Hot Topic - OSFOL Bylaws Revision
What is the legal status of our organization?  Come to the October 9th OSFOL all-member meeting to find out.  Meeting time is 2:00 PM and the coffee will be on.   Lively discussion is sure to ensue as proposals for change to the OSFOL bylaws will be presented and debated at this meeting.  Motions and voting on any proposed changes will be entertained at the November meeting.

Are you aware of the dissolution and funds-distribution proposals facing the OSFOL?  If so, make your opinion known!  As a valued member of the OSFOL, you are invited to put your ideas in writing, whether or not you plan to attend either of the noted meetings.  E-mail your comments to os.library.friends@gmail.com, or stop by the library and leave your written comments with a member of the staff (please do not offer your verbal comments to library staff members).  The OSFOL Communications Committee will collect all comments for presentation at the meeting discussion.  Comments submitted after the October 9th meeting will be available for review at the library prior to the November meeting.

OSFOL currently operates under Title 24 Revised Code of Washington (RCW), Chapter24.03, Washington nonprofit corporation act, with internal operations according to the Ocean Shores Friends Of the Library Bylaws.  Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 2:00 PM.  They usually follow a casual format, but if discussion becomes heated, Roberts Rules of Order will be invoked, per OSFOL Bylaws Article 9.

Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales - Judy Stull

The Ocean Shores Library 2006 Summer Reading Program was a great success.  At our library programs we:
ˇ Learned about Search and Rescue Dogs,
ˇ Listened to crazy sound effects from The Noise Guy, Charlie Williams,
ˇ Sang and danced with Buck and Elizabeth,
ˇ Experienced some fun Wacky Wednesdays, and
ˇ At the Wolf Café, learned how wolves hunt, eat and live.
Thanks to OSFOL for their $200 donation, which helped make our summer activities possible!  Over the summer, 228 kids participated in the library activities, with 29 kids receiving awards for reading over 750 books.

At our annual pet show (our 32nd!), Patrick Jones was awarded the Summer Reading Club grand prize for reading the most books: 100.  For his great effort he received a colorful book bag and a t-shirt.  Patrick and his family visit us every summer from Bremerton, and are enthusiastic library users.

All in all, we had a great time!  Library staff and volunteers are exhausted right now, but are looking forward to an even bigger and better summer program next year.

Ocean Shores Library Teen Summer Program - Michelle Olson
The finale of the Ocean Shores Library Teen Summer Reading Program, "Creature Feature," took place on Friday, August 25th.  Prizes were given out to 14 teens who read 3 books or more over the summer.  A game of Water Balloon Dodge Ball was played and everyone had a great time.

We would like to thank the following local businesses that donated prizes for the TSRP:
Shores Bowl, McDonald's, Mike's Seafood, Ocean Shores Cinemas, Ocean Shores IGA, Too Cool Sportswear,
Beach Treasures & Coffee Lounge, Subway of Ocean Shores, Lucky Dragon Chinese Restaurant, Pacific Paradise Family Fun Center, Monica's Simply Fabulous Accessories
Special thanks also goes out to Jacque Ingersall, who donated $100 to the Teen Advisory Board, and to the OSFOL, who funded a large portion of the 2006 Teen Summer Reading Club with a generous donation of $200.  The Teen Advisory Board also deserves recognition for helping to plan the summer reading program.

40 teens, grades 6-12 signed up and read a total of 80 books.  The three programs included a "Kick-off" Party in June, the craft program, the "Make a Monster" event in July and the aforementioned finale.  The programs were attended by a total of 40 youth.  This was a great Teen Summer Reading Program, and we expect bigger and better things next summer.  To keep up on teen events at the library, Teen Advisory Board news, and what's new in young adult materials, check out www.ostab.blogspot.com.

Crafts and Treasures Sale - Carole Bodey
Have you any jewelry you haven't worn for several years?  If so, please consider bringing these gems with you to the all-member OSFOL meeting on October 9th.  We will be selling jewelry donations at the Senior Center Crafts and Treasures Sale, held at the beginning of December, to raise money for the library expansion.

May and August Newsletters
Attached to this issue are the May and August newsletters, which were available only at the library.  The August newsletter includes the Council Staff Report, to which Michelle has given us the following updates:

16,740 visited the library from June through August, which includes guest book entries from 34 Washington cities, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.  We even had visitors from Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Japan and Norway!

New Communications Committee Formed
As you might have noticed, OSFOL now has a Communications Committee, complete with an e-mail address: os.library.friends@gmail.com and a web site (under construction).  When completed, you will be able to find a Who's Who of Friends and city library authorities; links to special events, governing laws and sponsor's web sites; previous newsletters and treasury reports; photos of staff and events; and other great stuff that we might come up with.  This newsletter will now be published quarterly and will still be mailed to all members.

Unless otherwise noted, the editor of this newsletter writes all text from personal notes and/or submissions received from other OSFOL members.  The editor is therefore solely responsible for the content and should be the only one blamed for any errors.    :-)
