How Hot are Those Peppers?

Ever wondered how hot those peppers you love so much rank on a pepper scale? Well, someone actually invented a scale for peppers. At this site you can read up on the man who came up with the Scoville Scale, how "hot" is measured, and see how your pepper ranks. You can check it out by going to... http://groups.msn.com/foodiesCorner/scovillescale.msnw
If you're feeling really brave (or possibly foolish ;-), you can even try the one at the top of the scale, the Habanero, which can be 10 times hotter than Cayenne. Be careful out there. Just in case, it might help you to know that I've heard sour cream kills a pepper burn in the mouth fast.

POST IT...with your pepper jars, and in your computer favorites file along with recipe sites.

How Much is the Alcohol REALLY Costing You?

With some kids heading off to colleges where parties can be the norm, this web site may be one you need to email your students. While many will scoff at the health dangers of alcohol, they may be more affected by how much money and how many calories their "habit" may be costing them. At... http://www.e-chug.com People can fill out a questionnaire about their drinking habits free of charge. When you click on this link, you will see a tab that says, "Try it Out," just under the main title. With the info that the student inputs, it will let them know how much money this is costing them monthly. Also how many hamburgers are equivalent to the number of alcohol calories consumed. When faced with losing that much money, or adding that many pounds, many students (and others) may decide it just isn't worth it.

POST IT...in your computer favorites with school links.

Watch Those Sales!

While some hardy shoppers follow the sales to several stores every week, most of us prefer to find the store with the best prices and just stick with it. Often on the sales that save you a few cents, you'll just end up spending it on gas if you chase the sales. But there are certain items that make it worth the trek to the store with the sale. Make a list of items that you consume in high amounts or on a regular basis. Unless you have a big freezer or fridge, don't bother with anything frozen/refrigerated. Don't forget to consider your vitamins/supplements. Now think about the sales you have seen on these items...when they are on sale, do you save just a few cents or dollars? Cross off the ones that will just save you a few cents, it probably wouldn't cover the gas to go to another store to "save." Now from your working list, make a list of the items where you can save dollars at sales and post it near your shopping list. Whenever you get that store flyer, from a store you don't use, check for those items. If something is on sale, then check to see when the sale is taking place, and if there is a limit on the number you can purchase. Check with the store on the limits, some stores limit for the duration of the sale, some limit daily purchases. Make the rounds of those stores to stock up. Don't think it is worth it to go to another store? Listen to this...I use Osteo-Bi-Flex (Glucosamine/Chondroitin) for my arthritis (see our July 17th, 2002 issue for more info on how much this might help your joint pain). Normally the Double Strength bottles of 110 tablets are $40, but about every 6 months our local Giant chain runs a half price sale ($20/bottle) on them for anyone that uses the store's Bonus Card. They limit sales to 6 bottles daily, so I can get 6 bottles a day for a sale that lasts 7 days. Often the store closest will run out, so I will hit the other stores as well. I always check to make sure that the bottles won't expire before I can use them. So stocking up on a year's worth of the product can save me $160 a year. By the way, for our Osteo-Bi-Flex users, Giant Foods are located in VA, DE, DC, and MD and the sale is on now and lasts through Saturday. You can go to their web site to find the store nearest you...
http://www.giantfood.com/locator.cfm
Find your store's circular to make sure it is on sale where you are as well. So keep that list up near your shopping list and watch for those sales.

POST IT...near your shopping list.
