This is not a search engine, but more like very detailed information websites to a variety of topics. The "Guides" to the subjects "are selected for their ability to provide the most interesting information for users, and for their passion for their subject and the Net. The selection process is rigorous -- only 10% of those that apply" become guides. Some of "the most important criteria by which they are chosen: high level of knowledge/passion for their topic, appropriate credentials, keen understanding of the web 'experience,' and commitment to creating informative, actionable features." So check it out and enter your interests in the search box; you might be surprised by what you learn, even if you are an "expert" in the field. POST IT...on your computer. * * * * * * * Markers for Potluck DishesWhile a piece of masking tape with your name written in marker placed on the bottom of cold or room temperature dishes works fine, it doesn't work well with dishes that need to go into the oven. Even on those cold dishes, sometimes the tape will come off & dishes may be lost or confused. But if you use a permanent marker (alcohol based), then you can usually write your name right on the glass dishes, and the name will come off in the dishwasher, or can be wiped off with alcohol later. This does NOT work for metal pans. Even with glass dishes, you should try a tiny dot somewhere on the bottom to make sure your dish won't be permanently marred by the marker. Definitely don't try on dishes that are special to you. POST IT...with your potluck dishes. * * * * * * * Visor Lights vs. Regular Car Interior LightsIn some states it is illegal to drive with interior car lights on; even if it is legal in your state, here are some tips to limit the dangers associated with bright lights while in the car. First, pull over before turning any interior lights on. If you are on a highway, then pull off at an exit that looks like it has an on-ramp as well. Consider using the lights on your visor mirror (if you have them) rather than the regular interior lights. Usually the visor lights are dimmer, but give plenty of light for looking at directions. It is also easier to direct them where they are needed, instead of a wide area. Try to have a passenger use the light, rather than the driver. But remember, you should avoid driving with interior lights on. It makes it more difficult for the driver to see into the night outside of the car. Even if you pull over to turn on the light, it will take longer for your eyes to readjust to the dark, the brighter the light you use. So you might want to wait a few moments after the light goes off, to allow your eyes to become reaccustomed to the dark. POST IT...in your car & with your maps. * * * * * * * Cordless Home Phone in CarIt's probably happened to all of us...you come home, you're trying to get the door unlocked, and you can hear your phone ringing inside. If you have an answering machine, you might be ok, if it is an important call & they leave a message; but sometimes people don't leave a message, or don't have a number to call back (like a repair man who won't come out unless someone is at the house). Consider bringing one of your home's cordless phones with you into the car. That way, if the phone rings once you are on the property, you'll be able to answer it quickly, even if you haven't gotten in the door. You can charge it at night on your return. For those who advocate just switching to cell phones, most emergency personnel say it is better to keep a land line in case of emergencies, so the 911 system can locate your home quickly, even if you are unable to give them an address. POST IT...with your phone & car. * * * * * * * Recipe: Triple Bean Salad (from Harriett S.)Continuing our theme of recipes to use up some of those bumper crops of fruits & veggies, a great recipe from Harriet S. While the recipe calls for cans of the beans, you could always use fresh.
POST IT...in your recipe box & shopping list. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: October 1st, 1997 Issue (Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes, Clergy Appreciation Month, Christmas Check off List, Voting, & More)It is time for a lot of things this month, so let's get started. On the afternoon of September 11, 2006, police say that Joliet Cedano was playing in a Palmdale, California park with her foster mother when the toddler was abducted. Immediately, an AMBER Alert was issued and a male suspect was soon taken into custody by cops a few hours later; only without little Joliet. Police now believe that the missing 5-month-old was handed off to her biological mother, Maria Cedano Ayala. Maria lost custody when Joliet was born addicted to narcotics.
