What if there's a Tie?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that neither Presidential candidate will receive enough votes to win. Here's what happens if that occurs. The House, currently Republican controlled, will decide who the President will be. The Senate, with barely a Republican majority, will decide who will be the vice-president. I also recommend http://www.foxnews.com for online election results. No matter what your party affiliation, I think the Fox News site has the most easily navigated, & clear graphics.

Batteryless Flashlight

How many times have you gone to use a flashlight, only to find that the batteries are dead with no fresh ones in sight, or worse, leaking? And let's face it, most of the time when we are going for a flashlight, it isn't for something that can wait. Here's the solution AND a great Christmas present for all of those gadget lovers out there. By simply shaking the Freedom Flashlight for a few seconds, enough power is generated for several minutes of light. A copper wire & magnet "generator" inside generate & store the energy that powers the flashlight. This is an ideal flashlight for glove compartments, the house & bedrooms for power outages, emergency/military personnel who have to have a flashlight in certain emergency kits ready to go at a moment's notice, boats, ideal for hanging on a life vest (it's also waterproof), and so many other places flashlights are handy. The Freedom Flashlight is shock resistant w/rubber guarded ends, waterproof AND it floats, has a lanyard to attach to vests & other locations, and operates in extreme hot/cold temperatures. Terry Peterson, from Freedom Flashlights, is offering a special deal to our Make a Note readers. For more information, go to... http://www.freedomflashlight.com/offer256.  If you are one of our international readers, you can email him to arrange an order for the country you are from. If you are an email only subscriber, you can call Toll Free: (800)365-0350 OR Email: info@freedomflashlight.com, and remember to mention the Make a Note for those special deals. As Terry says, one definition for a standard flashlight could be "a cylinder for storing dead batteries." So consider the Freedom Flashlight and find yourself free from worrying about batteries the next time you need a flashlight.

Missing Minutes on Recorded Shows?

The Make a Note has been hearing a lot of complaints lately about the broadcast networks practice of starting shows 1-5 minutes before the hour, and sometimes not finishing them until 1-3 minutes after the hour. No, it isn't your VCR acting up, the networks think that this practice helps them keep viewers into the next show, when (from what I hear) it only annoys people no end. NBC and ABC, in my opinion, are the worst networks for this type of thing. If you are trying to record back to back shows on different networks, then you'll have to choose what you want to miss. If you aren't recording back to back, you can set the VCR to start recording 5 min before the hour, and 3 min after. If you miss something, you can often go to the show's message boards on the network sites and get someone to fill you in. You can also let the networks know how you feel about this practice, BE SURE TO CITE THE PARTICULAR SHOWS YOU WATCH THAT THEY DO IT ON. Use the contact info below, to voice your opinions (use the web sites to contact the local affiliates as well)...

Charity for Churches (and Other Groups)

Some people say, that the origin of the term "easy mark," came from the practice (during the depression) of homeless people, sometimes con artists, making a white chalk mark on the curb in front of homes, churches, or businesses, whose residents provided a handout. The next wanderer would come along and know to look for the "easy mark." Too often honest people on hard times, are too proud or ashamed to ask for help. Then there is the other extreme where people get themselves in trouble, and want everyone else to bail them out. To remedy the problem of honest people not asking for help, encourage everyone to keep an eye out for those in honest need. While they may not take an outright gift of charity, they might accept anonymous help; after all, who are they going to return it to? For the problem of people who get themselves in trouble and then practically demand rescue, I make the following suggestions. If someone approaches you just asking for money, offer them work for pay. One TV station went to 20 men who were standing on corners with signs saying, "Will Work for Food" or "Need Work," and offered them work. Only one man took them up on the offer, one of the other men was seen driving away in his Cadillac that was parked a discreet distance away. The 19 men, and many others have learned if the sign says they will work, people will just drop money in their buckets. The same news crew found that many homeless shelters have an employment assistance office that is rarely used. In many cases, many people have found they would rather panhandle, than work. In one office I worked in, I would have many people come in with obviously brand new designer clothes/jewelry, then tell me they couldn't pay 50 cents on a bill. If they WILL work, find some odd jobs, or a regular job for them if possible. If someone is asking for money for food, buy a meal for them, so they can't use the money for drugs instead. If someone wants money to pay their bills, insist that they attend financial counseling sessions before receiving any funds. Most counties have some kind of free financial counseling. Many religious, charity, or social groups also need to watch for the con artists who will join a group just to get sympathy and money, then move on to the next group. Check people out as thoroughly as the situation allows...google them, check with local law enforcement, contact other churches, etc. Remember when you bail people out who get in the situation by their own (continuing) foolishness, then you do them a disservice; they will never learn. Better for them to learn to clean up their own mess, and be responsible. We are NOT saying that there aren't people who are genuinely in need out there, we are saying that you should be good stewards of the charity that you give out. Otherwise it is doing more harm, than good.

Final Words

JOKE (Thanks to FL resident Judy H.)

A woman went to the doctor's office where she was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor marched down the hallway to the back where the younger doctor was and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?!!" The new younger doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?"
