Cold Room Solutions

There always seems to be that one cold room in the house, usually at the very end of all the heating vents, and usually a bedroom. But too often, people are still using out of date space heaters, which can be extremely dangerous. Life is too precious to take that kind of chance. So here are some solutions to look at BEFORE the cold weather sets in. First, check to make sure no one has stuffed trash into the vents or otherwise blocked them (we found pieces of vinyl flooring stuffed in the vent of a rental, that appeared to have been there since the 25 yr old house was built!). Open the curtains if the sun is shining on the window to capture that natural heat. If you don't want things to fade, then buy sheer curtains that will block the damaging effects of the sun, but still allow the light and heat in. Purchase thermal curtains which will help keep the heat from escaping at night. If you can add carpet or cloth wall hangings, that also helps hold the heat. Tape the seams of the window to block out any leaks, or use the plastic sheeting kits. Close off any vents/doors in nearby rooms that don't need the heat. Get a good thick (feathers/down work very well) quilt for the bed; it is amazing how much of a difference a good quilt can make, more than layers of blankets. Have the sleeper wear socks and/or a knit hat in addition to their pajamas...about 80% of your body heat that escapes does so through your scalp. The socks because there's just something about warm feet helping the rest of you to feel toasty. If you must purchase a space heater, ONLY purchase the heaters that have thermal sensors that will shut down if rising heat is detected because of something falling on the heater, or the heater falling over. Or even better, purchase the portable radiator space heaters which use radiant heat and usually have thermostats. For a good regular space heater with thermal shut off,  DeLonghi DFH132 SafeHeat Fan Heater.  For the radiator type heater... MG15T Magnum Heavy Duty Oil-Filled Radiator.  Also, consider buying a stronger central heating unit once yours goes out. Most units that come with homes are not efficient, and not as strong as they could be. Also have your heating system checked out before you use it EVERY winter.

ATTENTION BOOK LOVERS!

This one is for you! One of the neat things about reading a book, is sharing that story with all the other people who have read it. Or maybe you have a book that you would love to share with others. Here is a FREE and easy way to give your used books wings and follow their travels around the world. Just go to...
http://www.bookcrossing.com to start your journeys. At this web site, you can register your book & get a number for it, purchase (or print) labels to mark it, then leave (or as the site likes to say "release it into the wild") it somewhere for someone else to "catch." Then the person can read the book and pass it on again. This is an international site that we can all connect with. You can also sign up for email alerts so that if a book is released in your area, you will be notified & can go to pick it up if you are interested. This is great for children's books too. You can leave comments about the books and find other book lovers in your area to start your own book club if desired. If you live near an airport, train or bus station, you could really get some miles on your books. So check it out and be sure to let them know that Make-a-Note referred you. We haven't released any books yet (just found one that led to this article), but we have a stack ready to go. Don't let those books gathering dust go to waste, pass them on!

Free Classical Education Ezine!

Patrick Henry College has announced the creation of a new ezine for families providing a classical education to their children. The creation of editor Dr. David Noe, PHC Asst. Professor of Classics, the ezine will provide "biographies of important Greek and Roman literary and historical persons, tips and suggestions on teaching Latin and Greek, essays on relating the classics to Christianity, quizzes and exercises to develop skills and improve knowledge, reviews of classical homeschool curricula, links to reliable online resources in the classics, and Neology/etymology/word-building - SAT-style word preparation and contests." Even if you aren't homeschooling, I think this ezine would be a wonderful addition to public/private school programs, esp. if your student is taking Greek, Latin, or plans to take the SAT. The first issue, will go out soon, so head on over to sign up now. After all it is FREE! Go to... http://www.phc.edu/news/legatio/.  Then click on the link at the bottom, and follow the directions to subscribe.

POST IT...on your "to do" list and forward to any friends you think would be interested.

Free (Significant) Stuff

Recently, The Dollar Stretcher, ran a great article on a project called Freecycle. At Freecycle, people who are trying to get rid of certain items, can link up with people who would like to have them. But we're not just talking about junky little items here, we're talking pianos, appliances, pets and their gear, exercise equipment, and so much more. Everything is 100% free, you just need to go pick it up. If there isn't a freecycle group in your area, then start your own! How many times have we gotten something new and needed to get rid of the old, OR just gotten tired of storing that big item that we never use? Here's the solution folks. Check it out, and you might just find yourself some early Christmas presents. The website address is... http://www.freecycle.org.  To subscribe to the Dollar Stretcher or read more about it, go to... http://www.dollarstretcher.com

Recipe: Easy Crab Salad Appetizers

This is a wonderfully easy one for holiday entertaining.

bulletMix 8 oz of crab meat (the artificial crab meat also works well, but I'd recommend staying with the big brand names), with 8 oz of chive and onion cream cheese spread.
bulletThen spread on your favorite sturdy crackers, my personal favorite is Triscuits.
bulletTop with a piece of sliced olive or cheese, or half a grape/cherry tomato.
bulletCan be served cold or microwaved hot.
bulletShould cover a box-ful of crackers, depending on how thin/thick you spread it.
bulletAdd some chopped green onion for a little more bite.

POST IT...on your shopping list, and in your recipe box.

Final Words

JOKE

SOME young lieutenants (lowest officer rank), in their enthusiasm for their new jobs, can become a little bit obnoxious. One such young man was walking on one side of a wide street, when a Sgt. Major (one of the highest enlisted ranks) saw him and continued talking to the man he was with. The young lieutenant ran across the wide street, ran up to the Sgt. Major, and said, "Sgt. Major, don't you know how to salute!?!" The Sgt. Major replied, without missing a beat, "Yes sir, lieutenant, but I don't have time to teach you right now." :-)

QUOTE
