Security Laminate for Windows

You want to be able to open your deadbolts without a key for safety reasons, but you have those windows in the door where someone could just break a window, reach in, & unlock the deadbolt. We may have a solution for you. Security laminate is a clear film that goes on over the inside of the window panes. Once in place it holds the glass together, if it is ever broken; so while the glass may break, it should help keep a burglar from actually breaking a hole in the glass to reach through. We recommend you have it professionally done (do you know how often businesses have to charge more to redo a job that an amateur has botched?). Most companies that do window tint laminates will also do the security laminates. Prices will vary from company to company, but we recently paid $100 to have a door done that had one large piece of glass with a frame of small panes. Talk to the professionals to see if it will work in your situation. By the way, we first saw the security laminate on one of our favorite programs for security ideas...Discovery Channel's "It Takes a Thief." They actually took a metal baseball bat to the glass w/laminate and could not make a hole in it.

Fun Latin Book for Kids

Christmas is coming folks, and if you are buying for a child who is or is going to learn Latin (resurging in popularity among educators today), have we got a gift for you! "Tres Mures Caeci" by David Noe (professor of Classics at Patrick Henry College) tells the story of Three Blind Mice in Latin (translations in back of the book). But this isn't your run-of-the-mill retelling; there are touches of humor throughout the book. The illustrations are well done, and this hardcover would be a nice addition to any child's book shelf. Your child won't be taking Latin?...I think the book would still be a fun learning experience for any child. Our hopes are that this book will do so well, that Dr. Noe will be able to turn it into the first of a series of Latin children's books. To order or read more about it, go to... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0971445818/makeanote  And if you haven't already signed up for it, be sure to check out our back issue section that will tell you how to sign up for Dr. Noe's FREE Classical Education Ezine.

Carpools Part 2

This suggestion, after last issue's article on carpooling tips, was just too on the mark not to share with you. One of our readers suggested the following actions, if the person you are carpooling with is habitually late. First, know that if you don't say anything to the person, they won't have any idea you are annoyed or stressed by the lateness. So the first time they are late, say something to them about how you really need to leave on time, whether you are taking people somewhere or they are picking you up. The second time they are late, call them on the phone if possible & ask where they are, and again, let them know how important it is for you to leave on time. The third time, it is time for a bluff...pull your vehicle out to the end of your driveway, so that when the person arrives it will look like you were ready to leave. MOST of the time, this will get the person's attention, and they will be better (perhaps only for a while) about getting there on time. But if this doesn't work, then it is time to forget the bluff and actually leave. At this point, the person will usually either leave the carpool OR do a little better about being on time. Most carpools are a convenience thing, not a necessity. You need to remember that your time is worth something, and it is NOT a convenience if the person is always late. If you are in a bind and have no other transportation, then consider other options...public transportation, biking, walking, combination, or ANOTHER carpool.

Learning Practical Money Skills

The Visa Credit Card company has put together one of the best sites we have ever encountered for learning practical money skills. Whether it is budgeting, buying a car, renting an apartment, or buying a home, this site has just about everything covered. But this isn't some dry banker's dialogue, the explanations are very easily understood and written for people just learning the basics. The site also has links to the same site in Spanish and in Chinese. So whether you are looking for ways to teach your kids about money, looking for tips for yourself, or are new to the American economy, this is a great site to check out. Recipe: Orange Cranberry Loaves

About a year ago, we had recommended Betty Crocker's Orange Cranberry Bread Mix, but I've noticed it is rarely on the shelves anymore in our area. So here is an alternate easy recipe, for those who enjoyed the taste, but can't find the mix anymore. Now if you'd just like to jump to the recipe, you can go to this link... http://www.duncanhines.com/displayRecipes/displayDH.asp?recipeID=376
But here are some ways that we changed it to make it the way WE like it. First of all, we like to use the Orange Supreme Cake Mix (NOT the Orange Dreamsicle), although we know people who like it fine with Lemon Mix. We use dried cranberries instead of fresh (remember that Make a Note trick of soaking dried fruit in warm water for 15-20 min or so, to make it extra moist for recipes). We also like to skip the nuts and powdered sugar. Be sure to note that it is a SMALL (3 oz) package of cream cheese used, not the larger one. We do not recommend trying this recipe with any other brand of cake mix, other than the Duncan Hines. Makes 2 loaves.

Missing Teen: Taylor Behl

Taylor is a 17-yr-old white female Richmond university student, 5'8", 130 lbs, brown hair/eyes, who went missing on 9/6/05. She left her dorm room to give her room-mate some privacy and never returned. Her vehicle was found about 1 1/2 miles from the dorm, but her plates had been switched with Ohio plates. You can go to the link below for photos and more details. Keep an eye out for her AND for her Virginia tags JPC-2848, remember they are on another vehicle, not her white Escort any longer. http://www.amw.com/missing_children/brief.cfm?id=34584
