Dangerous House Numbers

An elderly neighbor down the street from you is having a heart attack and calls 911. The ambulance is heading to her house, and just before it gets to your house, you run outside waving your arms at the ambulance. The ambulance slows down thinking that yours is the house that called 911. This delays them from getting to the real victim, perhaps, in some cases, a life threatening delay. Would you do this? Of course not. But you may be doing it, without even realizing it, with poorly marked house numbers. When emergency personnel are hunting for an address, EVERY house that does or does not have the address well marked affects their arrival time. If you are near someone who calls 911 and don't have your address well marked, the crew will have to slow down to try to read your house number. So take a good hard look at how your street number is displayed, ESPECIALLY if you are in a new subdivision. Have your numbers clearly marked on your mailbox (BOTH sides, and the end AND make sure your flag doesn't block the view up or down), your house, and your curb, if possible. Try to buy the largest numbers you can find, and try to get reflective material so they are easy to see at night. If not reflective then black numbers on a white background. If they have gotten old and worn, replace them. On the house, try to put the numbers near the front door where most people will look for them. When you put the numbers near the front door, also try to have them near the front door light and LEAVE YOUR LIGHT ON ALL NIGHT (if not for emergencies like this, then for security reasons). Why mark all three (mailbox, house, curb)? A car could block the view of your mailbox or curb, but the mailbox and curb are easier to read than the house. Finally, please, please, get rid of the fancy cursive numbers ("Five Hundred Three" instead of "503") or other hard to read styles of numbers; just stick with the big block numbers. If you have neighbors with poorly marked numbers, offer to do it for them, esp. if they are elderly, in poor health, or the house is vacant (painting curb numbers is a great way for teens to make some extra money). It could be a matter of life and death, maybe even your own.

POST IT...near your front door (to check your numbers when you are out of the house) or on your shopping list.

Save a Doctor Visit

If you are followed by a physician on a regular basis for an ongoing medical condition that requires lab work, you may be able to save yourself the expense of an office visit. Most people will make an appointment with the doctor, who will give them lab slips at the appointment, then will want to see the patient again to discuss the lab results. Instead, call your doctor's office at the proper time and ask if they can mail the lab test slips to you, then you can make an appointment to see the doctor AFTER he has the lab results. Most physicians don't have a problem with this, depending on the medical condition of course.

POST IT...with your doctor's phone number.

Sermonaudio.com

This website www.sermonaudio.com is an amazing resource. They are "the largest and fastest-growing library of audio sermons on the web with over 95,500 free audio sermons in the highly popular MP3 format which can be streamed online for immediate listening or optionally downloaded to your computer or portable MP3 player for listening at a later time. You can search through all sermons very quickly by broadcaster, Bible reference, topic, speaker, date preached, and keyword." They also have Live Webcasts, the Online Hymnal, the Online Bible (including a Bible dictionary), Web Radio Stations, and breaking news in the areas of religion, society, and technology. So if you can't make it to church for a sermon for some reason, or would just like to get some extra study in, this website could keep you busy for a very long time. Check with your pastor about getting his sermons online. One of our past moving tips was to request sermon tapes/CDs from churches in an area you may be moving to, in order to help narrow the field more quickly. Well, this site could help do this as well. Most of the services on the site are free. Be sure to check out our Back Issue Treasure feature below for ideas on helping those special people to feel appreciated.

POST IT...on your computer and in your phone book yellow pages under "churches."

Mysterious Home Problems

If you have a mysterious problem in your home...water that seems to appear from nowhere, a noise you can't seem to locate, or a plumbing problem that seems to have a life of its own...why not ask the Do It Yourself Network about it. You can send them an email at hdproduction@aol.com. Or maybe you started a remodeling project that went south and need some help, then fill out their online form at... http://media.diynet.com/DIY/forms/diy2rescueform.htm
They might just bring some professionals in to fix the job for you. On the email, try to send photos, your address/phone, describe the problem and how you have tried to fix it. Even if you don't get selected for assistance, their website is a great place for Do It Yourself info... http://www.diynetwork.com/ Hiring someone to do a job? You may be able to get info that will help you to determine if the contractor is doing a good job.

POST IT...with your home repair books.

Recipe: Tomato Cucumber Salad

For all those with a bumper crop of tomatoes (this one's for you, Pam;-), here's a recipe to help use them up in a delicious way. Combine 4C chopped tomatoes, 1C sliced cucumbers (peel, but you can leave strips of peel on for color, wash outside well before hand, then chop into circle slices, then halve, or vice versa), 1C chopped onion (we like the red/purple onions), 3/4C vinegar, 1/2C oil(canola is great), 1/4C sugar, and 1 tblsp salt. Mix gently & well, chill for a few hours before serving to allow flavor to sink in. If you are looking for a shortcut, you can use 1 1/3C of your favorite Italian dressing, instead of the vinegar, oil, sugar, & salt. Great for cookouts.

POST IT...in your recipe box, & shopping list.

Back Issue Treasure: September 7th, 2005 Issue (Less Junk Mail, Clergy Appreciation Prep, Best Ever Brownies, & More)

While Clergy Appreciation month isn't until October, now is the time to start planning on making the month special for those special people. During August, you can check with your place of worship to see if they have any kind of Clergy Appreciation Month plan, and if not, then get planning. During September you can get the word out to the congregation on what the plan is. Remember, with the clergy around, it isn't possible to just make an announcement at the service. Sadly the links in the article are no longer good, but you can go to a new site we found... http://www.christianitytoday.com/holidays/clergy/
You can use this back issue to find out how to cut down on the amount of junk mail you receive. Then you'll have time to try the recipe for the Best Ever Brownies. To retrieve this back issue, click HERE.

Final Words

JOKE (More an amusing true story)

"I wouldn't want to tumble with Harrison Ford in real life...I threw that man through a window seven times and he landed on his head, got up, rebuilt the window with the crew and then got thrown through it again. I hit that man in the stomach and he said, 'Could you just land it a bit harder so I could feel it?' So I landed it a bit harder and he wanted a bit more so he could react to it. Finally, I just wound one up and let loose on him and he said, 'That's it!' It was the most humiliating day of my life."
--35-yr-old actor Paul Bettany talking about playing the villain in "Firewall" to 64-yr-old Harrison Ford's hero..

QUOTE

Sounds like "Crows being steamed to death in a pressure cooker."
--Stephen King, having "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" character from 1938 describe modern "music."
