Alzheimers' Helps

Recent studies have shown that music, simple songs, and possibly familiar tunes have been a help in reaching patients with Alzheimer's. Also, we had a very positive experience using large bright colored children's books (like "Rainbow Fish"). Our very special friend, with Alzheimer's, suddenly became very talkative when my daughter was sharing the book with her. The lady started pointing at the pictures and talking about lots of different things, when for many days she had been mostly silent. So experiment and see what works with your loved one; it never hurts to try.

Realtors' Lockboxes

If you have ever had a house for sale, you know that there are a good number of realtors who barely knock on a door before using the key & entering a home. If you are home most of the time, or have a dog, this could prove to be a nasty surprise. One alternative that you can ask your realtor about is an over-the-door lockbox hanger. This is similar to an over-the-door wreath holder, but it has a hole at the bottom to attach the lockbox to. That way, if you are home, you can remove the lockbox from the door, so that people must knock before entering. It is also a good security measure to remove it during the hours that no one should be looking without calling first, before 9am or after 6pm. So you don't forget to put it on the door when you leave the house, post a note on the door you would normally exit through to remind yourself. Also, always have it posted in your listing that realtors should CALL before coming over, NOT from the driveway. And before anyone sends me flame mail, I am not saying that ALL realtors are rude. I have friends and relatives who are realtors, and they are just as unhappy about rude realtors as sellers are.

Dry Motel Room Helps

Especially in the winter, motel rooms can be some of the driest places around. For those used to a moister home environment (even better...a furnace mounted humidifier), a dry motel room can lead to very dry skin, nosebleeds, problems sleeping, and even susceptibility to illness. Here are a few tips to put a little moisture back into the air in your room.  Leave the door to the bathroom open & turn on the hot water in the shower for a few minutes, but be careful it isn't enough to set off the smoke detector. Open the windows (if it is safe to do so...safe neighborhood, upper level room, no adjacent balconies, and you're awake), if it is moister outside than in. Take any extra bath towels that you have and dip them in water, squeeze out the excess water so that the towels are damp but aren't dripping, and hang in the bathroom. If you are going to be staying in a motel room for more than a few nights, consider getting a humidifier. Most stores carry them for about $15, you can plug them in when entering the room, and unplug them when you leave. Don't forget to drink lots of water as well.

Final Words

JOKE

While ice-skating, a man had a nasty fall, sliding face down 15' across the ice. A doctor examined him and decided there was nothing he could do for the large bruise on his forehead. "Would you like some ice for that?" he offered.

QUOTE

"It is a waste of energy to be angry with a man who behaves badly, just as it is to be angry with a car that won't go."

~~Bertrand Russell(1872-1970)(British philosopher, logician, essayist, and social critic.)
