NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * My Favorite: Books * * * * * * * Flu PreventionSince many will be without a flu shot this year, we'd like to point out ways to protect yourself that you might not have considered. First, germs are spread through the air, but also on contact surfaces. Most people cough into their hands when they are ill, and then proceed to touch a lot of things. Things that other people might come along and touch, pick up the germs, then touch around their eyes, nose, or mouth, where a virus can easily slip into the body. Do you use hand sanitizer? If not, you might consider starting. You can use it anywhere vs. finding a sink whenever you need it. Watch for doorknobs to rest rooms, restaurants, & other public places, not to mention your own home (the latter esp. if you have children who might not always wash their hands after the bathroom). Try to use a paper towel to open the door to leave a bathroom AND turn off the faucets. If you must grab a handle, try to grab it in a location where not as many people would reach; most people grab the bottom part of a door handle. Or use your shoulder or foot to push open a door. Make sure to sanitize the handles to the fridge, faucets in your bathrooms, and doorknobs at home as well. Are you going to a restaurant buffet?...sanitize your hands after going through, a lot of people handle those tongs. If you see a child, or God forbid, an adult actually put their hands into a buffet container, tell the waiter that the container needs to be changed. Watch how a waiter/waitress puts your drinks down on the table, do they hold the base of the glass, or (usually if poorly trained) have their fingers in a claw around the rim of the glass. If the latter, ask for another round & explain why, you obviously don't want to put your mouth where their fingers have been. Don't allow kids in particular to lick the outside of food/drink packages, and reconsider any packages that require mouth to package contact like the new sports gel-pacs, squeeze yogurt, etc. People have to handle these things to put them on display in the store. Elevator buttons and escalator hand rails...need I say more? Any museum with hands on exhibits. A new product that is also available that might help is the Kleenex antibacterial tissues. Keep little bottles of hand sanitizer in your cars, kids' school packs, purses, and near every sink (kids may not take the time to wash, but may take the time to sanitize). If you work with children, consider having them sanitize their hands on a regular basis with they are with you. I'm not saying we have to be a Monk (obsessive-compulsive TV character), but we should be careful, esp. this year. POST IT...on the fridge, as a daily reminder. * * * * * * * A Sister w/Cancer?If you live in the US, are between the ages of 35-74, have never had breast cancer, but have/had a sister who does/did, then you can be a part of a huge National Institutes of Health study to try to find the causes (and prevent) breast cancer. There is no cost to join and it mostly involves filling out questionnaires and giving a few initial samples. You don't have to go to a medical facility, they can even send someone to your own home at your convenience. For more info, go to... http://www.sisterstudy.org Help be part of this study to stop this dreadful cancer. POST IT...on your computer, and email all your friends that might qualify. * * * * * * * Stairs, Where to LookDuring this flu season, there might be times when people are not feeling well, but have to negotiate stairs on their own. To help avoid falls, people should try to look down at the stairs as they are going up, so that if they fall, they would be more likely to fall forward. When they are coming down the stairs, they should still watch the stairs as their feet are being planted, but should try to keep their shoulders back & lean back more, so that they will fall backwards if they do fall. But never do anything that makes you feel off balance. Always use the handrails, and keep a phone near the bottom of the stairs in case the worst happens, or have a cell phone clipped to your clothing. POST IT...in your medicine cabinet. * * * * * * * Current/Former Federal Inmate?Did you know that you can check an inmate locator database and find out if someone is, or ever was (from 1982 to present), an inmate in a Federal Prison? It will only tell you about whether they were FEDERAL inmates, state prisons are not part of the database. It will not tell you what they are/were in for, only where they are if a current inmate and when they might be released, OR if they are a past guest of the federal system, then when they were released. If you'd like to try it out, you might use the name of a prisoner currently in the news...Martha Stewart. Go to... http://www.bop.gov, then click on Inmate Locator, then click on "Search by First & Last Name". POST IT...on your computer, and under security systems in your yellow pages. * * * * * * * Recipe: Angel Toffee DessertThis recipe was a big hit at our last potluck, and soooo easy to make. It
tastes like a rich dessert, but can be almost completely fat free. I can't
remember the source (I cut things out & forget where or who they came from), so
if you know the source, let me know so I can credit them.
POST IT...in your recipe box & shopping list. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: December 17th, 2003Check out this back issue for a site to help you track the flu in your area, or those of loved ones. If someone is in poor health and planning a trip to an area where it is epidemic, then you might consider postponing that trip. Did you know that a dry house can make you more susceptible to illness?...find out how you might remedy that situation. Christmas is coming and do you really want to squeeze your feet into those uncomfortable dress shoes another year?...you might consider our recommendation to give your feet a vacation at the next party. Protect yourself or your loved ones with a personal GPS emergency beacon, to give the outdoor enthusiast, AND his family at home, some peace of mind. All this, plus our usual joke and quote, in this wonderful back issue. To retrieve this back issue click HERE. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Missing Adult: Jeffrey BenJeffrey Ben (22 yr old, American Indian male, 6'3", 150 lbs, brown hair/eyes, with tattoos on both shoulders, one is the head of an Indian woman) disappeared in 2001 at the age of 18 from Clayton, OK, USA. His truck was later found in Tuskahoma, OK, but Jeffrey has not been seen since. For a photo, go to... http://www.theyaremissed.org/ncma/gallery/ncmaprofile_all.php?A200300922W. Please take a good look at the photos, esp. if you are in the OK area. POST IT...in your car and/or business. EDITOR'S NOTE: Some of you have tried to access files of children featured in past issues without success. This usually means the children were found and the files were removed. Final WordsJOKENormally we don't do this, but I think this is worth the link. Go to this
link for our joke, it involves doggy botox.
