Less Junk Mail (for Mother's Day)

For Mother's Day or any occasion, it is always nice to get LESS junk mail. You can now sign your address up to "opt-out" of junk mail with new credit card or insurance offers connected with the top 4 credit bureaus. You can call 1-888-5-opt-out (1-888-567-8688), or do it online (much easier) at www.optoutprescreen.com  You will still get junk mail that isn't related to these sites or insurance/credit card offers, but I think you will see a big reduction in the amount of junk mail you receive if you sign up for this program. Check out the other programs on the web site that can reduce your junk email, and phone call solicitors.

Super Potholders (for Mother's Day)

You may have seen them on TV, but your local stores should be carrying them now for better prices than the TV versions. Silicon potholders are the latest rage. They look like soft plastic, but these amazing things are heat resistant up to 675 degrees! They are dishwasher safe (water-proof) and can also double as a jar opener. I will admit that they are a bit less flexible than regular potholders, but no more burning your hand because the hot liquid hit the potholder edge, or you held on too long. This would be a great gift item for moms, grandmothers (whose hands may be a little less steady), or less experienced children. If your local store doesn't carry it, go to... www.amazon.com And enter "silicone potholders" into the search box.

Chocolate Cheats (for Mother's Day)

Okay, one of the top gifts moms receive are chocolates. But we all have those special favorites that we love to taste, and those we'd prefer to spit out as quickly as possible. Since one man's trash is another man's treasure, this really is a waste. Our suggestion is for families (not for our guests). So with apologies to Forrest Gump, let's find out what we're going to get. When you receive a box of chocolates, take a sharp knife and cut each chocolate in half, so you can see what kind they are. Not only will you eliminate the waste of someone getting one they don't like, but you can also enjoy a variety of pieces without filling up as fast. Use a sheet of plastic wrap to make the box airtight, since they will dry out after being cut in half if not stored well.

POST IT...where you keep your chocolates.

"The Magic of Ordinary Days" (for Mother's Day)

It is very rare that I recommend a novel. Our days are so busy that sometimes we almost feel guilty unless we are reading a "productive" book. But this little number is so full of the lessons of unconditional love, that I can't see how you can read it and not be affected for the better. Set in WWII Colorado, "The Magic of Ordinary Days," by Ann Howard Creel, tells the story of a minister's daughter who makes a big mistake and ends up in an arranged marriage to a quiet farmer. While there is a side story of her friendship with 2 Japanese American girls from an internment camp, the real story is the patience and love her husband lives and breathes. Don't just see the Hallmark movie, this is one that you want to read and absorb. Definitely NOT a shallow romance novel. A quick read, and it won't be a GUILTY pleasure, because the example set in this book IS "productive." It's about loving someone, and learning to accept someone's love for you. To read more about it, or order it through Amazon, go to... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0142000906/makeanote  Your local library might have it as well. Order some extra copies, this is one of those books that you'll want to keep and share all at once. See our quote below, as well.

Final Words

JOKE (Funny, but true)

"Treat everyone the same until you find out they're an idiot."

~~Lucy Lawless (1968- ), Actress

QUOTE

"A...reader might learn that mistakes don't always hinder, that growth may follow mistakes, and that happiness may be found in unexpected places and in the company of unexpected people. Livvy's outlook on her mistake began to change as the book progressed, as Ray's love began to touch her, and as she started to see the special qualities that shimmered beneath his surface."

~~"The Magic of Ordinary Days," by Ann Howard Creel, Reader's Guide Section
