Locked Out of Your Car?

Why not AVOID being locked out of your car BEFORE it happens? Carry a spare car key in your wallet or purse, and teach your teen drivers to do the same. Most of the time, when we lock ourselves out, we still have our purse/wallet with us. If you have an electronic chip key, then you should also carry the code given to you when you bought the car. If the seller didn't provide the code, then contact the dealer and get your code BEFORE something happens. Otherwise, if it is after hours, you may not be able to reach the dealer. Make sure to carry the code in such a way that no one will know what it is. Some ways to disguise it...write it as a phone number, write it like an address with a street name, or reverse the numbers. Check out our Back Issue Treasure section as well, for another great keys idea.

"Healthy in a Hurry Cookbook"

If you like to eat healthy, but feel that all "healthy" meals require a full day of preparation, this book will change your mind. Each of the 150 recipes are designed to be prepared in 45 min or less. Most of the recipes are accompanied by beautiful full color photos that will make your mouth water. The easy to read ingredient list and directions are joined by a nutrient list, amount of time to prepare, and even kitchen tips. The majority of the recipes are main dishes, but there are also a number of side recipes, and a great little section on easy to make desserts (the Aromatic Rice Pudding was delicious!). We tried the Beef Stroganoff w/Portobello Mushrooms, among others, and it was also yummy. I was skeptical about the meals only taking 45 min, but they usually require even LESS time (but look like you spent a lot more time on them...don't tell your guests ;-). Check out our recipe section below for the Korean-Style Steak & Lettuce Wraps recipe.

Watch Those Dog Ears

If you have dogs or cats, be gentle on those ears, esp. the longer ones. We had a personal experience, or rather our lab did, with an ear hematoma. Dog & cat ears are more tender than we realize, and too much scratching (usually caused by some kind of ear infection or mites), shaking the head, or rough-housing with those ears, can lead to broken blood vessels. The blood then pools in the ear between the skin & the cartilage, causing sort of a bubble under the skin. IF they are small, some vets will watch them to see if they resorb on their own. BUT if they continue to grow, are large, spread to the face, or become infected, they can be life-threatening. I'd never heard of it, but found out that it is much more common than most of us realize. So seek treatment if your pet is shaking/scratching excessively. Teach the family, esp. children, to be gentle with those ears. If they need a little more incentive, let them look at the photos on this site... http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/hema.html  After the surgery ($200-$800 depending on the vet & your area), the dogs have to wear a special bandage, and sometimes a Elizabethan collar, for about 3 weeks, and you have to keep them from scratching or shaking. They can recur. For those of you who know him, our dog just had the bandage removed and seems to be completely recovered.

Keep that Deck Clear

Even if it is too cold to be using your deck, don't forget to keep it clean & clear. The mold/mildew spots aren't just caused by water sitting on the deck. It is usually a combination of the water and the pollen, dust, or other organic material (like leaves), that leave the marks on your deck if not removed properly. Even Trex decks will get marks like these. So save yourself the cost & hassle of getting the deck power washed. Just give your deck a good quick sweep every day, and don't forget the railings.

These wraps should be served with lots of condiments: kimchee, for sure, but also nonfat yogurt and shredded carrots dressed with rice vinegar. Serve the various components of the dish separately and let your family or guests build their own wraps to taste.

Final Words

JOKE

"In Hollywood, all the marriages are happy. It's trying to live together afterwards that causes all the problems."

--Shelly Winters, actress (1920-2006)

QUOTE

"...don't make me come across as a moaner. I think it's unacceptable to moan about anything when you're lucky enough to do what I do. What I'm trying to say is I'm more settled now. The thirties have calmed me down. I know who my real friends are, I know what I want to do. In your twenties, you just do everything. It's just overload all the time. In the thirties, you learn that it's OK to go to bed early if you want."

~~Rachel Weisz, actress (1971- )
