I've been seriously compiling historical & biographical information for our family trees for more than 20 years now...I have attempted to gather documents and records to build evidence for the information here, & have used copy-paste to minimize the chances for typos, but a mistake is always possible.  I have not included my source material here as it is extensive.  Resources used as evidence include:  American Revolution Pension Files, Civil War Pension Files, Homestead Records, Deeds, Probate Records, Gravestones, Vital Records from Town Books and "Vital Records to 1850..." for Massachusetts towns, etc...  Please ask if you have specific source questions.  Remember: If I use a qualifier, such as prob (probably) or abt (about) or pos (possibly), it means I have more or less evidence, but not conclusive.
Please let me know if you find a mistake, or have evidence that refutes my information, & I will try to exchange source information with you, so we can be as accurate as possible.  I am new to the web, so please bare with me while I learn the best way to create my family genealogy & history.   This is a work in progress....
** Note: What is an Ahnetafel chart?
The entry person is Ann-she is #1 (Ha Ha). For an Ahnetafel chart the person's father is double their number (X 2), & their mother is the father's number + 1.  So:  Ann is #1, her father is 2x1 or #2, & her mother is #2 +1 or #3...Her father's father would be 2 X 2 or #4, & his mother is #5, and so on....  This allows each person to have a unique number for identification.

The song is called "The Spinning Wheel" - I chose this piece for Hollis, NH because my ancestor Thomas Dinsmore was a weaver, & my mother was born & raised in Ireland - so I am partial to Celtic music.

    18. Joshua Norman.  Born: 10 Aug 1835 in New York (possibly Essex Co.) to Mary Ann Harker and Thomas Norman.  He was a veteran of the Civil War (Private, 118th Infantry Co. C of NY)  He married about 1868 to Almeda M. Densmore in New York state.   Joshua & Almeda moved to Minnesota in 1870, settling in Rock Dell Twp., Olmsted Co., MN until 1872  when they relocated to Rosewood Twp., Chippewa Co., MN.  They were among the first settlers in the  Rosewood Twp. where Joshua’s farming methods were praised by the editor of the “Montevideo Leader”.   The original Rosewood Methodist Church was built in Rosewood Twp. on a corner acre of their land purchased for $1.  Joshua was described as “an upright and industrious citizen” and “a man of strong character and positive views” and “as true as steel to his convictions of right and duty”.  He had a large circle of acquaintances, especially among the early settlers.  He was also, evidently, a caring, generous, and charitable man.  A report in the “Montevideo Leader” (12 Dec 1890) says that Joshua Norman, George Knight, and Wm. Bradley purchased “one of Pearson’s best fur robes and a lap robe and presented it to Rev. J. J. Edwards”, because “They don’t propose to let a man suffer that braves the storm to preach for them”.  Another article in the “Leader” (27 Nov 1908) portrays him as a man with a sense of humor and able to laugh at himself.  During a trip to New York state, Joshua wrote a letter to the “Leader” informing them that he was “well and hearty...having a good time up among the mountains and in the wild woods of old York State, but doesn’t forget his Minnesota friends”.  The letter further said that while hunting deer, tracking, them in about 2 inches of snow, he was trying to climb over a steep and slippery place and suddenly got lost—, “that is he lost his foothold and his balance and “fetched up” about ten rods below.” “He then found that he had also lost the seat of his pants and that wound up the hunting trip.”  His intentions were good, however, so his friends in Minnesota excused him for not sending them some venison.  Joshua died: 14 Mar 1915 at the home of his son, John Norman, in Maynard, MN.  He is buried at Sunset Cem. in Montevideo, MN with his wife Almeda.

    19. Almeda M. Densmore.  Born: 16 Apr 1839 in Franklin Falls, NY to Jane Sara Duntley & William Densmore.  Almeda married Joshua Norman in Franklin Falls, NY (per his pension file), and  gave birth to their first child there.  She relocated to Rock Dell, MN with Joshua and their son, James Edward. Their daughter, Mary Ann "Minnie" was born during their short stay in Rock Dell, MN.  They resettled, in 1872, in Rosewood Twp., Chippewa Co., MN, where the rest of their children were born.  She raised her family on the home farm in Rosewood Twp., and was “greatly loved” by her children and husband.  All of their children appear to have settled close to home as adults.  The farm life must have been very difficult for Almeda, since she was reported to be a “great sufferer from asthma” - which evidently contributed to her early death at the age of 64 years.  She died: 5 Aug 1903 at her home, and is buried in Sunset Cem., Montevideo, MN.
Almeda M. Densmore & Joshua Norman had 8 children:

    1) James Edward Norman, born: abt 1869 in NY, married Myrtle Mills.

    36. Thomas Norman.  Born: 1792 in England of "well-to-do parents" (*per Manuscripts), & died 27 Jun 1871 in ESSEX Co., NY.  He married Ann Harker in England probably near their home in Potto, Yorkshire, England, about 1822.  He is buried in the Congregational Church Cemetery in Lewis, NY with his wife, Ann Harker.

    37. Mary Ann Harker "Ann"  Born: 1802 prob. near Potto, YORKSHIRE, England, & died 18 Oct 1867, in Lewis, NY.  Mary Ann was the daughter of one of Thomas' parents' servants.  They married, however, the social differences between their families was said to have caused them such difficulty that they decided to come to America about 1829 - landing first at La Prairie, Canada, then later relocating to Peru, then Lewis, NY.

Children of Ann Harker & Thomas Norman
(as evidenced by NY Census 1850 & 1860, GS Cleora & Marthia's genealogy notes):
     1) John Norman, son of Ann Harker & Thomas Norman, was born in 1824, in Yorkshire County, England, and died in Oct 1908.  He was about 5 years old when he came to America with his parents.  At 26, he left Lewis, NY & bought 160 acres of Carlos Woods, near Bloomingdale, ESSEX, NY, which became his family homestead.  He cleared the land of trees & brush, & raised potatoes which he sold to a starch factory.  Eventually, all the Norman boys except Rueben farmed there.  The land, at the summit of a hilly road, consisted of  600 acres of flat, fertile land known as “Norman Ridge”.  In 1997, the land had recently been sold & was no longer in Norman family hands.  In 1855, John married Hannah Allen Fletcher.  Hannah was born in 1834, and died  in Jun 1906.  They had 5 children:   Matthias Brand, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Eliza, Martha, & Elihu.

    2)  Thomas Norman II, born in 1826 in Yorkshire County, England.  He came to America, with his family, as a small child.  After a short stay with Mr. York in La Prairie, Canada, and a year at the Keese home near Peru, NY, he moved with his family to Tom Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex County, NY in 1833.  He married Fannie Lamson.  Fannie was born in 1841 in NY, and died in 1873 ae. 32 years.  Thomas & Fannie were living in/near Malone, Franklin
Co., NY during the 1860 NY Census.  They did not have any children at that time.  Thomas was a Farmer with real estate valued at $1000 and personal property valued at $300. They both reported being born in NY, however, this is often misreported in censuses.
Thomas II & Fannie had 4 children:  Joshua, Frank, Sadie, & James.

    3) Jane Norman, born in 1828 in Yorkshire County, England she moved with her family to
their own log home on Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex County, NY in 1833. Jane married William Keaugut probably in Essex Co., NY.  They, evidently, relocated to Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY, for it was in Plattsburg that Jane was the Owner & Manager of a good laundry business located on River Street.  She had 12 women working for her at the business.  Jane & William had 2 daughters:  Mary Jane (? - bef 1953) & Anne (1857-1911) m. Henry Cross (or Kraus), & had 3 ch: John, George & Bertha.

    4) ? Baby (Ann?) Norman was born in 1830 as the family was crossing the Atlantic.  (Pliny
Norman believed it was a boy, but Cleora Signor Lynch Fleury Martin thought the infant was a girl named Ann.)  This baby died at sea.  Per Marthia's notes: "Thomas & Ann with hearts of parental love, wished that they might give this lovely darling a burial in the U. S. A.  However, the whales rocked the ship, & due to the danger of the ship wrecking, the Captain searched the ship.  Sad indeed were the parents when the Captain found the baby.  Every heart on board sent up prayers for them as their darling was given burial at sea. —Marthia McRoden Harrison. (See *below)

    5)  Ann Norman was born in Dec 1931 possibly in La Prairie, Canada (since James was said
to be the first child born in America).  She died of Tuberculosis, in Essex County, NY on Aug 25, 1850 at the age of 18 years, 9 months.  She was buried in the churchyard at Lewis, NY.  The following is on her headstone:
“Young people as you pass by
As you are so was I
As I am now, so you must be
Prepare for death & follow me.”

    6)  James Norman  was born 25 Dec 1832, in the Norman home on the Peter Keese farm in Union, near Peru, NY - the first of their children  born in America.  He married Mary McLeod on 7 Oct 1877.   She was born 15 Aug 1840, & lived at the foot of White Face Mountain, Wilmington, NY.  Her Grandfather was said to have participated in the “Boston Tea Party”. They moved to Wadhams, NY, at the time the D. H. T. Railroad was built, & James worked for a contractor named Charles Mayberry.  Later, they purchased a farm from Chatterton,  2 miles from Wadhams, NY- 7 miles from the homestead at Lewis, NY.  On this farm they spent the rest of their lives. Their only son, Pliny, always worked with James as a partner.  On 23 May 1920, James died of hardening of the arteries, & Mary died 6 Jun 1917.  They are buried at Wadhams, NY.  They had 1 child:  Pliny.

6a. Pliny George Norman was born 9 Sep 1879, and died 30 Jun 1951 at 72 years of age.  He married Essie LauraEtta Norman “Etta” on Wednesday, 13 Nov 1907, at Westport, NY.  Etta  was born 2 Mar 1879 to Almeda Densmore & Joshua Norman (Joshua is a  brother of Pliny’s father, James, therefore, Pliny & Lauretta were 1st cousins.)  Lauretta was a  School Teacher born near Montevideo, MN.  She & her father, Joshua, had gone  east to visit  where she met & married Pliny.  Pliny was his father’s partner.  Lauretta died 16 Dec 1932.  Etta & Pliny had 2 natural children:  Irvin & Gladys, & they adopted  Ruth after Gladys died.
    7)  Joshua Norman was born 10 Aug 1835, in the family’s log cabin on Tom Wells Hill, near
Lewis, Essex County, NY to Ann Harker & Thomas Norman.  Per Marthia, Joshua & 7 more children were born to Ann & Thomas Norman in the log cabin Thomas built, on Wells Hill, in Lewis, ESSEX, NY.Evidently (before 1860), Joshua & his brothers bought farm land near Bloomingdale, NY.  which became known as “Norman Ridge” for its location on a ridge - surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains - in the heart of lumbering country. Near Franklin Falls, NY where he married Almeda Melissa Densmore  on 10 Aug 1862 (per Joshua's Civil War Pension File).

    8)  Ellen Norman was born in 1836 near Lewis, NY, & died 14 Jul 1863.  She married Charlie Pelkey.  They are buried in Lewis, NY.  Ellen & Charlie had 4 children:  Mary married Mr. Stillwell;  ?(possibly Cora) Pelkey became deaf after being involved in some way with a  runaway of horses which badly frightened her;  Henry lived at 1424 South Water St., Joliet, IL, & Ellen Pelkey married a Mr. O’Day.  They lived at 410 Eagle St., Joliet, IL.

    9) Mary Norman was born in 1840.  Mary had a speech impediment, which her parents,
evidently, felt would deter any future marriage.  She lived with her parent until they died, and they left Mary their property, so she would be provided for.  The estate had been valued at $20,000, but after the lawyer’s fees were paid, it dwindled down to $3,000.  (At the time of her death, there was $1,800 left which was divided among her nieces & nephews.)  Mary married James McKee after June 1871.  James, of Ausable Forks, had served in the Civil War.  Mary & James had one child who died in infancy.   James died before 1920.  After he died, Mary lived among relatives until 2 years before her own death - when she boarded at a home in Wadhams, NY.  Pliny & Lauretta Norman had looked after her for she suffered with Diabetes.  Mary died 25 Dec 1922 at the age of 82 years in the hospital at Plattsburg, NY.  “There was a terrific blizzard the day of her funeral and there was a long hard struggle to travel over the roads to the Lewis cemetery.  When they reached there, it was late.  If they had the services, burial would be impossible, so with prayer they had the burial then went into the church for the services.” (*Marthia McRoden Harrison) They had 1 ch who died in infancy.

    10)  Richard Norman was born in 18 Sep 1841 in the log home on Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex County, NY.  He died in Caldwell, Canyon, ID on 26 Mar 1920 of Pneumonia.  Richard married Amanda Noble in Mar 1865.  Amanda was from Vermontville, NY.  She was born 21 Apr 1836 in NY, and died 16 Jan 1915 in Caldwell, Canyon, ID. They lived first on  “Norman Ridge” where the family raised potatoes.  Robert was a jolly, easy going, yet very successful farmer with a dear wife.  Amanda was a busy little lady with a great desire to forge ahead.  The story is told that Richard was taking his midday rest, while his horses were feeding, when a pig fell into an old well. - Amanda, greatly alarmed, called Richard who replied: “Don’t worry Amanda.  That pig fell in an hour ago.  I heard him when he fell.”  He was waiting for the pig to tire himself out trying to free himself...Then, it would be easier to throw a loop around him & pull him out! As Marthia McRoden Harrison heard that story, she thought:  “We are much like that pig.-We wear ourselves out floundering around trying to save ourselves. - When we tire ourselves out, & are willing to give up, then the Lord can save us.  Why must we act like pigs so long, when all the time the Lord is waiting to help us?” Robert & Amanda moved to the Montevideo, MN area where they bought a farm located 3 miles from his brother, Joshua’s.  After he retired, they moved to Parma, Idaho.  Richard & Amanda had 6 children:  Cora, James, Levi, Hattie, Charles, & Belle.  After Amanda died (1915), Richard remarried Ella.  They had no children together.  She was a woman of his own age whose children were grown.

    11)  Robert Norman was born in 1843 in the log home on Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex County, NY.  He enlisted & served in the Civil War until the war’s end.  Robert was one of the brothers who lived on “Norman Ridge” where the family raised potatoes.  He later joined 3 brothers:  Joshua, Henry, & Richard in Minnesota.  This is where he met & married Mrs. Mary George - a widow with 2 children.   Robert & Mary lived on what later became known as the Dodd farm, near Montevideo, MN.  He worked for various farmers in the area. Robert was a great favorite with all his grand nieces & nephews.  He brought them gifts of beautiful china dolls, stick candy with rings, balls, teddy bears, etc. when he visited in the spring & fall.  (Marthia McRoden Harrison had many beautiful china dolls, rings, & a statue of Admiral George Dewey which she received from him.)  He also entertained them with war stories.  Robert lived his last years at Old Soldiers’ Home in Minnehaha.  He died in St. Paul, MN of Pneumonia Mar 26, 1917.  He was buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

    12)  Henry Norman was born 10 Jan 1845 in the log home on Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex County, NY.   He died 26 Mar 1920 of a heart attack as he entered a bank, probably in Montevideo, MN. Henry married Mary (Mariah) L. Densmore.  Mary was born 11 May 1847, to Jane & William Densmore, in Franklin Falls (near Malone), Franklin Co., NY, and died 1 May 1924 in Chippewa Co., MN.  Mary was the sister of Almeda Densmore who married Henry’s brother, Joshua. They lived on “Norman Ridge”, near Bloomingdale, NY, where their 4 children were born.  In June 1882, they visited Joshua, and bought a farm 2 miles from him near Montevideo, MN.  There, Henry worked for Frank Bently. In 1913, Henry retired, & they spent their last years at Maynard, MN.  They are buried in Montevideo, MN at Sunset cemetery.  Henry & Mary had 4 children: Thomas, Willie, Lottie, & Janie.
Children of Mary Densmore & Henry Norman:

    12a. Thomas died in infancy.

12b. William Henry Norman  "Willie" was born 8 May 1873 in Vermontville, NY & died 13 May 1958, and was buried in Sunset cemetery in Montevideo, MN.   He married Florence E. Warner.  Florence was born on    27 Feb 1887.  (She was the daughter of Cornelia Densmore’s 2nd husband Mr. Warner.  They were listed in a Farmer’s Directory (abt 1915) having 77.75 acres in Section #22,  Havelock Twp., Chippewa Co., near Montevideo, MN.  Florence died 2 Jan 1927 in MN, & is buried with William.  Most of her children lived with Zana (Bentley) Peterson, the wife of John W. Peterson - a Montevideo attorney.  “Chippewa County History” (p321) reports that the children were Zana’s cousins, so it is presumed that they went to live with Zana after Florence died in 1927.  Willie may have returned to the   Plattsburg, NY area after her death.  Marthia wrote that he lived south of Plattsburg, NY near Salmon Creek,   where he had 6 acres, a garden & chickens.  He cared for people’s lawns along the lake shore.  She said  he was “a dearly loved, neat, tidy old man, loved by all his neighbors”.
12c.  Eloda "Lottie" Normanwas born 10 Aug 1875, at “Norman Ridge” near Bloomingdale, NY, and died 7 Jun 1948.    When she was about 7 years old, Lottie moved with her parents to Chippewa County, MN.  Lottie married   William Alley.  Will & Lottie were listed in an “Atlas & Farmer’s Directory of Chippewa County, MN”    (about 1915).  It reports they had 160 acres in section 29 of Havelock Twp.  At that time William had been   living in the county for 21 years, and Henry, Helen, Alice, & Orville had been born.  Lottie & Will had 6 children:  Henry, Helen, Lloyd, Alice, Orville, & Ruby.
12d. Janie Norman was born in 1881 at “Norman Ridge”, near Bloomingdale, NY.  When 1 year old, she moved   with her family to Chippewa County, MN, near Montevideo.  She married 1st John Bird on 17 Jun 1897.    John was a brakeman with the Railroad.  John died in a railroad accident.  Janie & John had 2 children:   Ethel & Norman.  Janie  married 2nd to Joseph Parkins on 13 Dec 1909.  Janie & Joseph had 1 child:  Fannie Bridge Parkins (6 Jun 1911-16 Jul 1980) m. Julian Olson-Fannie & Julian are buried in Sunset Memorial Cem. in Montevideo, MN

     13)  Reuben Norman was born 8 Jun 1846 to Ann Harker & Thomas Norman, in the log home on Wells Hill, near Lewis, Essex Co., NY, and died 2 Oct 1930. When he was a young boy, he filled his Dad’s gun full of powder...It kicked him over into a brushpile.  The experience must have left quite an impression for it to be the one story handed down.  Reuben married Achsa Elvira Tyler on 17 Nov 1871 in Franklin Co., NY.  Achsa was born 27 July 1852 in Malone, NY.  Her parents are not yet known, however, she had 2 brothers yet living in 1911:  W. W. Tyler of Randolph and Wade Tyler of New York.  The latter had been staying with Achsa when she died on 29 Mar 1911 of a brain hemorrhage.  Achsa also had a surviving sister,  Mrs. James Morse of Appleton, Wisconsin, and several 1/2 brothers & sisters.   Reuben & Achsa lived in New York & Bridport, VT prior to their move, about 1893, to Randolph, VT.  Achsa was said to be a “hard working woman & besides doing her own work and caring for her sick ones he was always ready to respond to the call of her friends & neighbors and help them in any way in which she could”.  They had 8 children (all still living in 1911):  Ella, Edna, Wilbur, Ann, Mina, John, Carlotta, & Lena.

Manuscript sources which were invaluable for information & leads on the Norman family were written by Marthia & Cleora, neither was published.  I hold Marthia's collection of original notes, photos & genealogy folders, which she never put into a final form, & a photocopy of Cleora's family tree:
    1) Marthia LaPerl (McRoden) Harrison's genealogy of the Norman family.
    2) Cleora Signor Lynch Fleury Martin.

    Ann's Family Home Page
**Ann's Note: The Densmores were an old New England family.  William Densmore’s mother was Susannah Green - daughter of Lucy Elliot & Uzziah Green.  Her mother Lucy had died just weeks after her birth.  Uzziah was born in Leicester, MA to Dorcas Sanger & Nahum Green.  His family  moved to Royalston, MA, where his father, Nahum, represented that town in the 2nd Provincial Congress which was meeting at Concord during April 1775 when the 1st shots of the American Revolution rang out.  Nahum was said to have enlisted at Cambridge after the meeting’s adjornment, however he contracted smallpox & returned home where he died in July 1775.  He was said to have been the first martyr of the Revolution for the town of Royalston.  Uzziah enlisted himself, & also fought in the American Revolution.  He removed to Vermont after Lucy’s death - settling in Pittsfield.  Uzziah’s family includes such old Massachusetts names as Green, Sangar, Sprague, Cutter, Peake, & Leavens - while Lucy’s included the well-known names of Soden & Elliot who all came to America, primarily from England, in the 1600’s.
William’s father was Amos Dinsmore (born 1787 in Temple, NH) the son ofElizabeth Todd & Zebediah Dinsmore. Zebadiah (b. 1755 prob. Hollis, NH) was a minute man present 19 Apr 1775 at Lexington for the beginning of the American Revolution.  Zebediah’s parents were Lydia (possibly nee Johnson) & Abraham Densmore (born 1729-30 in Bedford, MA), and his grandparents were Hannah & Thomas Densmore.  Thomas & Hannah resided in Bedford, MIDDLESEX, MA in 1725, then relocated to Hollis (abt 1733). Their son, Abraham Dinsmore, relocated (abt 1764) to Temple, NH.  Zebediah’s wife was Elizabeth Todd, the daughter of Joshua Todd.  Her father was said to be a descendent of Thomas Nelson (on his mother, Jemima’s side) and John Todd (on his father’s side).  Both were among the early settlers of Rowley, MA during the Puritan years—coming to America during the 1630s.  I am currently searching for more evidence of Joshua Todd’s ancestory.  There were two other Todd surname families who could be Joshua's family - one in Peterborough & one in Londonderry, NH in addition to the one in Rowley, MA - One source reported Joshua as born in what was called at the time Rowley-Canada (near Peterborough & Temple, NH area).  I do not know if the two Todd families are related, or which Joshua Todd is related to at this time.  Evidence is quite good for either/both.

    * Note: This is a brief chart of William Densmore's ancestors.
It is an Ahnetafel chart.
