Flu Shots are starting up in most areas on Oct. 1st. You can find locations near you, by checking out... http://www.findaflushot.com On this website, you can punch in your zip code and it will tell you who is having flu shot clinics, when & where. This year they have plenty of shots on hand and are not restricting early shots to the most needy. Remember, every person who gets a flu shot is a break in the chain of infection as the flu makes its rounds. Don't forget to check on that pneumonia shot as well. So talk to your physician and find out if you should be getting one this year. In addition to the flu shots on the website, talk to your local hospitals or urgent care centers, who may also be doing the shots. The sooner you get them, the sooner you can begin to develop that immunity. Don't forget to check out our back issue recommendation for tips on avoiding the flu & other illnesses. POST IT...on your computer & calendar. * * * * * * * Photo StampsWhat a neat way to send off Christmas cards or any mail, for that matter. You can have your favorite photo turned into honest-to-goodness stamps. Check it out at... www.photostamps.com They are available in 7 different denominations and the minimum order is one sheet. So the denomination will also determine how much it will cost. What a great idea for a new baby, newly married couple, or just for fun. POST IT...with your stamps. * * * * * * * "For Men Only"Not too long ago we recommended a book for women to help understand men
called, "For Women Only." Most of the men I talked with thought the info in the
book was right on the mark, and it was a real eye opener for the women. It
really helped them to understand the men in their lives better. Well, for all
those men who could never figure out a woman's mind, here's your chance to
benefit. From the same authors, and using the same survey skills that helped
them demystify the men, now the men can figure out the women. To read more about
it, or to order, go to... POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Hard Water vs. Soft WaterHaving recently moved from the gently rolling hills of northeast Virginia to the "beach" town of Chesapeake, it was a real eye opener when it came to the difference between hard & soft water. While hard water can be hard (pun intended) on pipes & fixtures, it really doesn't affect your day to day life. But if you try to use certain products with soft water you can end up with damaged glassware (permanent etching & cloudiness), dingy clothes, and skin problems. So if you move to a new location, and it feels like it takes forever to rinse the soap off your body when you bathe, then check with your local water company...you probably have soft water. If so, then you can take these steps to avoid problems. First, use liquid soap for bathing, this will rinse off better and help avoid residue that could lead to breakouts. For laundry, switch to a liquid detergent, if you don't use one already. In our previous articles we have recommended using the Arm & Hammer Laundry Detergent, because it has baking soda in the formula, and then using a vinegar rinse (see our very first issue). The liquid formulations of Arm & Hammer also have the baking soda already in them. When we switched to using a detergent with baking soda (or adding 1/2C baking soda to your wash with regular detergent), and then using the 3/4C vinegar in the rinse, we were able to almost completely eliminate the need to pre-treat with stain removers. It also really brightened our clothes and eliminated our need to pre-sort. But I still noticed a problem with soft water that the clothes seemed not to be rinsing out well enough. So we switched to the liquid Arm & Hammer Regular or Free, & it has worked fine. Also warm temperatures will help to rinse soap out of clothes better than cold. In the past, we were always able to get dishes clean even with the cheapest dishwasher, but not in this soft water area (although there were undiagnosed problems with our machine). We ruined almost all of our glassware before we figured out what the problem was. So make sure you have a dishwasher that has plenty of spray from a variety of directions. We recommend that you use the Cascade Complete LIQUID with Shine Shield, and also the Cascade Rinse Liquid with Shine Shield. These products, in our experience, do an exceptional job of cleaning without damage. Also avoid using the heat dry feature if possible. If you have extremely soft water, then you may also need to cut back on the amount of liquid detergent/soap that you use. Follow the cleaning instructions that come with your dishes or clothes. POST IT...with any papers related to moving, or on your shopping list if you are in a soft water area. * * * * * * * Recipe: White Bean & Sausage Rigatoni (from Harriett S.)

* * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE"I saw something stupid in the paper today - a new alarm clock that makes no noise. It's for people who don't like loud noises. Instead, it slowly hits you with light and gets brighter and brighter until you wake up. I already have one of those...it's called a window." ~~Jay Leno, TV Host, February 14, 2001 QUOTE"I can't imagine being that person at all. You don't know where life is going to take you. You think you know and then all of a sudden you realize it's all completely wrong." ~~Alex Kingston (1963- , Actress), who was so upset over the breakup of her marriage to actor Ralph Fiennes that she contemplated suicide. She is now happily remarried with a daughter and was speaking of that dark time in her life.
