Killer, Destroyer of Cities and Homes and Lives

Holly Hills

It wasn't only the beach area that got destroyed by Katrina. Neighborhoods north of Back Bay were devastated. Holly Hills is one neighborhood that had a good number of homes along the bay and low enough that they were wiped away or gutted. Ancient Oaks is another neighborhood that was badly affected. It is north of the bay and off Popps Ferry Road. Even miles inland on Lamoyne in St. Martin, homes and businesses were destroyed by flood and wind.

Thousands of cars and trucks were ruined by salt water, and as here, by debris falling on them.

All that is left of a home in Holly Hills. The driveway to nowhere.

A totally gutted home.

Many people pitched tents on their slabs and are living there, many to protect their property from looters.

What is left of ruined air conditioners, washers and dryers. Thousands of people lost everything. Everything.

.

Going up the hill in Holly Hills, the destruction continued even past sea level.

A close-up of a travel trailer that was damaged beyond repair. Something obviously smashed into it.

More totaled cars and gutted home.

Another tent and empty slab at the end of Sharon Hills Drive.

A gutted home next to a slab. This home (slab in middle) belonged to friends of mine.

I haven't taken photos of Ancient Oaks, but it was as bad or worse than Holly Hills. Every day I hear about more things that I knew and loved that were destroyed. As of today, they are just beginning to start to remove rubble and bulldoze what is left of homes in Biloxi along the beach and on the Point. Many people don't like the idea of their homes (or the rubble that remains of their homes) being bulldozed and scooped up by huge jaws and their not being able to get in and see what is under the rubble that they might want to salvage.

Plans are underway this week and last to create a master plan for rebuilding. Architects and urban planners from around the country are designing their idea of what would be good for each community and are now presenting those ideas to the public for feedback and suggestions. Will it be rebuilt any differently? Only time will tell.
