"It Takes a Thief"

The Discovery Channel has added a new program to its line-up that is well worth watching. "It Takes a Thief" has, Jon and Matt, two reformed thieves as hosts. They cruise through a neighborhood looking for a home they believe looks vulnerable. Once they find one, Matt approaches the family and asks if the owners would permit Jon to do an actual break in, while the family watches with Matt on closed circuit TV, in exchange for a home security makeover. As an instructor of women's self defense classes, and being well read on home/personal security issues, what truly amazed me was how FAST one man could completely clean out a house of valuables. The first house was done in 10 min with a "take" of over $20,000 worth of stuff. This show is a real eye opener for everyone who thinks that a quick trip out of the house doesn't require security. It is surprising that Jon hasn't been punched after a break-in, it is obviously very disturbing for the family, even though they know they will get everything back. You also learn that all those hiding places really don't work. Watch this show and learn how to protect yourself. After watching others learn, it may even help a skeptical spouse to be more careful. The first run shows are on Wed. at 10pm (ET), but they are also repeated several evenings throughout the week. You can go to their web site... http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/ittakesathief/ittakesathief.html and click on TV schedule for more times/dates. Whether or not you have cable, the web site is also loaded with lots of good info, quizzes, and more to help give you info to protect your home.

"State of Fear" Book

Michael Crichton, MD is well known for doing a huge amount of research on the various topics that his novels cover (Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain, Prey). He takes all that info, and is able to incorporate it into a novel form that makes the science easy to understand for the layperson. "State of Fear" is no exception. This book covers a variety of eco issues, including global warming, management of natural resources, and celebrity advocates. It was a huge awakening for me, as I think it would be for anyone interested in the subject. Is there REALLY such a thing as global warming? It is definitely NOT a politically correct book, but he lists footnotes for the facts he cites, inviting anyone to do their own research. You'll never read an article on global warming the same way again. The story that goes along with the science material is exciting as well, and I believe it can be made into another hit movie...IF it doesn't get black-listed. So check this book out and let me know what you think AFTER you read the book. :-) You can read more about it, and/or order it at..."State of Fear"

Our public library had several copies, but there was still a long waiting list.

Late Night VCR Recording

Maybe you're like me...I don't have many TV shows that I make a point of watching, but it seems like they are all on at the same time. Here's a solution, many stations rerun the program later in the evening. The networks don't usually do this, but most of the cable and some local stations do. So if you like Stargate on SciFi, and Third Watch on NBC, you can tape Third Watch at the regular time, and catch Stargate around midnight when they repeat the show. Check the channel's web site (you can Google it) to see when the late night showings are, and learn to program that VCR. This is also nice if you forget to record something, or get home later than expected.

Recipe: Portion Guidelines w/out measuring

Decided to skip the recipe for portion guidelines for those who are watching what they eat. If you are trying to stick to a diet, but don't always have a measuring cup handy, here are some easy ways to remember portions.

bulletOne Cup of most foods (veggies, fruit, pasta) takes up the same amount of space as the average fist.
bulletThree ounces of meat/fish/poultry takes up about the same amount of space as a deck of cards, or the palm of an average hand without fingers/thumb.
bulletA thumb (from the tip to the hand) size piece of cheese is about 1 ounce.
bulletSmall snacking foods (nuts, candies, etc) are about 1 handful to the ounce.
bulletSnack foods that take up more air space (like chips, popcorn, pretzels, etc) are about 2 handfuls for an ounce.
bulletIf you are measuring condiments (mayo, peanut butter, butter, sugar, salad dressing, etc), the tip of your thumb (nail portion) makes about a teaspoon, and 3 tsp make a tablespoon.

Final Words

JOKE (Thanks to Thomas D.)

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life," said her mother. The child thought about this for a moment, then said "So why is the groom wearing black?"

QUOTE

Think little things can't make a difference?

"(Dr.) Motto had a patient who committed suicide from the Golden Gate in 1963, but the jump that affected him most occurred in the seventies. 'I went to this guy's apartment afterward with the assistant medical examiner,' he told me. 'This guy was in his thirties, lived alone, pretty bare apartment. He'd written a note and left it on his bureau. It said,"I'm going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump.'" --from the New Yorker Magazine article, "Jumpers," by Tad Friend You can read it at... http://newyorker.com/fact/content/?031013fa_fact
