MAKE A NOTE!! -- September 15th, 1997CIRCULATION 53
***************************************************************************
*************************************************************************** USED/OUT OF PRINT BOOK SOURCES (READER REQUESTED) Most companies that help you find the above are usually very overpriced. However, I have three sources for Christian books that are very reasonable and someone asked for their phone numbers. They are: Steele's (Kansas City) (816)483-2004, Baker (616)957-3110, and Kregel (616)459-9444. Usually the price of the books is based on the condition and demand, plus a small shipping fee. Steele's is my favorite and has helped on many occasions. Steele's will also put your name on their data base, if they don't have the book, and will call you if it comes in. Once they called me over a year later, but most of the time it comes in fairly soon depending on the book. I have only dealt with the other two companies once, but was not as impressed with their service. Some of the out of print books in the most demand...."Tapestry" by Edith Schaeffer and "Family Celebrations" by Ann Hibbard (my requests alone are probably responsible for the latter. POST IT...in your yellow pages under book, or in your Bible. SAVING ON PHONE BILLS (READER REQUESTED) Recently a news program set out to answer that age-old TV question....which long distance company REALLY has the best deal. What did they find out? There wasn't really much difference in price at all between similar programs of different companies. What they did find was that there was a BIG price difference in program savings WITHIN companies. Once you get on a particular savings plan with a company, they don't usually bother to suggest any changes. What the news program suggested was contacting your long distance company every 6 months to make sure you are on the plan that saves you the most money. Most companies can check your phone bills for the past 3 months and have computer programs that will tell them how much money you would save on each plan depending on your use. For many years we were on program A, then when I called to ask them if we were on the best plan, they recommended changing to a new one that would save us about $5/month on the average with our calling patterns. Then about 6 months ago, they recommended switching to another plan that would again save us another $5/month average. So just call and say, "I want to find out if I am on the calling plan that will save me the most money, can you check my records?" They are always starting new programs to get new subscribers, you may not have heard of them, but they may be the best one for you. POST IT...by your phone and then in your calendar for every 6 months. REMOVING BUMPER STICKERS (Courtesy of USAA article) Start with gentle heat from a hair dryer. Carefully peel up a corner of the sticker and force air under it to loosen the adhesive. Be careful not to let the underlying surface get hot to the touch; too much heat can damage both paint and metal. Once you have removed as much of the sticker as possible, work off the residue using a soft cloth saturated with a gentle solvent, such as mineral spirits (the active ingredient in tar and bug removers). Test an inconspicuous area first for possible discoloration. Avoid harsh solvents like alcohol, lacquer thinner, and products containing xylene & acetone (like finger nail polish remover), which will dissolve auto paint. Finally, rinse the solvent off thoroughly and apply polish. POST IT....in your glove compartment. CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH/DAY This movement began about 4 years ago and is becoming more popular. October is Clergy Appreciation Month and the second Sunday in October is Clergy Appreciation Day. This is a time when we can make those special people who give so much, feel a little more appreciated. Some churches have month long celebrations and surprises for their pastors. Others may just find a special gift or take them out to eat. Why not organize something for your church, or just do something on your own. For a booklet of ideas, contact Focus on the Family 1-800-A-Family and ask for the Clergy Appreciation booklet ($2.50). Or I would be happy to send you a list of ideas culled from the booklets and other sources, just send me an email. For those in the military, don't forget the chaplains! And don't forget the Clergy wives and families too. POST IT...by your phone, in your Bible, or on your calendar. I'll probably do a little reminder next month also. FEEDBACK--FEEDBACK--FEEDBACK--FEEDBACK RE: DRESSING FOR COURT An attorney and my court-reporter sister both wrote that they thought the recommendations were right on the mark. My sister also suggests that if you ever have to testify in court or give a deposition, that you think the questions over carefully and answer as briefly as possible. Apparently some people can go on about even, "What is your name?" for 5 min (e.g. "Well, it used to be this, but I just go by this, but the defendant called me this..."). RE: CHRISTMAS PREPARATION LISTS A buddy of mine refuses to incriminate herself by commenting on her Christmas planning status. Love ya Pam! :-) A reminder, speaking of the Christmas list...you should have had the family photo done, made your list, and be ordering/buying those gifts by now. REQUESTS Let me know what subjects you would like to see in the newsletter. Make-A-Note@worldnet.att.net JOKE This has been a great month for receiving jokes. The hard part is deciding which ones to use in the newsletter. So here's one from the selection... A guy goes into a bar and orders a drink. Bartender gives him a drink and a bowl of nuts. The guy starts drinking his drink and munches on a few nuts when suddenly he hears a soft voice, "Hey, that's a nice tie." The guy looks around and sees no one except the bartender at the other end of the bar. The guy takes another sip of his drink and munches a few more nuts when again he hears the soft voice, "Man, you are looking good, have you lost weight?" The guy looks around, dazed and confused, and only sees the bartender down at the other end of the bar. He has another sip of his drink, a few more nuts, and the same thing happens again, the soft voice, "Wow, where do you buy your clothes? I simply love your jacket." The guy nervously calls the bartender down. "Do you hear voices?" the guy asks nervously. "Voices Sir?", the bartender asks, thinking he's got a weirdo sitting at the bar. "Yeah, watch this" says the guy. He sips his drink and munches a handful of nuts. Sure enough there's the soft voice. "Man, are you smart or what." "Oh, that", says the bartender, "it's the nuts." "The nuts?", asks the guy. "Yes, " says the bartender, "they're complimentary." QUOTES "I believe in person-to-person; every person IS Christ for me, and since there is only one Jesus, that person is the only person in the world for me at that time." --Mother Teresa When criticized about some of her actions (it is amazing ANYONE could feel comfortable criticizing Mother Teresa, but then....he was a journalist.:-), she responded..."No matter who says what, you should accept it with a smile and do your own work."
