Sensors and Air Travel

If you plan on traveling for Spring Break, be aware that there are new anti-terrorist machines at work, and a note of explanation might be a smart idea to avoid delays. Many airports and other travel hubs (train/bus/subway stations) now have machines that can detect explosive and/or radioactive material, in addition to some chemical gases. Normally this wouldn't be a problem for most of us. However, if your job involves dealing with explosives (firing weapons, working near artillery, etc...any soldiers out there going home on leave?), OR if you recently had some kind of test that involved radioactive dye, then it might be a good idea to bring a note on your trip. If exposed at your job, then bring a note from your boss on the company letterhead explaining your job contact & how it might set off an alarm. If exposed by a medical test, then bring a similar note from the office where the test was done, explaining why it might set a sensor off. Do NOT offer these letters up front, they should only be used IF you trigger a sensor. Usually these things dissipate quickly, but it never hurts to be prepared.

POST IT...under travel agents, or in your suitcase.

Greatest Hits of...

If you are celebrating a special birthday, anniversary, reunion, or other special occasion, it is always fun to have music from the original year that you are celebrating. You don't have to worry about records or digging out those 8 track tapes either, most "greatest hits" of yesteryear are now available in CD form. The easiest way to find what you need is to go to www.amazon.com  Then in the search box, enter in "Greatest Hits 1980" (or whatever year you are looking for). It should come up with all that you need to make the party sound hearken back to days of old. Even if you aren't having a party, this is a great gift idea to remember a special time. POST IT...with your greeting cards, on your calendar, or under party supplies in the yellow pages.

Deck/Patio Campfire

Finally you can enjoy the warmth of a fire, without having to jump off that comfortable deck/patio. Patioflame provides you with a fire ring and the fire, without the mess. The fire is fueled by propane, but also uses those indestructible fake logs like gas fireplaces use, and the ring is okay to use on wooden deck, and brick patios. So you can just hit the "on" button, and you and your guests are enjoying that good old campfire feeling. They run about $279.

For more info, go to http://www.napoleonfireplaces.com/Webshare/outdoor/patioflame.html
Or email them at...ask@napoleon.on.ca

You can find dealers near you on the web site, or by emailing them.

POST IT...near your indoor fireplace, the exit to your deck, on your calendar, or in the yellow pages under "fireplaces."

College Scholarship Info

Never too soon to start planning. You'd be amazed at how specific some scholarships are, some even specified for left-handers, or those with average grades. Some good sites to check out are
www.collegeboard.com/parents
www.collegeanswer.com

You should also check out EVERY organization the student or family ever belonged to...volunteer, social, political, ANYthing. For a great article on all the odd things out there, check out this link...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61340-2005Feb28.html?sub=AR

You will have to register to see it, but it is free. Many colleges also offer work programs where students can attend free (College of the Ozarks, for example) or at a greatly reduced amount, in exchange for working in some capacity at the college. So read the above and find out why your child might want to consider attending their prom in duct tape. ;-)

POST IT...under "schools" in the yellow pages, or with your child's educational records.

Recipe: Quick Ranchero Chili (from Campbell's)

Decided to skip the recipe for portion guidelines for those who are watching what they eat. If you are trying to stick to a diet, but don't always have a measuring cup handy, here are some easy ways to remember portions.

This is a neat little recipe on the back of one of the new Campbell's soup flavors. To print out the recipe, go to... http://www.campbellkitchen.com/recipe_view.asp?lt=rs&rec_id=26231

But if you don't have website access, here's the way I like to fix it.

bulletBrown 1 lb ground beef (I think chunks of chicken/beef would also work well), pour off fat, then rinse 2-3 times with hot water to cut down on the fat even more.
bulletAdd 2 tbsps chili powder (more or less to taste) and mix in well.
bulletAdd 1 can Campbell's Creamy Ranchero Tomato Soup, 1/2 C water, 15oz can of small red/kidney beans rinsed and drained.
bulletHeat to a boil, add 1 medium onion chopped (about 1/2 C...I like 1 whole C) onions.
bulletSimmer for 10 min.
bulletTop with shredded cheddar cheese and sliced olives.
bulletServes 4, serve over plain rice to make it go even farther.

POST IT...on your shopping list and with your recipes. This is a really easy chili for those last cold days of winter.

Final Words

JOKE (Thanks to Thomas D.)

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said, "Johnny, what is the matter?" Little Johnny responded, "I have pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."

QUOTE

"The cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life which is required to be exchanged for it immediately or in the long run."
