The
3rd Annual Sybil G. Jacobs Adult
Award was presented by the American Legacy Foundation to Ray Goldstein,
a sought-after trial consultant whose use of the tobacco industry
documents in jury trials spans more than a decade. His successful
courtroom work is well-known throughout the legal community and has
been
noted in such publications as Legal
Assistant Today, The
National Law
Journal and Lawyers
Weekly. |
|
In
1995, Goldstein assisted in Horowitz
v.
Lorillard, the first of his many
trials against the tobacco
defendants
using the industry documents as damning evidence against the cigarette
companies.
In 2001, Goldstein played a key role in the Boeken trial against Philip Morris – his rigorous research and organization of thousands of industry documents paved the way to a jury verdict of $3 billion against Philip Morris. Goldstein expressed his gratitude to the American Legacy Foundation for the Award and added, "What the tobacco industry documents prove and what juries have found is; 'Liability is the ability to tell lies.'" |

"The world is accustomed
to thinking of the law as an instrument of justice, but not as an
instrument of health.
We expect epidemics to
be defeated in the clinic or the community, not
in the courtroom.
It is time that the
tools of law be harnessed in the service of global health and global
justice."
