BLOOMINGTON HERALD-TIMES (Bloomington, IN) (December 8, 2000) Audibles - Jason Nickey The Vigilantes Of Love Part of the second wave of Athens, Ga., rock that began in the early '90s and included artists such as Widespread Panic, Vic Chesnutt and Jack Logan, the Vigilantes of Love emerged in 1992. Powered by Bill Mollonee, a Dylan-inspired folk-rocker whose keen eye for detail has inspired 11 albums for the Vigilantes, the band has always seemed just shy of becoming a college-radio staple like some of their Athens cohorts. Bill Mollonee and the Vigilantes of Love will perform Saturday at the Cellar Lounge. Because of superficial similarities, the Vigilantes often get wrongly categorized with lesser talents such as Hootie and the Blowfish or Sister Hazel, but, in actuality, the Vigilantes' songs are far more dark and gritty. Their most recent album, Audible Sigh, is a collection of 12 rootsy takes on modern life, impassioned and personal. The legendary Emmylou Harris even makes a guest appearance on one track. Appearing with the Vigilantes of Love will be Chicago-based singer-songwriter Doug Hoekstra, one of the most promising musicians to emerge from the pack in the over-crowded genre. Highly literate and with quirky sense of observation, Hoekstra not only writes great songs, but his creative use of the recording studio makes his albums worthy of intent listening. Saturday's show begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Send your Audibles announcements to The Herald-Times, P.O. Box 909, Bloomington, IN 47402 or fax information to 331-4383.
