BERLIN MILITARY TRAIN - 1969

Photo of British Military Train  (The Berliner) waiting in Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof (known as "Brunswick" to the British Army).  The locomotive is one of the mass-produced Reichsbahn engines designed for multi-purpose operation with freight or heavy passenger trains.  Steam power still served on many of the trains east-west through Braunschweig as the net of electrification had not yet reached that region.  Rail traffic in the area was depressed by its proximity to the intra-German border.

Russian-English Interpreter and Train Conducting Warrant Officer. On 12 February 1970 I headed out of cold Berlin to cold Frankfurt on the British train.  My goal was to ride the lines in daylight that the U.S. Duty Train to Frankfurt covered overnight.  In Braunschweig I had time to wait for my connection, and snapped the following photographs of the British train and its crew on their layover.
