As you know, the TSA (Transportation Security Agency) now requires that you leave your checked bags accessible to searches. But you've also heard the stories of thieves taking advantage of that policy and stealing things out of bags. Here's some info that may help you protect things a little better, but still allow search access. The TSA does have certain combination locks that they allow you to use, because they have master keys for them. You can purchase Travel Sentry or Safe Skies LLC locks at most luggage stores, or other places where travel locks are sold. You can read more about the locks, and link to their websites at... http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183 Then click on "Locking Your Checked Baggage," at the bottom of the page, then click on "TSA recognized locking mechanism." If you travel with other locks, then they may be broken off. Another less expensive option is to use plastic flex ties; used mostly by computer users to keep those multiple unruly cables together and in one spot. You can purchase a bag of them at most computer stores, and also at military/law enforcement stores (they can be used as flex handcuffs). You will need to use a new one each time you fly, and make sure you have something that will cut them off (the only way to remove them once they've been attached) at your destination. The flex ties MIGHT be more secure, since no one would have a key for them, and cutting them off might bring more attention to any thieves...they might not want to hassle with it. For more info on the ties, go to... http://www.staples.com Enter 362210 into the search box. POST IT...in the yellow pages under "Travel Agents," or in your suitcases. * * * * * * * Carpooling Emergency InfoSchool will be starting soon and so will the carpools. Carpools can be a wonderful thing, IF all the people involved are prompt. If you have a wonderful friend, but she's late everywhere she goes, this isn't the person to carpool with. Once you're in a carpool w/someone like that, you spend your time pacing in front of the window wondering if they're on their way OR if you should take your child (or yourself) in on your own. Another problem is that when someone is late, they will tend to speed, which isn't safe. Then you try to figure out a way to get out of the carpool without hurting their feelings. So try to find reliable people you can count on, to carpool with. If you find out later that a person is perpetually late, then just tell them the carpool schedule isn't working out for you, and they'll need to make other arrangements. Try to give them at least 2 weeks notice. Once you are in a carpool, be sure to get emergency info for all non-family members that you will be transporting. This should include emergency contact number, drug allergies, and any other pertinent info. Keep it in your glove compartment. Think that's overkill?...imagine the worst case scenario, a serious accident where all passengers are unconscious, and the emergency personnel not having any idea of who the passengers are. If you are going to be carpooling and don't have a cell, get one; we recommend Virgin Mobile's Minute to Minute plan w/auto top-up, which works out to $5/month if you only use it in emergencies or for a few quick calls. Go to... http://www.virginmobile.com For more information. POST IT...on your dash, or glove compartment. * * * * * * * Grocery Shopping BreakOur pantries tend to accumulate food items, unless we give them a clearing out now & then. We'll buy ingredients for a recipe & then never get around to it, leftover items we bought for visitors who didn't finish them off, or someone gives us an item we don't really use. Maybe it's time to take a grocery shopping break to help clear things out. Just go shopping one week later than you usually do. During that extra week, go through your cupboards and come up with dishes that will use up these odd cans & boxes. You'd be surprised at what you can come up with. At the end of the week, be ruthless and throw out things you know you won't use, or turn good items over to a food bank. After all, one man's "yuck-you-eat-that!?," is another man's "I-LOVE-this stuff." POST IT...on your calendar, and shopping list. * * * * * * * Replacement China/Silver/Crystal PiecesIf you are missing a few pieces of china or silver from your set, have we got a website for you. At... http://www.replacements.com They have one of the world's largest collections of china/silver/crystal replacement pieces. Especially nice for someone who has a set that is no longer being produced by the company. Also, IF you have items you don't want anymore, they do purchase stock if they need it. Many people only get their china out during the winter holidays, so now would be a good time to order things, to have them before you want to use them. This is also a good source to have on hand if a child (or adult) in your family breaks a favorite piece of grandma's china. For our international readers, they also ship overseas. POST IT...with your china/silver/crystal, and on your computer. * * * * * * * Recipe: Grandmama's Spanish Rice
POST IT...on your shopping list and in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: December 1st, 2004 Issue (Airport Pat-Downs, Real "Treasure" Hunts, Where's the Money Traveled?, "Cooking New American" w/recipe, & more)This issue only came out a few months ago, but still has great advice on making it through airline security as quickly & easily as possible. See if there is a real "treasure hunt" location near you. If you're traveling, don't forgot to see where your money has traveled too...read about www.wheresgeorge.com . Or you can just enjoy the last few days of summer reading up on "Cooking New American" and their recipe for potato & leek soup. To retrieve this back issue click HERE. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Missing Child: Justen & Ricardo MontezJusten (1-yr-old White/Hisp male, black hair, brown eyes, 1'6", 20 lbs) and

Final WordsJOKE"You need the ants to survive and take this ant poison-- poisonous to them, pretty harmless to us -- back to the nest. And if you leave the ants alone and this get this back to the nest, it will kill the queen. Just like in the human world, when the woman running things falls apart, the whole colony falls apart and the men just don't know what to do with themselves." ~~WTOP's Garden Editor Mike McGrath. To read the entire article, go to... http://www.wtop.com/?sid=553297&nid=25 QUOTE"I don't fathom the argument that respecting a person's right to speech means refraining from criticizing that speech." ~~Colorado state Sen. Shawn Mitchell, after fellow Sen. Peter Groff voted against a resolution denouncing University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill because, Sen. Groff said, "we have to stand up for freedom." Mr. Churchill has said that the 9/11 attacks were retaliation for U.S. foreign policy and has called 9/11 victims "little Eichmanns" (referring to Adolph Eichmann, Hitler's architect of the Jewish Holocaust).
