Heart Attack Help

This will be welcome news for our readers, and/or their loved ones, with heart problems. The US government has now approved purchase of AEDs by private citizens with prescriptions. AEDs are defibrillators, the machines that give your heart a shock, if it needs it, to help it start beating again or have it beating correctly. These machines are completely automated, the same kind of machines you see in restaurants and other public places. While you must take the Red Cross AED class, this machine talks you through everything. To be able to use an AED before rescue personnel can even have time to arrive, could mean the difference between life and death. Go to this web page to learn more about it... http://www.redcross.org/services/hss/courses/aed.html#top  It will also have links to find classes near you.

20 Questions

If you are looking for a Christmas gift that would be fun for just about any age, consider "20 Questions." "20 Questions" is a hand held computer game in a little ball. It asks you 20 Questions about the item that you are thinking about. You answer the questions and more often than not, this machine figures out what your item is. It is a quiet game, and is almost more fun to lose, than to win, because it amazes people when the machine gets the answer right. Everyone wants to try this game out once they see how it works. It is good for kids too, who have to consider the answers to the questions, and properly categorize the items. The whole family will want to get into the act and decide how to answer questions to try to stump the "brain." And like many of the "good" games, it is very reasonably priced. They can be purchased at Wal-Marts and on Amazon...CLICK HERE

Moms in Print

If you are a mom with an idea for a book, or a book already written, you might want to consider contacting Moms in Print. This young publishing company specifically targets writers who are moms, to try to help them get their material published. Unlike other publishing companies, Moms in Print (MIP), will help you to set up a web site, put together a media packet, publish your book, provide flyers/courtesy copies, and help you navigate public relations and marketing for 18 months...if they select your book for publication, of course. They are currently updating their web site, so please be patient. They plan to have a questionnaire on the web site to help you decide if you really are ready for the kind of work you will have to do to promote any book of yours that is published. The percentage of the sales that you earn is also much higher than most publishing companies. All submissions are read and sent back with feedback, even if they are rejected for publication. They also plan to offer teleclasses and consulting for an additional charge. So if you think you might be interested, bookmark their site and check back often to read their new submission guidelines once they are posted. Go to... http://www.momsinprint.com/index.html

Recipe: Chocolate-Orange Silk Mousse

Prep Time: 30 Minutes | Start to Finish: 1 1/2 Hours | To Make Ahead: The Mousse will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 2 days | Ease of Preparation: Easy

Intense, heavenly chocolate is all you'll think about when you taste this dessert, though it's packed with all the good things found in tofu. Make sure the tofu is gossamer-smooth before adding the chocolate mixture. (Photo: Page 222.)

bullet1 12.3-ounce package reduced-fat silken tofu (1 1/2 cups)
bullet3 ounces good-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened), finely chopped
bullet1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
bullet1/4 cup boiling water
bullet1 teaspoon vanilla extract
bullet1/2 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
bullet2/3 cup confectioners' sugar
bullet2/3 cup chocolate wafer crumbs (3 ounces) (see Notes)

Nutritional Note:
Many commercial cookies and wafers contain partially hydrogenated oil, a source of trans-fatty acids. Fortunately, brands made without these oils, such as Newman's Own Organics and Mi-Del, are every bit as tasty. Look for them in the natural foods section of large supermarkets. 1. Puree tofu in a food processor, scraping down the sides as needed, until completely smooth.
2. Combine chocolate and cocoa in a medium bowl. Add boiling water and stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth. Stir in vanilla and orange zest. Mix in confectioners' sugar, a little at a time, until smooth. Add the chocolate mixture to the processor; puree until smooth and well blended, scraping down the sides as needed.
[To make wafer crumbs: Place wafers in a ziplock plastic bag, seal and crush with a rolling pin. Alternatively, pulse wafers in a food processor.] 3. Spoon about 2 teaspoons chocolate crumbs into each of 5 parfait glasses or dessert dishes. Add about 1/4 cup mousse, then layer with another 2 teaspoons crumbs. Top with another 1/4 cup mousse and finish with a sprinkling of crumbs. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Makes 5 servings, about 1/2 cup each.

Per Serving: 266 Calories; 9 g Fat (4 g sat, 0 g mono); 1 mg Cholesterol; 42 g Carbohydrate; 8 g Protein; 4 g Fiber; 125 mg Sodium.

Nutritional Bonus: 16% DV Fiber.

Final Words

JOKE (Thanks to FL resident Judy H.)

(This is a salute to all those FL residents who are able to keep their sense of humor in spite of it all.)  Have you seen the new Florida postcard? It is a photo of Florida obscured by the clouds of a spinning hurricane. The card says, "Welcome to Florida," and with an arrow pointing to the center of the hurricane, the words, "You are here."

QUOTE

"The mere absence of war, is not peace."

--Former President John F. Kennedy, the year he died.
