If you even had to think of visiting a store, then you were NOT ready!

Our advice to you is:

Intro
This web page is about being prepared, for any emergency that may arise, being cold or hungry is no fun.
You can buy beans, rice, dry milk, wheat, salt and other staples inexpensively. At $12 for 50# bag of rice you can't go wrong, ten servings in a pound - that's 500 servings. The Asians and Latin Americans / Islanders know that beans and rice make a meal. The box of dried non-fat milk is <$8 for a 4# box. At Sams a 25# bag of pinto beans is $15 and there's 12 servings per pound, that's 300 servings. Sams also sells a 50# bag of pop corn, you can grind this up for corn breads, grits and other yummy foods. Sam and Costco sell 50# bags of sugar, get 60# per person, and buy salt 5# per person at a grocery store. So, for under $140 a person you can feed your family, not "Golden Arches", but food that you can eat. Don't forget your dogs and cats (pets) they'll need food.

How much do you spend on insurance? Add it up: the car, the house / apartment, life, health / dental. This is insurance you can use at anytime without filing a claim form.  This is FOOD INSURANCE!
 

Philosophy
The philosophy for this web page is simple.  Prepare for economic, world or weather conditions so that you and your family have a ready supply of what you will need to survive.

Water is the first priority
You must resolve your water issues first and foremost.  Although most people know you would die in 3 days without water, most folks don't realize that a source of clean, healthy, drinkable water may be difficult to find in case of disaster.  Why not prepare by acquiring a
high quality water filter? Opshop's Water Filters  .  A hand pump for your sprinkler system well or regular house system well is a great addition.

Sanitation can be a problem.
Waterless hand cleaner helps with hygiene after toileting.  Some sort of temporary toilet situation would be useful.

A little bit about food
Some folks say flour will not store long term: Flour loses it a major portion of it's nutritional value with in 48 hours of milling and then stabilizes for 18-24 months, if frozen prior to storage and kept dry. All of the other products are shelf life "stable". Many vendors say you need 315# of wheat, this is a lot of raw wheat and it is not easy to find in the city, and you don't need as much if you buy 100# of corn & rice. If things are as bad as they are denied to be, then we'll be using this stuff before they expire sitting on our shelf. You're wondering why I suggested that meats are optional, well they are when you're on a tight budget, beans & rice and milk & peanut butter are examples of complete protein meals. I'd suggest you buy some canned meats, but not as the main basis for you normal meals consider them bi-weekly treats.

Candles and lanterns.
Since the age of the light bulb has taken place, there has been a marked increase of fire accidents during times of power outages. I strongly suggest that candles and oil lanterns not be used by children and folks who are not very coordinated. The emergency response program in my county recommends against anything with a flame.  Consider the safety issues carefully.  Candles are cheap at the dollar stores.

Safety.

0. Get your shots, all of them.  Get your pets vaccinated too.
1. Now and Always remember: That a fire truck takes >8 minutes to get there, your house will be burnt down before they arrive.
2. It stinks being "broken" (injured).
3. NEVER EVER COOK INDOORS USING A CAMPING STOVE !!!! And especially charcoal grills. You will DIE from the fumes: Carbon Monoxide + Carbon Dioxide.
4. It's not hard to prep your Beans & Grains, just follow these suggestions:

You MUST freeze your beans, grains & flour for 3 days to kill the bugs + eggs (unless you're using DE then mix very well), it would be terrible to have bugs eat your grain for you! Then you must move them to a sealed container to warm up (place in a tied plastic bag), without getting the product wet from condensation - some grain molds can be toxic. A NEW plastic trash container will do just fine, PLEASE READ the container's LABEL to be sure that it is not made from post consumer grade plastics -- they generally brag about it. Or the Sterlite short bins will do swell. See our main page for long-term storage products.
Some decanting hints: + Avoid doing this on a rainy day, if outside. + Best to pour and seal quickly, but don't rush and spill the load on the floor, it's a big mess that gets into the oddest places. + Two people are better than one. + Setup a tarp to work on -- easy mess cleanup. + Seal the buckets tightly BUT gently.

An important detail for families with young children: Cloth Diapers, when you run out those nice nifty paper diapers what are you going to do?  Don't you hate that feeling that you never even tried a cloth diaper?  Don't you wonder what would happen if you ran out and had to make due with towels?  Yuck.  Get to Baby's-R-Us or Target and buy 36 pairs of Gerber "Tri-fold / Prefold" diapers. (details below) Your child's bottom will never look better.  This is more work in short run, but you'll learn you child's "voiding" pattern and will learn when a change is needed, as opposed to the "change when obvious" method that disposables lull you into. Also get two diaper pails and 4 pairs of diaper pins (stick the "working pair" of pins in a bar of soap -- this makes them easier to insert).  Don't be shy about doing this, we've saved a serious amount of money doing this, and our child's bottom looks great (when we take our child to the doctor he always comments about how good the bottom looks) and the landfill has less diapers.  We wash every 4 days, the pails won't hold any more, & you don't want to ripen the product any longer than necessary :^).

Many daycare allow cloth diapers, you must take home the diapers every day, and deal with the solids promptly.  Is the $558 a year an incentive? You bet!

Bike supplies:
Tubes, tires, PATCHES, cables (inner wires), oil (wd40) for chains and cables.
Gloves, Helmets, generators / lights, saddle bags / baskets, kidde carriers (also for stuff).
Knee pads, and gloves for the kids!

Garden supplies:
Epsom Salt (great for tomatoes), Fertilizer (costco sells miracle gro now for $10/ box!)

It's a must buy, what took me 30 minutes to do with a shovel, took me 10 minutes to do TWICE as much.
BTW we just planted our garden, and we used some beans right from the grocery store.  Black, Pink, Garbonzo, and Soy.  These came right out of the bag for cooking, had over 80% sprout!  They produced very well, amazing well.  [2000April] Also we planted sweet potatoes grown from a grocery tatter that had some root left on it, stuck it in a wide mouth jar and supported it with tooth picks.  It and sprouted some nice stems within 2 weeks and we snipped the stems and stuck them in wet soil and watered them daily for about a week. After 5 months of near total neglect, every else during the summer had died, we had solarized our beds to kill the nematodes, and planted summer hardy stock in some pots - the only thing that had survived was the sweet potatoes, with near total neglect. We yielded ~3# from 5 vines in 3 pots!  We're totally amazed.

Diapers:
Cloth!, Flannel for wipes, diaper pins, plastic pants, diaper pail(s), laundry soap [lots], baking soda [lots].

Laundry:
laundry soap [lots], clothes lines INSIDE and OUTSIDE as mentioned before 2-3 5 gallon buckets with lids, mop wringer [now a clothes wringer, brilliant!]

Medicine:
Alcohol (rubbing), Hydrogen peroxide, Band-Aids, Butterfly Band-Aids (instant stitches).
Ipecac syrup. Activated Charcoal !!
VITAMINS: ADULT and CHILDREN / INFANTS
INFANT meds!

Dish soap and sponges, steel wool.
Lye for making soap, get a book -- never use metal tools!

Foot wear:
Socks, boots, sneakers, sandals, river shoes.

Spark plugs, fan belts, ignition wires, spare fuses, radiator hoses, fuel stabilizers
New tires, oil, filters (fuel, oil, AIR). For a LIFETIME reusable air filter get a filter made by K&N Engineering call 1.888.murrays,  if you can't find it locally.  Murray's will require a copy of your ID and your credit card by fax, they've been burned by to many credit card scamers -- but the price is worth the hassle.  fax 305.769.1228.

Canning supplies:
Jars, lids, rings, funnel, pressure canner, tongs, lid boiling rack (handy but optional)

For jars free jars, put a sign up at work asking for Classico and / or Five Brothers pasta jars they're mason jars -- in an odd size 24 oz. But it's free and cook them as quart size jars.
Odd Lots / Big Lots HAD jars and lids for cheap, long gone. Albertsons, sells some, at an OK price.

Tools:

From an Experienced reader: For pressurized camp stoves such as the Coleman Dual Fuel, I've found that before pumping air into the stove, you should open the gas tank for a moment to let out any existing air pressure. Failing to do so could result in a large pressure build up when you add 30 more pumps to an already partially pressurized tank. This is especially important when traveling and changing to a higher altitude. At one high altitude picnic table I had a 5' flame going and the stove wouldn't shut off even when all valves were closed and fuel was leaking around the O-rings. I took care of the problem by cranking up the output to full and waiting for it to burn off fuel for a few minutes. It made an impressive sight, and only reinforces your warning not to cook with these indoors.
