COUPONS

Here are some great sites to get coupons for grocery items, restaurants, and other businesses online. http://www.coolsavings.com/, http://www.valupage.com/, http://www.valpack.com/, http://www.hotcoupons.com/, and http://www.directcoupons.com/. These sites may be helpful to you or not, a lot depends on where you shop & what you buy. Also don't forget to look for specific business web sites. Some consumer sites will actually have coupons to print out for their product, some businesses also. We just returned from a vacation in Colorado & I was able to get an internet coupon for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo that gave us $1 off each ticket. Like the lady said in the last issue...if you take care of the cents, the dollars will take care of themselves. POST IT...by your computer and in your favorites/bookmark list.

AVOIDING TRAVELERS' DIARRHEA

Now that vacation season is fast approaching, here is a hint for those of you traveling far from home. Scientists have found a substance in pineapple that may prevent illness caused by E. Coli, the source of most travelers' diarrhea. The substance, bromelain (also available from some health food stores) prevented E. Coli from attaching to the intestinal wall. They think it may block toxins produced by the bacteria. So eat up that pineapple and pineapple juice. And don't forget that it isn't just drinking certain waters that can cause problems. You can also have problems brushing your teeth with the water, using ice cubes made with the water for your bottled drink, or eating fruit washed with the water (unless it is cooked). POST IT...with the vacation brochures and/or your passport.

GENEAOLOGY HELPS

No matter what your religion one of the best sources for those of you investigating the family tree is the Mormon Church genealogy records. You used to have to go there in person, or do it by snail mail, but they have announced that they are putting at least some of their extensive (13 Billion names of people from 110 countries) family history archive online. They are expected to make a formal announcement of the date these files will be available sometime soon. You do NOT need to be a Mormon in order to access the info. Check it out at http://www.lds.org. Ever wonder why the Mormon church is so interested in genealogy? The church "amasses the records for its so-called baptism of the dead". They believe that the dead can be baptized by proxy, so when someone live is baptized, they also are symbolically standing in for the names of the dead put forth in that particular ceremony. Their goal is to baptize everyone who ever lived.  POST IT...by your computer or with your family tree info.

LAWN CARE

For those of you who have heard this all before, just skip to the next entry. But with the season now upon us, here is a rehash of all those tips you've heard before. Water as early in the morning as possible. If you water at night, it makes the lawn prone to fungus growth; if you water during the day it evaporates too quickly and if it is too hot could also damage the grass. Use a tuna can to make sure you aren't overwatering. A small tuna can holds an inch of water. Your lawn needs only 1-2 inches of water a week. Some weather reports actually will tell you how much you need to water your lawn. You should mow the lawn when the grass is about 1/3 taller than the recommended height. Let the clippings go back to the grass to help nourish it. If you let the grass get too long before you cut it, it won't be as thick. What's the right height? For Bermuda 1/2-1" tall; bahia, tall fescue, bluegrass 2-3"; fine fescue 1 1/2-2 1/2 "; rye 1 1/2-2"; and St. Augustine 2-3". Some of this info is from the http://www.stretcher.com/ web site. POST IT...near the door to your sprinklers.

SEEDS FROM SPACE

NASA's shuttle Atlantis took 20 lbs. of tomato seeds up in space, at the same time they took the same amount to their underwater facility, and another batch stayed at the seed company. NASA is distributing these seeds to schools, including home schools, throughout the USA. Each school will receive some of each batch of seeds and are asked to grow them, track the results and let the seed company know the results, which will be posted on their web site. If you would like to participate write a letter with your request (tell them if you are a homeschooling family or have your child's public or private school request them, if you are not homeschooling). Request the seed kits, one per family or classroom. Mail your request to: SEEDS II PROJECT, C/O MR DENNIS CHAMBERLAND MS JJ-GCCAS, HANGAR L, ROOM 226, KENNEDY SPACE CTR, FL 32899 For more information go to their web site at http://www.parkseed.com/nasa.htm. POST IT...by your computer or your stamps. Tomatoes from space....sounds interesting.

NEW BIG BOOK OF HOME LEARNING

For homeschoolers or those interested in homeschooling, the wait is over. Mary Pride's NEW updated version of the "Big Book of Home Learning" is finally available for purchase. For those of you unfamiliar with this publication it is, in many homeschoolers' opinions, the ultimate resource for homeschoolers. Last I heard it could be purchased from bookstores with a discount card for about the same price as you could get it from http://www.christianbook.com/. Or ask your library to order it for their stacks. POST IT...by the phone, on your shopping list, or by the computer.

JOKE (accredited to Dr. James Dobson)

The reason that some women would rather look good than be smart is because they know that most men see a lot better than they can think. :)

QUOTE

"The idea used to be that terrible countries were terrible because good, decent, innocent people were being oppressed by evil, thuggish leaders. Somalia changed that. Here you have a country where just about everybody is caught up in hatred and fighting. You stop an old lady on the street and ask her if she wants peace, and she'll say, yes, of course, I pray for it daily. All the things you'd expect her to say. Then ask her if she would be willing for her clan to share power with another in order to have that peace, and she'll say, 'With those murderers and thieves? I'd die first.' People in these countries-Bosnia is a more recent example-don't want peace. They want victory. They want power. Men, women, old and young. Somalia was the experience that taught us that people in these places bear much of the responsibility for things being the way they are. The hatred and the killing continues because they want it to. Or because they don't want peace enough to stop it."

FEEDBACK -FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK

RE: Mucky Duck Key Lime/Lemon Pie

One reader wrote concerned about using the raw egg whites. While I have never tried it, I don't see why an egg substitute like Egg Beaters couldn't be used.
