REQUESTS - Someone requested that I send out a joke with every issue. Well, I can't make any promises, because it is hard for me to sit on a good joke for up to 2 weeks. But here's one for this issue... "Very funny Scotty, now beam down my clothes." (Courtesy of home school newsletter).

Another request was for me to send out my recipe for Meringue Cookies (also known as "Forgotten Cookies"), THAT I can help with....

MERINGUE COOKIES (FORGOTTEN COOKIES)

Preheat oven to 400 (this is VERY important). Beat 2 EGG WHITES until stiff, add 3/4C SUGAR & beat until stiff, add 1TSP VANILLA & beat until stiff. Then add 1C CHOPPED NUTS( walnuts or pecans), and 1C MINI M & M'S (can also substitute any kind of chocolate, butterscotch, or peanut butter chips) and mix in. Drop by 1/2 tsp fulls onto cookie sheets either greased or lined with wax paper. Can be close together, don't expand much. Place cookie sheets into oven and TURN OVEN OFF (yes, turn the oven OFF). Leave in overnight, ready to eat in the morning. Makes about 6 doz. You can also use sugar sprinkles on the tops before cooking. Very easy, very crunchy, very yummy and you almost always have these ingredients on hand.

PUT THE NOTES IN THEIR PLACES!

One of the most important things to do when you get odd bits of info, like the kind of things that will be included in these newsletters is to put them where you will use them. Otherwise it is out of sight, out of mind. For example, from the last newsletter, the Stamps By Mail section should be printed, cut out & put wherever you keep your postage stamps. Tape the note about Jungle Rot to the inside of the cupboard or medicine cabinet where you would keep foot stuff. The gasoline note on your dashboard, laundry stuff by washer. If the tip is about baby vaccinations, then stick the note in your baby book in the shot section. So you see what I mean. From now on I will have a note at the bottom of each info bit, to suggest the right place to put the reminder.

CULTS

While I am not suggesting that I think any of you are in cults, there is a lot of publicity out there now about cults. Many cults seem respectable to outsiders, and often loved ones will get involved without realizing it. Where do you check things out? There is a great source of free

information. It is an organization called CHRISTIAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE. You can call them to ask if a group is a cult and they usually have free info that they can send out. Their number is 1-800-2-JOURNA. They also have a web site that you can order info through at www.equip.org. They also have great books ("Kingdom of the Cults"), magazines ("Journal"), and tapes also. While much of the material is free and they are a non-profit organization, donations are always appreciated. POST IT...by your computer, or stick it in the front of your Bible.

VIRUSES, HOAXES, & LIES

We have probably all been the victim of email hoaxes at times. Before passing things on, here are some web sites to use to make sure that what you are passing on is the real thing.

http://krypton.mankato.msus.edu/~gerlie/www/virushoax.html

www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html

www.ncsa.com/virus

www.datafellows.com/news/vir-news/

http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

http://kumite.com/myths/

The above are for computer viruses, however, here is a web site to check out those "child dying & society will donate for every email...." type stories.

www.urbanlegends.com

Recent hoaxes going around.....Jessica Mydek/Am Cancer Society, LSD in kids' stickers, and email viruses. Some hoax warning signs....when it says things like, "pass this on to as many people as you can", or when it has what appears to be a professional person or organization who started it. Call them and check and often you will find the person doesn't exist or the organization is also a victim. By the way, you CANNOT get any VIRUS just by reading email (check out the web sites for in depth explanations). You can get an email ATTACHMENT and if you RUN the attachment then you can get a virus. POST IT...by the computer or in your web site bookmarks.

HOTEL/PCS SEASON

If you are military then you can call ATT for a Guide to Military Lodging for a lot of great info. Also if you call the new Army reservation line 1-800-GO-ARMY-1 then you can often get reservations at places, that if you called direct would tell you they were full. Don't know if they hold off blocks of rooms for the 800 number or not, but it works. If you decide to stay at a civilian location, then keep in mind that there is bargaining room with most chains or even independent places. So when they give you a quote on a room, ask them if there is a cheaper room or if you are eligible for a discount, often you get the best deals by phone. POST IT...by the phone, or in your car's road atlas.

MOVING BOOK (ATT PART 2)

Also ATT will send out free the Military Lifestyle Guide which has a fantastic countdown list for moving. What to do at 6 weeks out, 5 weeks, 4, etc. It is a wonderful help. Be sure to write things in the margin that you think of adding. For this book and the one above, look in the front of the phone book for the residential service ATT 800 number. POST IT...In your filing cabinet where you store your moving papers.

LONG DISTANCE CERTIFICATES

If you get a coupon in the mail offering you $50 or some other amount to switch to another long distance service, but you don't want to switch, you might still be able to use the coupon. Call your current company and tell them you received the coupon from the other company and would like to get credit on your current account for NOT switching, if possible. Whether they do this will depend on how long you have been with the company and how good a customer you are, and this is usually a one time deal. But we were able to get $50 in coupons towards our ATT bill, when ATT gave us credit for a Sprint coupon that was sent to us. Most companies will do something like this. POST IT...by the phone or with your phone bill.

FREQUENT FLYER MILES WITHOUT FLYING

In case some of you haven't heard about this, it is a great deal. There are credit cards that are sponsored by the airlines that offer 1 mile for every $1 you charge, or something like that. We have a USAir Visa and have been able to get about 3 frequent flyer tickets since we started in 89 without flying. Sometimes the interest rates are not that great, but if you pay your bill off every month (a very wise idea), then it doesn't make much difference. Call the airlines for more info. POST IT...with your credit card bill.

TICK/MOSQUITO SEASON

If you are a mosquito magnet as I am (Steve says he doesn't need repellant, just me standing near him), then you might be interested in a safe, cheap, non-staining repellant. In most pharmacies (esp. around military posts) they sell a little bottle called "Flowers of Sulfur" or just plain "Sulfur Powder". You can put this in a shaker (cheese shakers work well) and shake it onto your skin & rub it around, or even onto your clothes. One bottle will usually last over a year with a family of 4. This works very well and you won't have to worry about it taking the finish off things like many of the commercial repellants will do. POST IT....wherever you would keep bug spray. Note for people who are moving INTO new homes in mosquito areas....if you light citronella candles and put them near the doors the movers are going in and out of, then you won't have to suffer mosquito bites for the next month after the movers are gone. POST IT...with the ATT moving book! :-)

FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK

Had a few people that let me know that the baking soda/vinegar in the wash really worked for them, except on the really tough stains. Also others used the vinegar and got rid of their foot problems. Glad it helped. On the filling your gas tank in the morning, remember not to top it off or you may be losing what you saved as the gas warms out & comes out of your tank.

REQUESTS

Remember, if you have anything that you would like me to talk about or cover in the newsletter just let me know and I will see what I can do. Also, please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested. If you would like to be added or removed from the list, just

email me.

Decided to try to close with some inspiring quotes. So here it is for this issue....

"Ninety-nine percent of succeeding is keeping going." Dr. Bob Cook, Evangelist

Have a great May!

God Bless, Sharon
