Amish Victims Fund

The tragedy of the shootings of the Amish school children have touched us all. If you would like to make a donation to the victims' families you can donate to the Mennonite Disaster Service and list in the memo line, or click in the proper box, that the donation is for the 2006 Amish School Recovery Fund. The funds will be used for medical care, transportation (the hospital where the survivors are being treated is quite a distance from their homes), supportive care, and other needs. To make a donation, you can call 717-859-2210, mail a donation to Mennonite Disaster Service, 1018 Main St., Akron, PA 17501, or online at...
http://mds.mennonite.net/Donate/Online_Giving
There is a link on the same page for any of our Canadian readers who would like to donate by credit card. The Amish have also shown their sympathy and support to the family of the disturbed man who committed the crime, by including his family as potential recipients of the victims' fund.

Dottie's Weight Loss Zone

This site is a great resource for anyone on a diet, or someone just trying to eat right.
http://www.dwlz.com
We don't endorse all advice on the site, but she has a lot of helpful info. One of the most helpful things is a page with nutritional info on food from a LARGE selection of restaurants. If you do the Weight Watchers program of points, she includes those as well. If you do exchanges or grams, she has info for that as well.

Dry Wall Hangers

If you are tired of trying to use a "wood support"(can't use proper word as some filters might block it by mistake) finder when you hang your pictures on the wall, or there isn't a "wood support" in the location where you want to hang a picture, then there's a product out there you might be interested in. Home Depot, and other stores, have dry wall hangers. These hangers have a hook with 1-6 short nails (depending on how heavy your picture is) in slots designed to spread the support through a wider area. That way, the nails are shallow, but should be able to provide the same support as regular, longer nails. To get a better look at them, go to... www.ooks.com
And click on "Picture Hangers."

Recipe: Korean Spinach Dish

We were going to feature this recipe in our last issue, but in light of the recall, decided to wait. Now that they have figured out the source of the problem and spinach is back on the shelves, here's a yummy recipe to bring that healthy green stuff back into your home.

bulletBlanch 1 package/bunch of spinach and squeeze water out.
bulletMix 2 1/2 Tblsp each of soy sauce, rice wine vinegar (white vinegar would also work), sesame oil (other cooking oils can be substituted), and mirin (a seasoned, rice-based wine, similar to sake but w/less alcohol).
bulletAdd liquid mixture and 2-4 Tblsp sesame seeds to spinach, and mix well.
bulletUsually served chilled or at room temperature.
bulletIf you'd like to leave out the mirin, then just increase the soy sauce, vinegar, and oil by 1/2 tblsp each.

POST IT...on your shopping list and in your recipe box.

Back Issue Treasure: November 19th, 2003 Issue (Reviews of Your Teachers, Book Bags, Finding Your Home for Worship, Turkey Tip, & More)

Getting ready for some end of quarter tests? Or maybe getting ready to pick some classes for the 2nd semester? Either way, you'll want to check out the teacher/professor rating sites in this back issue. They have ratings (and you can provide them as well) for middle school through college. All should be taken with a grain of salt, but most of the teachers we have personally experienced, have reviews that are right on the mark. Many colleges have students do reviews at the end of a class, to provide valuable input for the teacher. So teachers should throw out what isn't helpful but read the reviews with an open mind (e.g. If you get positive reviews, but practically every review says you yell too much, then you might want to consider watching that). Please read the entire article in the back issue before sending me flame mail (many of my friends/family are teachers, so I'm certainly not anti-educator). Has your child's book bag already started falling apart?...then you'll want to check out our article on quality book bags. There's also an article that can help you speed up that search for a worship home, and a turkey tip you'll want to save for Thanksgiving. All this and more in this great Back Issue Treasure.

Missing: Updates on Missing

One of our readers asked if we could do updates on the missing people we have featured. It is difficult to do this, because, unless there is a news article, the file is simply removed from most sites once the person is found dead or alive. But we went back a year and checked the 24+ (some issues we featured siblings) people we've featured. Sadly, most are still missing. Two were found dead in a boating accident, 1 was found murdered, 2 were recovered. In one of the recovery cases, we do know that a tip from the Make a Note was helpful in the search. While we are sad about the statistics, it is important that we keep looking, esp. in light of the recovery of some children who have been missing for as long as 10 yrs before being found.

Final Words

JOKE (From Thomas D.)

Ever Wonder...Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

QUOTE

Marie Roberts, widow of the gunman who killed the Amish children, thanked the Amish and others in the community for their "forgiveness, grace, and mercy." She said, "Your love for our family has helped to provide the healing we so desperately need. Gifts you've given have touched our hearts in a way no words can describe...Your compassion has reached beyond our family, beyond our community, and is changing our world, and for this we sincerely thank you. Please know that our hearts have been broken by all that has happened. We are filled with sorrow for all of our Amish neighbors whom we have loved and continue to love. We know there are many hard days ahead for all the families who lost loved ones, and so we will continue to put our hope and trust in the God of all comfort, as we all seek to rebuild our lives."
