Smerelda's Front Porch

Come on up, pull up a chair, visit awhile and meet some folks.
The front and back porch is where my grandparents spent a
lot of time rocking. In chairs, that is. I didn't realize it at the time
but my Grandfather probably relived his whole life in memory in
that old rocking chair on the back porch.

He had a chair on the front porch also, but from his back porch
rocker he had a view of just about everything.  From here he could see
the barn, the pasture, and the barn lot, where the children did a
big part of their playing.  A great many playhouses were drawn
in the dirt there by my cousins and me, while a hot game of
marbles might be going on right beside us.  And perhaps most
important, the water bucket, including the dipper was on the back
porch.  I can still remember the taste of a big drink of cool, clear,
clean water from that dipper on a hot day in the summertime.

We all seemed to gather on the porch, whether in the morning
before beginning the day, or in the evening at the close of day.
I can still reach back and tug at a few old memories of sitting
on the porch listening to stories of  "hard times."
But always with the belief that better times would come our way.
But two things come to mind when I remember..
first, the rural South has a profound heritage,
which must not be tucked away and forgotten,
and second, "if you want anything
fit to eat, you better have a cast iron skillet."

 
We were a family of picture takers I guess, because my mother had
a vast source.  As I was going thru all these pictures when Mother passed away in 1991, I had to smile at a memory that came rushing back.
"You have to face the sun, or you'll get the shadow."
The old proverbial shadow that was our nemesis back then, feeling
that it completely ruined the picture, now brought about a smile at a
time when smiles were rare.
While we're here on the porch let's look at some of these oldies.
It's been fun trying to figure out just who the "shadow" was.  But...
