For The Kings of Barbecue (Father's Day?)!

You all know the kind of person I'm talking about. They reign over their barbecue grill with tongs in one hand and a plate in the other. They *know* (or in some cases *think* they do;-) the way to prepare all things meat, and love every minute of it. They...ARE the kings of barbecue. Now (drum roll please), they have their very own bible of barbecue! "Peace, Love, and Barbecue," by Mike Mills and Amy Mills Tunnicliffe, is definitely the definitive guide. Filled, not only with all kinds of proven, prize-winning recipes & secrets for barbecue and all your favorite sides, but entertaining anecdotes from the barbecue community. Or as it says on the cover, "tall tales and outright lies from the legends of barbecue." While I love to eat barbecue, I'm not big on barbecuing myself, but I loved this book. It is like sitting down with a bunch of down-home men folk, and listening to their stories of "way back when." It even has a section on the best barbecue joints around the USA. Father's Day is coming up fast people, and whether your dad likes to eat it or cook it, I think they'll all have a great time with this book. And just a side note to you ladies out there...this book could make you the expert that amazes everyone around you. After all, quite a few of the book's experts are ladies themselves like Mama Faye. The author has graciously allowed us to include some recipes. You'll find one for Magic Dust in our recipe section below. We'll try to include more in upcoming issues. THIS is a fun book. For a great Father's Day gift, why not get the book, make up a batch of Magic Dust in a nice canister, and wrap them up together. It would also make a great hostess (or should I say "host") gift for summer get-togethers. Read more about it at... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1594861099/makeanote

Color Changing Clothes

These amazing creations are great for a day at the beach, or a backyard picnic. Everything that you buy at www.delsol.com changes color in the sun. So inside a building, your shirt may just be a black & white drawing of a dolphin in the ocean, but walk out into the sun and suddenly you have a full color dolphin in a blue ocean. Kids especially love these things. I will admit that I think the colors are just slightly less intense in person, than on their web site. Great gift idea for those vacation visits. They have shirts, hats, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, nail polish, and even toys. Have fun!

WANTED: Emotional Control

Many of you run businesses looking for part-time summer help. Or maybe you need someone for a full time position. Whatever you are looking for, consider adding "emotional control" to any job description you may have. I saw this phrase in a recent ad and thought..."yes, it's about time someone put that in." Having worked in many different jobs, I can tell you that the majority of the time, problems with employees are caused by their lack of emotional control. So if you put that phrase into the ad, you will definitely have reason to explore the question in the interview in comfort. Think about your target audience as well. It may be wiser to send the ad out to youth clubs like scouts, military cadet programs, or religious groups, than to post it near a drink machine or pay phone where kids loiter.

Disposal Plates w/"Lids"

Now if your barbecue king wants to share with the neighborhood, here's a new product that covers the food without squashing it OR taking up too much cupboard space *before* you use it. Hefty's new Serve 'n Store Everyday disposable plates have interlocking rims so that a plate with food can have another plate put on top of it for a lid, and the rims will "lock" together. This would be great for sharing a meal, picnics where people might be coming back to finish their meal later, keeping flies off food before serving, or even just storing in the fridge. To see how they work, go to... http://www.pactiv.com/Products_NA/Hefty/ServeNStore/index.aspx  Available at stores where Hefty products are sold.

POST IT...with your paper plates OR with your favorite picnic recipes.:-)

Recipe: Magic (Barbecue) Dust (from "Peace, Love, & Barbecue" Cookbook)

There's a big shaker of Magic Dust next to the salt and pepper in my own kitchen and at all my restaurants. I wish I could figure out a way to attach the bottle to the restaurant tables because, at my restaurants, it's the most frequently stolen item! To make it a little more hot and spicy, increase the mustard powder and black pepper to 1/4 cup each. Mix all ingredients and store in a tightly covered container. You'll want to keep some in a shaker next to the grill or stove. Keeps indefinitely but won't last long. MAKES ABOUT 2 1/2 CUPS

bullet1/2 cup paprika
bullet1/4 cup kosher salt, finely ground
bullet1/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons mustard powder
bullet1/4 cup chili powder
bullet1/4 cup ground cumin
bullet2 tablespoons ground black pepper
bullet1/4 cup granulated garlic
bullet2 tablespoons cayenne

Final Words

JOKE

Editor's Note: You may have to be from the American South to get this one. ;-) "I tend to distrust any barbecue restaurant that doesn't have sweet tea." --Fred Thompson, author who prefers Luzianne brand tea, and packs several boxes in his suitcase before spending part of each year in Manhattan, "to ensure that I have quality tea." (from "Peace, Love, and Barbecue" Cookbook)

QUOTE

"Politicians used to believe they could sway votes with a dram of whiskey or a plate of pork. Now they do it with tax cuts and state lotteries. The barbecue was cheaper."

--Jim Auchmutey, at the Southern Foodways Alliance Barbecue Symposium, author and journalist. (from "Peace, Love and Barbecue" Cookbook, see review above)
