Finding Hurricane Survivors

Many of you are looking for hurricane survivors. Here are some tips that may help you locate those you love. First, check the survivor sites. Go to... http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2005/katrina/help.center  Then scroll down to "Locate the Missing" and click on the links there. You can also go to... http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2005/hurricanes/list/  http://www.hurricanekatrinasurvivors.com/home/  http://www.ncmec.org  If you want to put down that you are safe, OR that you are looking for someone who is missing, make sure the name of the person is in CAPITAL LETTERS in the subject line if possible. Google the name with first name, then last, then vice versa. Check these sites, and Google at least daily. Send out an email or call everyone that knows this person, to let them know you are concerned and want to know if they hear from them. Send out mail to the person, in the chances that it might be forwarded. Try to reach their home, to see if they left a note. Call hospitals. Contact the worship center, work, or other organizations they are connected with to see if they know anything. Then start trying to contact individual shelters from where they live, to more distant ones, to see if you can FAX a missing persons sheet (with large photo and name in big print) for them to post. If you aren't missing anyone, then help someone who is. Pray and don't give up hope.

Survivor Housing Help

If you are a survivor needing housing, or someone willing to house survivors, go to...
http://www.shelterforkatrina.org/
http://www.hurricanehousing.org/
http://adoptafamily.homestead.com/
There are also many organizations that are trying to provide the same service to people within their organizations...homeschool groups, religious denominations, alumni associations, so be sure to check with the ones you are connected to. Before offering housing through any website, be sure to read the warning at... http://www.hurricanehousing.org/host.html?id=
You can also Google the people's names to see what pops up (although they could use false names), and check your state's offender registries (check the "S" links section of our website to find the website you need to do this). Also try to offer help first (whether housing, clothing, or monetary donations) to family, friends, and friends of friends, before going with complete strangers. That way you'll know that it isn't sitting in a truck or bank somewhere going unused. It is a wonderful gift to open your home to someone, but be wise about it, esp. if you have children.

Less Junk Mail

Go to this website, to enter in your address to opt out of prescreen offers. That would be all those offers for mortgages, credit cards, etc. you get in the mail. The opt out info goes to the credit bureaus, and it does really help cut down on that junk mail. Go to... http://www.optoutprescreen.com

POST IT...on your computer, and with your credit bureau info.

Clergy Appreciation Prep

October is Clergy Appreciation Month and now is the time to start planning. There is a new helpful website that has a lot of great ideas to make the day special for those who give so much. Go to... http://www.family.org/pastor/cam/ Don't forget to show appreciation for those special people who serve 24/7. Even if you can't do special things throughout the whole month, you could still make Clergy Appreciation DAY (2nd Sunday in October) special. And even if your church doesn't organize anything special, YOU and other individuals can.

Recipe: Best Ever Brownies

Not often, but sometimes, it seems like the best recipe is a mix. A lot of people ask me for my cake recipe, which is just Duncan Hines Lite recipe (see our 7/15/97 Issue). Well, everyone was raving about these brownies at a little gathering I attended, and it turned out that they are just Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownies, made from a box. Go to... http://www.ghirardellimixes.com  You can buy them in many grocery stores. Now the lady did make her own frosting for them, by mixing 1 stick softened butter, 1 tsp vanilla, cocoa powder OR melted chocolate to taste, and powdered/confectionary sugar to taste.

POST IT...on your shopping list and in your recipe box.

Back Issue Treasure: July 6th, 2005 Issue (GasBuddy.com, Living Donor Kidney Transplants, Futons vs. Sofa Beds, Make a Note Poll Results (Do YOU Forward?), Black Bean Salsa, & more)

Is even running a contest that gives away prepaid fuel cards. The website shows the best prices on gas in an area, based on prices that have been reported by visitors within the past 36 hours. So find the lowest priced gas in your area, and help others to do the same, by reporting the prices you see. You can also read about being a Living Kidney Donor, why we think futons are better than sofa beds, and why you should rarely forward anything. If you get hungry while you are reading all this good info, you can also find a recipe for Black Bean Salsa.

Final Words

JOKE

This forward has been around for a while, but some of you may have missed it. It is titled... "You Know You Are in (fill in any state with hot summers) in July When..." Here's a couple of the ways to know... The best parking space is determined by shade instead of distance. You learn a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron. To read the entire piece, go to... http://www.kountrylife.com/forum/messages/85078.html
