And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * My Favorite: Books * * * * * * * BioTerrorism Info Wallet CardThe Maryland State Department of Health has put out a wonderful little info sheet with BioTerrorism info to fold and keep in your wallet. It covers, among other things, smallpox, anthrax, botulism, plague, dirty bombs, and sarin. For each disease/exposure it gives a description, symptoms, first actions that should be taken, and what the medical response should be. Anyone can print this out from their website at... http://www.dhmh.state.md.us/preparednessinfo.pdf It always helps to have a plan BEFORE something happens. POST IT...in your wallet. * * * * * * * Easy Marker for ValuablesAnother tip from our favorite home security TV show, "It Takes a Thief"(on Discovery Channel http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/ittakesathief/ittakesathief.html?click=dsc_leftnav) It is always good to mark your valuables, but using an etching pen usually takes a while and isn't very easy to use. Try using a Sharpie Security Pen with ink that is invisible except under a black light. You can write on just about any surface and no one will be the wiser, but it could help you recover the items if they are ever stolen. Do NOT mark with Social Security numbers, but some other number or word. The police will normally only return items if you can show them, in some way, that it is yours. I've had trouble finding these pens in stores, but Sharpie informed me that you can purchase them (yes, even our international readers) from http://www.ellsworthdirect.com The item is NOT on their online catalog, but you can tell them it is item #12100 a Sharpie Security Pen (w/ink only visible under black light). For stateside orders it is $1.35/pen with $4.56 shipping whether you order one or many (see if friends/neighbors might like to go in on an order). For international orders, please email them for prices. You can call them at 1-800-765-4031. You might want to check your local arts & crafts stores, or kid craft areas, to see if you can find one on your own. Or contact your local home security shop & see if they might consider carrying them. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Pink Eye HelpMost parents of young children know how often "Pink Eye" (bacterial inflammation of the eye) can rear its ugly head. Often this means 7-10 days of eye drops for squirmy children. But ask your pediatrician about flushing the affected eye with cool water. Many years ago a doctor we saw suggested that flushing an affected eye 3 times a day for a few seconds, with cool water, would help flush the bacterial buildup out of the eye to give it a chance to recover naturally. Ever since he recommended this, we try the flushing at the first signs of "Pink Eye," and the eye has cleared up every time in about 2 days without eye drops. As always with any medical condition, talk to your doctor FIRST to see if this might work for you. POST IT...in your medicine cabinet. * * * * * * * Displaying Political SignsIt is that time of year again, and it seems that elections get more heated every year. Political signs from both parties are often destroyed, defaced, or turn up missing. So here are some suggestions to keep from wasting those signs. First, when you post them, follow neighborhood rules. For example, some neighborhoods allow no posting of signs on public property. Instead of posting a yard sign (easily stolen), put the sign in your window. If you have small framing, then put it between the window and the screen. Hang it from an upper window or deck to keep out of reach of vandals. To avoid having to peel off bumper stickers later, stick the bumper sticker to a piece of cardboard and tape/place in your car window or dash. If the elections in your area are particularly nasty, then you could also use this method to take the bumper stickers down when you leave the car unattended. Remember, the greatest impact that you can have will be to get out and VOTE on election day. POST IT...on the October page of your calendars. * * * * * * * Recipe: Raspberry Lemonade Punch (from Jean W.)This is a great one for those approaching holiday parties. Mix 3-4 parts pink lemonade frozen concentrate to 1 part raspberry frozen concentrate (can substitute berry punch frozen concentrate), add water as directed, then one small bag of frozen raspberries. This was yummy...not too sweet and not too sour. POST IT...in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: September 17th, 2003 Issue (Hurricane Preparedness, Lego Catalog, Practice Quizzes in many subjects, & more)Head on over to this back issue to see if you are prepared for hurricanes and other natural disasters. Remember, hurricane season doesn't end until the end of November. You can also find a great source for reasonably priced Legos, without having to prowl the shelves of your local stores to find the one your child just must have. Don't neglect the school work, you can also find all kinds of practice tests in a variety of subjects. To retrieve this back issue click HERE. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Missing People: James BradleyJames Bradley is a 13-yr-old white male, brown hair (maybe died yellow in front)/eyes, 5', 127 lbs, who went missing from Rockville, MD on Oct. 5th, 2005. He is probably with Tonya Brann (AKA Tonya Bradley/Holmes, a 32-yr-old white pregnant (near due date) female, blond hair, 5'4", 115 lbs. POST IT...in your car or business, esp. if you are in the Maryland area. Final WordsJOKE (Speaking of elections... )"This guy owes me bacon now...you can't have egg without bacon" --Arnold Schwarzenegger (Governor of California, actor), after being pelted with an egg at a political rally.
