"The Sonoma Diet" Book

We've received so many wonderful books to review this month, that we've decided to do an all book issue. First up, "The Sonoma Diet" book. There are so many diet books out there, but this one incorporates a California version of the very healthy Mediterranean diet. Healthy foods with graduated meal plans to help kick start your diet in a delicious way. They use a "plate and bowl" concept for measuring portions, so there's no weighing or measuring cups. They have simplified lists of what you can and can't eat for each "wave" of the diet, and a Pullout Guide in the back of the book. The latter could easily be carried in the average purse, and referenced for restaurant visits...what a GREAT idea! The whole food nature of most of the selections should help keep you feeling satisfied throughout the day. Just browsing through the recipes, you get a feel for that fresh, wholesome way of eating that is so healthy, and it's hard to decide which recipe to try first. You can read more about the book by clicking HERE.  If you like it as much as I think you will, you might want to check out the cookbook with even more delicious recipes coming out in October. In the meantime, be sure to sample one of their recipes in our recipe section below.

POST IT...on your shopping list. A great way to start a healthy summer!

"Let's Get Ready for First Grade!" Book

Little ones always seem so eager to get going with school, don't waste that summer! The people at Cedar Valley Publishing have come out with the First Grade book of their "Let's Get Ready" series. We loved the Kindergarten one and recommended it in a past issue, and we are just as pleased with the First Grade version. The books are designed to include what most First Graders (or Kindergarteners for that book) are expected to know. With bright colored pages, this sturdy wipe off book would be a welcome addition to any first grader's library. So if you have children, grandchildren, other friends or relatives with little ones, definitely check this book by clicking HERE.  If you order directly from the company at 920-994-9906 and mention the Make a Note, they will send it to you with FREE shipping.

POST IT...on your gift lists for little ones.

"Eat Right for Your Metabolism" Book

This book was so on the mark for me, that I had to recommend it to my readers. While it can be used as a stand-alone diet book, you could also incorporate its recommendations into almost any diet plan. The book is based on the theory that there are three metabolic types of eaters...meat, grain, and omnivore; with each having different dietary needs. If you eat for your metabolism, you can affect not only your weight, but also your health in a positive way. The format of the book reminds me of Jean Carper's books, with lists of foods that are healthy and unhealthy for certain conditions, rather than lists of detailed recipes to follow (although they do have a small section with easy recipes in the book, and easy menu plans for various conditions). I do wish there were a few more footnotes documenting the information in the book, but I really didn't see anything in the book that would be harmful to try, just food recommendations. I can tell you that when I started eating coconut, as the book recommended for hypothyroidism, my levels improved so much that I was able to cut my medication in half. I'm not saying everyone will have the same results, but eating coconut (or other food suggestions for various conditions) is such a delicious thing to try.:-) I also found that when I tried the recommendations for my metabolic type, I was less hungry between meals. But it never hurts to check with your physician before trying things out. To read more about it, go to... HERE.

Back Issue Treasure: May 4th, 2005 Issue (Less Junk Mail, Super Potholders, Chocolate Cheats, "The Magic of Ordinary Days," Overnight French Toast & More)

Speaking of books, if you missed our recommendation in this past issue of "The Magic of Ordinary Days," then you don't know what you are missing! This is an amazing book that tells a love story set in World War II Colorado. I'm not usually one for love stories, but this quiet tale of devoted love had me reading the book in one day (so much better than the movie, by the way). Learn tips to get rid of some of that junk mail, potholders that will prevent the burn, and ways to be a chocolate cheat. If the chocolate isn't enough for you, then try the recipe for Overnight French Toast! To retrieve this back issue, click HERE.

Final Words

JOKE

A husband entered the delivery room and his wife started yelling at him, "Shouldn't! Couldn't! Wouldn't! Won't! Didn't! Can't!" The husband was confused and looked at the doctor who said..."She's having contractions." ;-)

QUOTE

"Science offers the prospect of eventual cures for terrible diseases - and temptations to manipulate life and violate human dignity. With the Internet, you can communicate instantly with someone halfway across the world - and isolate yourself from your family and your neighbors. My advice: Harness the promise of technology without becoming slaves to technology. My advice is that science serves the cause of humanity and not the other way around."

~~President George W. Bush during commencement exercises at Oklahoma State University, May 6th, 2006.
