Credit Card Warning

Last month we warned you about the debit card scam, and I'm afraid we have a new credit card scam to warn you about today. Apparently a small number of waiters and waitresses have placed a skimmer (device that you run a credit card through and it records the number & other info) in their pockets. When you give them the credit card to take to the register to pay, they run your card through the skimmer, and use the info to charge things to your credit card later. To protect yourself from this scam, pay at the register, if the restaurant permits that. If it does not allow you to pay at the register, consider stopping by an ATM before hitting the restaurant and pay with cash. Even at the register, make sure the cashier keeps your card visible at all times, and only runs it through the scanner on the register. You should be on alert if they take the card below a counter or into their pocket to do anything with.

POST IT...with your credit card bill.

Furminator

It is that time of year when pets tend to shed the most. We have recently come across a new pet "brush," that really removes a lot more fur, than other products. You may have seen it advertised on TV with a kit of products (shampoos, brush, etc) that are designed to loosen and remove loose hair. We purchased the "brush," which is called the "Furminator," and have used it without all the shampoo products. It does seem to remove a lot more hair than regular brushes & combs. You can see a demo, or order products, online at... http://www.furminator.com   They are also available nationwide at PetSmart stores. Even the furminator alone is not cheap (their smallest one is about $35), but they do have a 30 day money-back guarantee; so if you aren't happy, then definitely take it back. But I think this is a great tool for cutting down on that springtime hair that your pets may leave around the house. Our lab loves it.

Clear Out Emails

Do you have a ton of email files that you haven't looked at in forever, but just don't feel like decluttering? Well, here's an easy, gradual way to cut down on those files. Just commit to getting rid of a certain number of emails over what you receive. So you log on and check your email, you receive 5 emails, commit to deleting 5 emails PLUS 1 (or 2 or 3, whatever you have time for) from any file you choose. This way you don't have to do everything at one sitting, but your files will gradually be pared down to the ones you want and/or need to keep.

POST IT...on the corner of your computer screen.

Bugs Around Doors

Spring has sprung (at least in most parts of the country), and the bugs right along with the flowers. Don't you hate it when you open the door to go out in the evening, and a swarm of mosquitoes (or other critters) fly in before you can close the door? You may have a pet that needs to be let out late, or have guests coming or going after dark, whatever the reason, here are some ways to keep those bugs OUT! First, if you know you'll have to open a door after dark, then try not to turn the light on near the door, until just before you go out. Lights attract the bugs right to your door. But if security is a concern or you have guests that need the light, then get some bug spray and (with the door CLOSED) spray a light mist around the frame and walls around the door AND around (not ON) the outside light (make sure it is turned off). Be sure to wipe the spray off the door knob when you are done. It is usually better to go in & out of the front door, if you are spraying the back one, and vice versa; so you don't open the door and get bug spray smell in your house. Depending on the weather and the bug spray, this will usually keep the bugs away for several days.

POST IT...near your doors, or on your shopping list.

Recipe: Easy Home Air Freshener

This is not a recipe to eat or drink, but one to make your home smell nice. It is a great recipe to cover up stubborn cooking or similar odors when you have company coming over, or you'd just like to make the house smell like you've been cooking some sweet smelling treats. Just sprinkle enough Apple Pie Spice to cover the bottom of a small pot, pour apple juice on top, to about 2" in the pot. Heat on the stove to boiling, then reduce to a low simmer. Continue to simmer until the fragrance has spread throughout the house (if you put your A/C or heating fan on, then it will help to spread the scent faster. This works a lot quicker and cheaper than most potpourris. If the pan gets low, you can add more apple juice, or just some hot water to the pot to keep it from going dry. When a realtor came through to show our home, I put some on before they came; the agent and the couple both commented on the smell and asked me if I was making cookies (by the way, anyone interested in a large townhouse in Ashburn, VA, near DC?...if so, give me a call.:-). Remember, never leave a pot unattended, and don't let it go dry.

POST IT...inside the cupboard door where you keep your air freshener.
