ABOITE TOWNSHIP
   Aboite Township communities include:  Ellisville, Forest Ridge, Liberty Hills, Manor Woods, Rolling Hills, Timbercrest and Westlawn.  The community of Aboite is located on the Aboite and Lafayette townships line, and Dunfee is located on the Aboite Township (Allen County) and Jefferson Township (Huntington County) line.
     Aboite Township is located in western Allen County.  The Little Wabash River flows through the southern edge of the township.

ADAMS TOWNSHIP
   Adams Township communities include:  the city of New Haven, and the communities of Meadowbrook, River Haven and Sunnymede Woods.  The City of Fort Wayne includes large portions of the following 4 townships:  Adams, St. Joseph, Washington and Wayne.
     Located in east central Allen County, Adams township is traversed by the Maumee River, west to east, on its way to Ohio.

CEDAR CREEK TOWNSHIP
   Cedar Creek Township communities include:  Cedar Shores, Cedarville, Grabill, Hursh and Leo.  It is located in northern Allen County, with Jackson township, in Dekalb County, at its northern boundary.
     Cedar Creek and the St. Joseph River flow through this township, which also includes 2 reservoirs:  Cedarville and Hurshtown.

EEL RIVER TOWNSHIP

   Eel River township is a rural township.  It is located in the northwestern corner of Allen County, with Swan Township, in Noble County, at its northern boundary, and Smith Township, in Whitley County, to the west.


 
JACKSON TOWNSHIP
   Jackson Township communities include:  Edgerton and Townley.  The community of Four Presidents Corners is situated on the intersection of the 4 townships of Jackson, Monroe, Madison and Jefferson, in Allen County, Indiana.
Jackson  Township is located in eastern Allen County, with Paulding County, in the state of Ohio, at its eastern boundary.


 
JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP
   Jefferson Township communities include:  Maples, Tillman and Zulu.  The community of Four Presidents Corners is situated on the intersection of the 4 townships of Jackson, Monroe, Madison and Jefferson, in Allen County.


 
LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP
   Lafayette Township communities include:  Aboite which is situated at the Lafayette and Aboite townships line.  Lafayette Township is located in the southwestern corner of Allen County, with Huntington County at its western boundary, and Wells County at its southern boundary.


 
LAKE TOWNSHIP
   Lake Township communities include:  Arcola, Dunn Mill and Levert.  It is located in western Allen County, with Union Township, in Huntington County, at its western boundary.


 MADISON TOWNSHIP
   Madison Township communities include:  Boston Corner and Hoagland.  The community of Four Presidents Corners is situated on the intersection of the 4 townships of Jackson, Monroe, Madison and Jefferson, in Allen County.  Madison Township is located in southern Allen County, with Root Township, in Adams County, Indiana at its southern boundary, and the town of Williams is located on the Allen - Adams counties line.


 
MARION TOWNSHIP
   Marion Township communities include:  Hessen Cassel,  Middletown and Poe.  It is located in southern Allen County, with Jefferson Township, in Wells County, and Preble Township, in Adams County, both at its southern boundary.  Marion Township, Allen County.


 
MAUMEE TOWNSHIP
   Maumee Township communities include:  Bluecast and Woodburn.  The Maumee River meanders, west to east, across Maumee township, which is located in eastern Allen County, with Paulding County, in the state of Ohio, at its eastern boundary.


MILAN TOWNSHIP
   Milan Township communities include:  Five Points, Gar Creek and Milan Center.  Milan Township is located in east central Allen County, with the Maumee River meandering across the township.


MONROE TOWNSHIP
   Monroe Township is located in eastern Allen County, with Paulding County, in the state of Ohio, at its eastern boundary.  Monroe Township communities include:  Dixon, East Liberty and Monroeville.  The community of Four Presidents Corners is situated on the intersection of the 4 townships of Jackson, Monroe, Madison and Jefferson, in Allen County, Indiana.

   Communities include: Baerfield (Airport) and the town of Yoder, which was originally named Sheldon.  The community of Nine Mile is situated on the Pleasant - Lafayette townships line.  Pleasant Township is located in southern Allen County, with Jefferson Township, in Wells County, Indiana at its southern boundary.


ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP
   St. Joseph Township is located in central Allen County, with the St. Joseph River flowing through its borders.  The City of Fort Wayne encompasses a large portion of the township, and the community of Thurman is situated on the St. Joseph and Milan townships line.

   Communities include:  Cuba, Georgetown, Halls Corners and Harlan.
Springfield Township is located in northern Allen County, with Spencer Township, in Dekalb County, Indiana to the north.


 
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
   Communities include:  Academie, Wallen, Concordia Gardens, Crestwood, and the northwestern area of the City of Fort Wayne.
Located in central Allen County, the St. Joseph River flows through Washington Township.

WAYNE TOWNSHP
   Communities include:  a large southern portion of the City of Fort Wayne, and the communities of Avalon, Country Club Gardens, Times Corner, Waynedale and Westmoor.
Wayne Township is located in central Allen County, with the Saint Mary's River flowing through its borders, to join the St. Joseph and Maumee Rivers in downtown Fort Wayne.

Timeline of Allen County History

 


April 1, 1824

·         Allen County was born:  On December 17, 1823, Indiana Legislature passed "An Act for the formation of a new county out of the counties of Randolph and Delaware, to be included within the following limits:  Beginning at a point on the line dividing this State, and the State of Ohio, where the township line dividing townships twenty-eight and twenty-nine, north interesects the same; thence north with said State line twenty-four miles; thence west, to the line dividing ten and eleven, east, thence south to the line dividing townships twenty-eight and twenty-nine, north intersects the same; thence north with said State line twenty-four miles; thence west, to the line dividing ten and eleven, east; thence south to the line dividing townships twenty-eight and twenty-nine, north; thence east to the place of beginning."3(History of Allen County, p. 46)


On April 1, 1824, the legislative act which created Allen County took effect.  At that time, Allen County included the present Indiana counties of Allen, Lagrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Huntington, and most of Whitley, Wells and Adams counties.

·         "The name of Allen was suggested (1823) by General John Tipton, who was an admirer of Colonel John Allen, the gallant Kentuckian who, after the relief of Fort Wayne in 1812, lost his life at the battle of the River Raisin, in Michigan, south of Detroit." (Pictorial, p. 264.)

o    Shooting Star (Tecumseh) - A skilled and courageous Shawnee fighter, Tecumseh was, however, known for his opposition to unnecessary, arbitrary killing.  He and his brother, Tenskwatawa (The Shawnee Prophet), established a northern Indiana village called Prophet's Town, which was later destroyed in 1811.  He refused to sign the Treaty of Greenville.   He believed the Northwest Territory belonged to a single Indian Nation, and did not believe it valid for individual tribes to have borders.  Tecumseh died at the Battle of the Thames on Oct. 5, 1813.

·  The original capitol  of the Indiana Territory was Vincennes as established in 1805.  The capitol was relocated to Corydon in 1813 where it remained until January 12 1825, when Indianapolis became the capitol of Indiana.

·         State Bird: Cardinal

·         State Flag:  (adopted in 1917)  has nineteen gold stars in two cirlces surround a gold torch on a blue field. The torch representsliberty and enlightenment and its rays represent their far reaching influence. The 13 stars in the outer circle stand for the 13 original states; the five stars in the inner circle stand for the next five statesadmitted to the Union, and the large star above the torch stands for Indiana, the 19th state.
