Vic
Caesar
Jessica Williams Those Leftover Dreams Vittorio Cesario has been
everywhere, done
everything, and still lives to
sing, as only
he can, about it. He was a musical child prodigy in Chicago when
Chicago was Chicago. He can tell you a wonderful story of his first
encounter there with Bird, (the revolutionary musical giant, Charlie
Parker). While in the U.S. Navy his gig seems to have been playing
drums in Japan with the legendary pianist, Hampton Hawes. In Vegas,
he was the first act in the history of Caesar's Palace to be held over.
I remember seeing a picture in Downbeat magazine of "Vic Caesar"
playing vibes and singing on the Playboy Club circuit. For a period of
time he even owned his own club in Phoenix when Phoenix was Phoenix,
"Caesar's Forum," where he booked international acts like Ellington and
Basie. He's an actor in scores of films and tv shows. He composes music
for all kinds of things. Check out the writer's credit for the campaign
song, "Nixon's The One!"
See
what I mean? Vittorio just has to do everything! He is a father and
knows the most valuable thing in life is exactly the thing best
expressed in song - love. Love, it turns out, is the principle thing
wisdom reveals.
Jessica
Williams, as the world is fast finding out, is a
revolutionary
musical giant in her own right. As I write this, she is overseas in the
midst of a sold out solo piano concert tour. She's just scary! I mean,
she's great! Astounding, even. She doesn't play piano. She plays Music.
Sound and Feeling. Percussion and Strings. She performs with the
innocence and abandon of a child, and the maturity and precision of an
accomplished, dedicated artist. What's astounding is the depth of the
level of her ability to make magic happen. Her knowledge and sense of
time
are perfect. Her chords and melodies are advanced and fun. Jessica
Williams is the definition of spontaneous perfection.
I heard her first! I handed her Maybeck concert CD to Vic and said,
"Wait'll you hear this!" Of course, he fell in love at first sound and
immediately started playing and raving about her on his nightly jazz
radio show. Eventually, (Isn't destiny wonderful?), Jessica heard
Vittorio sing and, naturally, she fell, too. So what you have here is
one of those inevitable, miraculous, encounters of musical love. The
match is powerful. The fit is strong. The result is worth listening to
forever.
