MAKE A NOTE EXTRA EDITION!! -- March 16th, 1999
OKAY, OKAY, I get the message. Due to the numerous requests I have had for the DITTY (Do IT Yourself) Resurrection Eggs, which are not available in the back issues yet, I have decided just to send it out to everyone. This is a DITTY list for 12 Eggs of Easter that was distributed at a home school meeting I attended about 5 yrs ago. I have not looked closely at the commercial resurrection eggs, but I would say these are a bit different & perhaps not quite as detailed as the commercial ones. But here it is and another freebie below that. 12 EGGS OF EASTER Purchase 12 plastic eggs and number with a permanent or glitter marker from 1 to 12. Put the following items into the eggs & read the verses for each day, starting with the 11th day before Easter with Egg 12. Count down each day until you get to Egg 1 on Easter. ALL VERSES ARE FROM MATTHEW. Egg 12-Verse 26:14-15-Money/Coins Egg 11-Verse 26:26-28-Bread Egg 10-Verse 26:47-56-Sword(from drink garnish or toothpicks crossed & glued) Egg 9-Verse 26:69-75-Rooster (picture or toy) Egg 8-Verse 27:1-2-Rope (or thick string) Egg 7-Verse 27:29-Thorn (from a rose bush perhaps) Egg 6-Verse 27:31-32-Cross Egg 5-Verse 27:48-Sponge Egg 4-Verse 27:57-59-White Linen (or cloth) Egg 3-Verse 27:60-Stone Egg 2-Verse 28:2-Dirt (for earthquake) Egg 1(Easter)-Verse 28:5-6-EMPTY (because the tomb was empty) POST IT...on your shopping list & on your calendar. * * * * * * * * * * * * EASTER STORY COOKIES To be made the evening before Easter (or other times:)). You need: 1C whole pecans or walnuts, 1tsp. Vinegar, 3 egg whites, pinch salt, 1C sugar, zipper baggie, wooden spoon, tape, and a Bible. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Place nuts in zipper baggie & let the children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested He was beaten by the Roman soldiers, but that no bones were broken, as per Old Testament prophecy. Read John 19:1-3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11. Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it & brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, & the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27. So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1C sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know & belong to Him. Read Psalms 34:8 and John 3:16. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 min until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60. Put cookie sheet in oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF (yes, turn it off). Give each child a piece of tape & seal the oven door (doesn't really have to be "sealed"). Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66. GO TO BED!! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20, 22. On Easter morning, open the oven & give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface & take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open & empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9. HE IS RISEN!! POST IT...on your shopping list & on your calendar. * * * * * * * * * * * * Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.
