Music for the hearing impaired.

RE:      LISTENING SESSION WITH KELLY BISHOP
_____________________________________________________________________________

It is a joy to discover the ease with which music can be made accessible to people with hearing loss when the melody, harmony and bass lines are presented in the octaves of lower pitch that correspond to the left hand of the piano.

"I was ecstatic when I heard the first song. I just could not believe that I can hear the heavy beats and how you put the rhythm together.  I listened to it again and again. I fell in love with it.  I am sure that with your experiment you can help a lot of deaf persons like me to hear."  Kelly Bishop.
In her letter, Kelly is referring to a presentation of four popular songs produced by AURALGRAPHICS that are a mix of acoustic piano and a variety of synthesized tones.  Not only could she hear music with more clarity than ever before (at typical listening levels), she could easily distinguish differences in timbre among the various voices produced by the synthesizer.

She was able to identify the specific sounds that made the clearest impact, and taking note of her preference, AURALGRAPHICS produced recorded arrangements of two of her favorite songs.  It is evident that the use of these refined tones made these new renditions more available to her.

Kelly enthusiastically proclaimed the tunes sounded clearer than the first tape, and much clearer than on ordinary phonograph records.  In fact, when she used her hearing aids, her perception of the music was so ordinary that she asked us to turn down the volume just when we also felt the music was getting too loud.

This remarkable event, to have a 'deaf' listener request that the hi-fi be turned down, proves the effectiveness of presenting music to impaired ears by molding it to available residual hearing, ability to hear that is quite often found in the bass.

Furthermore, Kelly was able to mix-down her own copy of the music by personally adjusting the relative levels among the melody, harmony and bass tracks using an ordinary mixing board and home stereo equipment.

What has been verified are the two simple principles that led to the formation of AURALGRAPHICS:

      1. The presence of limited residual hearing is sufficient to permit
musical recognition and appreciation, even if the ability to
         perceive speech is absent.
      2. The clarity of musical perception and the level of musical
appreciation can be enhanced by focusing music through an
electronic lens, and by aiming it directly at the residual
hearing present in an individual's ear.

"For some time now Music, the so-called universal language
has failed insofar as the hard of hearing are concerned."
