Trace Stolen Computers

Imagine...your computer has just been stolen...what would you lose? Work, school, or personal info, whatever you have, all gone. Did you know that 97% of stolen computers are never recovered? Computrace can provide a special tracking device inside the computer, so if it is stolen, it can be traced and found. Sort of like a car LoJack for computers. For about $30/yr, if you pay for 4 yrs at once, you can have that assurance that your computer can most likely be found. You might also want to bring it up with your employer, esp. if they have a lot of computers. For more information, go to... www.computrace.com  It isn't clear from the site if they will work on regular computers, or only laptops, but it seems you could do either.

POST IT...with your computer.

Offender Site

In the past we have done articles on offender sites, people who commit certain crimes, usually against women or children. I have to be careful how I word this article or it may be blocked by your email servers by mistake. But I think you know what I'm talking about. A new site is now available that can be used in conjunction with state offender registry sites. It actually maps out the offenders' home & work addresses, when you put in your zip code. You can also sign up for an alert service that there is a charge for. While they state on the site that the info is from 2004 records, it is definitely a tool that you can use WITH the state registry sites. Don't just check around your home, also check areas where your kids spend a lot of time...babysitters' homes, relatives, etc. Check our back issue section below to find out how to access your state registries. The new mapping site is... www.familywatchdog.us

Email Time Capsule

This is sort of a fun idea. You can go to this website and set it up for them to send you an email many years (up to 20) in the future. So you type yourself an email, enter it into their system, and tell them when you want them to deliver/email it to you. This might be a neat thing to do for landmark birthdays. On the other hand, when you decide how far out to go, just think about how often email addresses can change. For more info, go to... http://forbes.codefix.net/capsule/

ICE (In Case of Emergency)

We had several readers email us about the idea of putting emergency numbers on cell phones under an "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) heading. The idea is that police officers will pick up your phone and check under ICE to see who to call if you are unable to communicate. While this idea is apparently operating in other countries, like the United Kingdom, in the USA there is still some question of legality. In other words, the police departments that I contacted in various parts of the USA, say that their legal departments are still checking into whether going into someone's cell phone would be an illegal search or violation of their rights. It would be best to check with your local police to find out if their officers will look for ICE numbers or not. You can go to these websites... www.icecontact.com www.icesticker.com to get more info, and to purchase items that would allow police to search for an ICE number, but if you need to do that, then you might just as well keep a phone number on a piece of paper in your phone (between phone & case), purse, or glove compartment. If you are out without ID or phone, we have suggested in past issues, getting a dog tag with the info and attaching it to your shoelaces. This would be an especially good idea for children. You can also fill out info on this site... http://www.pleasenotifyme.org

POST IT...with your emergency info.

Missing People: CERMEN TONEY

Cermen (4-yr-old, black male, 3', 30 lbs, black hair, brown eyes) was last seen on the morning of November 6, 2005 with his cousin, Anquiatte Parker (19-yr-old, black female, black hair, brown eyes, 5'3", 140 lbs), at Parker's home in East Saint Louis, Illinois. They may have left from the home in a black 1995 Ford Crown Victoria with Illinois license plates 8286727. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Fairmont City, Illinois but the whereabouts of the child and companion remain unknown. For photos and posters to print, go to... http://www.ncmec.org/missingkids/servlet/PubCaseSearchServlet?act=viewPoster&caseNum=1031508&orgPrefix=NCMC&searchLang=en_US  Or www.ncmec.org , Then click on "More Search Options," then enter his name and click enter.
