Watch Your Debit Cards

This is a story you can't afford to miss...apparently hackers may have found a way to get your PIN for your debit/ATM cards and have been able to clean out many accounts. Several major banks have been hit, and some are blaming retailers (when you purchase an item with your debit card instead of using your credit card or cash), whose systems may be storing the PINs. Some banks are reissuing debit cards and asking people to change their PINs. They are also advising people to try to use credit cards or cash for purchases, not your debit cards. They seem to believe it is safe to use the debit cards at ATMs. To read more about this story, you can go to... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11731365/  This is also a good time to check with your bank to see what their policy is on refunding your money in cases like this. Unlike credit cards, which usually have a $50 cut off (what you are out if someone uses your card to rack up bills), banks are not obligated in this way. If your bank doesn't have a cut off, it might be time to change banks.

Expensive Vitamin Combos

We've all seen the flashy ads for some new supplement that will fix every health ailment in the book and fold your laundry. ;-) But often these expensive combos with the fancy names/flashy commercials are just combinations of vitamins/herbs that have been around forever & used by millions. Recently my son brought me an ad for a "*NEW*" eye supplement with all kinds of quotes in the ad on how it practically gave the takers x-ray vision; they wanted about $375/6 month supply. When I called the company to ask the ingredients (usually they'll give them to you, to avoid any allergic reactions, etc), it turned out it was mostly Bilberry, Lutein, and another supplement (the name of which escapes me). My son was already taking Lutein, Bilberry, and the final ingredient was absorbed better from eggs, which he eats almost every morning. Total cost for a 6 month supply buying them separately..about $76. So don't be quick to purchase the fancy bottle, check out the ingredients & you may already be taking the supplement, or it may be cheaper to take them individually.

Biscoff Cookies

Tired of always sending flowers, balloons, or candy for special holidays? With Easter and Mother's Day coming up, you may want to check out the Biscoff Cookies website/catalog. Some airlines distribute these cookies in their little white & red packages to travelers. They are delicious and you can purchase them in beautiful containers. They do have other goodies as well, but the cookies are their signature piece. For Easter they have some adorable nested pastel pottery eggs with cookies inside. To check them out, go to... http://www.biscoff.com  Or call 800-422-2924 or for our international callers 415-956-8956.

Cell Phones on Military Facilities

Most military facilities, as part of a DoD crackdown, have instituted very strict cell phone rules and they are now in effect. In most cases, you are not allowed to use a cell phone in a moving vehicle unless you have a SPEAKER attachment, ear pieces are NOT accepted. In addition to this, in many states, a ticket like this can cause you to have 3 or more points on your license/insurance. So be sure to check with any military facility you are driving on, to make sure what the rules are, and adjust your cell phone usage accordingly. To read more about it, here is a link to an article on the new rules in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia... http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/print.cfm?story=99992&ran=62641

Recipe: Easy Holiday Ham

Here's an easy way to cook that Easter ham. Purchase a canned ham (although the recipe would probably work for whatever your favorite ham is), make rows of shallow slashes into the top & bottom of the ham. Put in a microwave cooking dish. Drizzle honey until top is covered, cover, and heat according to your microwave directions. About half way through the cooking time, turn the ham over, & cover again with honey. Finish cooking. Let sit for 5 min before slicing. This is a popular holiday dish at our home and is super easy, and very yummy.

Back Issue Treasure: July 15th, 1997 Issue (The Gift of Fear, Self Defense Sprays, Dummy Keys, Lite Cake Recipe, & More)

You've seen the warnings in the news about spring break dangers, and my number one recommendation to you (I'm probably preaching to the choir) is to avoid any spring break destination with "that kind" of reputation. But I am aware that it is hard to find any "calm" place during this time of the year, and many want to find a place to celebrate. So check out this back issue to find ways to protect yourself, including using "The Gift of Fear," self defense sprays, & dummy keys. Take precautions and have a plan, buddy up. Want to get into that swim suit for spring break, then check out our ever popular Lite Cake recipe (no, not the applesauce one). All this and so much more in this back issue.

Missing: Runaway Dad

Normally we save this space for missing children, but this case so enraged me, that I thought we'd make an exception and try to put this dad, and I use the term loosely, back behind bars. Byron Perkins begged authorities to allow him out of prison (where he was serving time for drug, armed robbery, & firearms convictions), so that he could give one of his kidneys to his dying 16-yr-old son. Once he was out, he was able to escape and show his true intentions, meanwhile his son continues to deteriorate. Even if he is caught, I doubt seriously whether he will give up a kidney, but I think everyone would like to see this piece of trash back behind bars. Byron Perkins is believed to be traveling with his girlfriend, Lea Ann Howard, in the 1994 blue-green Crown Victoria with Kentucky plates 784-BHS that they stole from her mother. They were last sighted in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They are believed to be traveling through Mexico. There is an extensive summary of the case, along with detailed descriptions & photos of Perkins & Howard, at... http://www.amw.com/fugitives/brief.cfm?id=37901
Let's get this guy put away for a long time.

Final Words

JOKE

Q: What Lies At The Bottom Of The Ocean And Twitches?
A: A Nervous Wreck.

QUOTE

Whenever she was asked, "How are you?," June Carter Cash (1929-2003, mother, singer, wife of Johnny Cash) would respond..."Just trying to matter." Not a bad attitude to have at all.

~~As per Reese Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for portraying June Cash in "Walk the Line"
