of our own interpretations."
HE is perfect, and HE is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, etc. HE IN
US BECOMES OUR PERFECTION, as we receive Him, as His Spirit is poured out
upon us. That is the Spirit of the new covenant-- a Spirit bringing us
into His glorious perfection. We cannot fulfill the vision by our own efforts
and programs. But HE has sealed us-- guaranteed that He will finish what
He has begun in us.
There was no seal unto victory in the first covenant. It was based upon
"this do, and thou shalt live." In the new covenant He imparts of
HIS SPIRIT LIFE, and therefore we live-- and do-- according to His will.
Under the old covenant the laws were specific and clearly written, but
man in his own strength was unable to meet those demands. "For all have
sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23).
But in the new covenant, He promises, "I will put My Spirit within you,
and cause you to walk in My statutes." (Ezekiel 36:27). When HE CAUSES
us to love, we'll love; when HE CAUSES us to live peaceably, we will live
peaceably; when HE CAUSES us to walk in His way, we'll so walk! Therefore
we pray with the Psalmist, "Cause me to hear Thy loving kindness in the
morning; for in Thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should
walk; for I lift up my soul unto Thee." (Psalm 143:8). And how shall
He CAUSE US? By His Spirit which dwelleth within us! Thus the imperative
need for a Spirit out-pouring which will bring about this glorious victory.
How hard we have tried by our own soulish endeavors to bear the fruit of
the Spirit. But these are SPIRITUAL FRUITS not soulish fruits, nor
of the flesh. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..." (Galatians
5:22). Being OF THE SPIRIT, it is a Spirit of love, or, a love-giving spirit.
When HE who is LOVE dwells within us by His Spirit, it is self-evident
that He will manifest all the various fruits of the spirit. THE CAUSE IS
CHRIST, and the life expressed also is HIS. That is the glory of receiving
the Spirit, as promised to us in the new covenant.
Paul asks a very searching question, then gives a wonderful answer. "Is
the law against the promise of God? God forbid: -If there had been a law
given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have
been by the law. - Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto
Christ." (Galatians 3:21, 24, 27).
The law and the promises are not in conflict because each has their own
particular function. The law was a ministration unto condemnation. The
promises are a ministration unto salvation. Furthermore, we perceive that
the law was not intended to express God's attitude towards man. God's attitude
towards man has always been one of grace. Thus law and grace are not against
each
other, they operate
in vastly different spheres. The former was purposed for a limited duration--
to restrain man from his many transgressions, and to hold us until CHRIST
should come. It was to "bring us to Christ." THE ANOINTING SPIRIT immediately
speaks the end of the former realm-- its service being accomplished, now
the SPIRIT TAKES OVER, AND BRINGS US INTO PERFECTION, His righteousness,
and His fullness of life.
So, while the first covenant could not give life, it was not without purpose,
but was only meant to serve until the Greater should come. All of the world
of the flesh, as dictated by the law, could not make a man spiritual. Only
the inflow of His Spirit can bring us into a spiritual state. So while
the first covenant was not against the promise, neither does it continue
after we receive the SPIRIT OF PROMISE. "When He, the spirit of truth,
is come, He will guide you into all truth: -- And when He is come, He will
reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment." (John
16:13, 8). Yet HIS REPROVING is not unto condemnation and death, but
unto a corrective purging, that He might bring us into the fullness of His
life.
How much more effective, how much more victorious is the living, when He
writes His laws into our heart and mind, and energizes us to live them
out by His Spirit. No more do we need someone to stand by and hit us over
the head with a "tablet of stone" to try and urge us to do right, when
we have within us THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH guiding us into all truth. He remains
in charge, in control, to direct our steps, and bring us into the fullness
of our redemption and glorification.
Not only is our personal living and walk to be controlled by the holy Spirit,
but so also is all of our ministry as we seek to share with others of that
which He has wrought in us. "Who also hath made us able ministers of the
new testament, not of the letter, but of the spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:6).
Able ministers! The Greek word for "able" is: "hikanoo" meaning: to be
sufficient. How often could we borrow Paul's words, "And who is sufficient
for these things?" (2 Corinthians 2:16). We see the needs, we examine our
own strengths and abilities, and we feel so utterly helpless in ourselves.
Indeed, we are swift to quote also the words of Jesus, "I can of mine own
self do nothing." (John 5:30). But it does not stop there. No matter how
stripped we feel, devoid of any ability or power, as our self-life has
been dealt with by His cross, and we know that in ourselves we are nothing,
yet there is also arising up in HIS LIFE. "Not that we are sufficient of
ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of
God." (2 Corinthians 3:5). OF GOD, BY HIS SPIRIT which dwelleth within
us! Truly we have yet to learn what it means to live out of the full supply
of His Spirit.
We have moments when HIS ANOINTING is flowing through us, and we feel
so energized. "For by Thee I have run through a troop, and by my God
have I leaped over a wall." (Psalm 18:29). Yet this is often followed by
those deep valleys and barren deserts, for He is still processing us, until
He has prepared us as fit vessels, then to be filled with His fullness.
But the fact remains, even now, the only lasting results of any ministry
is that which is wrought BY THE SPIRIT. And how we long to fully be led
by Him, controlled by Him, energized by Him, and be to His praise.
"As for Me, this is My covenant with them, saith the Lord, My Spirit that
is upon thee, and My words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart
out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth
of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever." (Isaiah
59:21).
Yes, the earnest of the inheritance is given now. We have and are receiving
of His Spirit. But the fullness of the new covenant yet lies before us,
when He has poured out of His Spirit in unlimited measure, writing His
laws within us, placing His words in our mouth, so that every expression
forth-coming will be a witness of HIS SPIRIT LIFE. And it shall remain--
IN US, in our seed, and in our seed's seed. For BY HIS SPIRIT He maketh
all things new! The Spirit which was announced by promise, and given for
the establishment of His new covenant. Praise His holy name!
The precious promise was announced by prophets long ago,
A promise-- yea-- a mystery, Though God declared it so.
That of His Spirit He would pour upon all men, until
Salvation comes to every man, and all shall know His will.
Yet blinded by the mind of flesh, men struggle on to gain
By efforts of their own self-will, but ne'er His life attain.
"It's BY MY SPIRIT," saith the Lord, "When I in you shall dwell.
I'll write My laws within your heart, and words of wisdom tell."
"For BY MY SPIRIT I will guide into all truth, that ye
Shall know the fullness of My life, life more abundantly.
What I have started, I will end, it's My work all the way,
As BY MY SPIRIT I shall birth the dawning of that Day."
"That day wherein all loss is gain, all pain and sorrow cease.
When old things have all passed away, and I remain your Peace.
All that I've promised shall yet be, My Word is solid, sure,
As BY MY SPIRIT I give thee salvation to endure."
