Child Guard

There is still a lot of summer left, with crowds & celebrations, and it is so easy for a child to wander off while we are distracted. Here is a new tool to help keep an extra "eye" on your child. It is called Child Guard and consists of 2 parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The part that the child wears is shaped like an animal necklace, the adult's part like a key chain. You can adjust the distance and if the transmitter & receiver get close to exceeding the distance set, then the adult's part begins to beep. The distance can be set from 6-30 feet. We should ALWAYS be careful and not rely on any one object to protect our children, but this could be another tool in that arsenal of protection. For those without young children, they also suggest it could be used as a purse "watcher". For example if you wanted to dance at a club without your purse, you could leave it at your table (hopefully not in easy access) with the transmitter in the purse and the receiver with you, so it would beep if someone started to take off with it. The cheapest place I have been able to find this product online is at... http://www.pebbleco.com Scroll down until you see Child Guard in the list of products in the left margin near the bottom of the page. It runs $15 plus shipping. I have never ordered from this company before, but have been unable to find any complaints against them on the Better Business Bureau site or anywhere else. You can also Google "Child-Guard" to find other sites that carry it. If you want something even more high tech, check out our Back Issue Treasure below.

Which Cousin Are You?

Summer is here and families get together. It seems that a common thread of conversation is related to cousins. Are you my second cousin, or first cousin twice removed? Well, it doesn't cover ALL the connections, but this little online chart, that you can print out, will answer a lot of those questions. Go to... http://stellar-one.com/genealogy/cousins.htm They also have an example that you can click on if you are confused.

People's Pharmacy Guide to Home & Herbal Remedies

This book is one of those invaluable resources from our friends at the People's Pharmacy radio show/web site. "A collection of safe, effective home & herbal remedies, vitamins, & dietary supplements for almost any problem." But one of the things I like is that it is so balanced. They share stories of people for whom the remedies worked, but also those for whom they didn't work. They have an alphabetical listing, not only of ailments & symptoms, but also of herbs and just about everything you would like to know about each one. The authors were skeptical of many of these remedies when they first heard of them, but the flood of mail from people with positive results convinced them. Try one of their most well known remedies like raisins soaked in gin for arthritis, or vinegar for foot fungus (quite common for those who have to wear military boots for long periods of time). Or check out our article below for a suggestion to get rid of diarrhea. This is a book to have handy on your shelf and ready to use. It has become one of my old faithfuls, when ailments come up, already. To read more about the book, click HERE.  You can also visit the People's Pharmacy web site at... http://www.peoplespharmacy.com. As always be sure to check with your doctor regarding any medical matters.

Macaroon Remedy for Diarrhea?

One of the People's Pharmacy most popular remedies is coconut macaroons for chronic diarrhea. They were skeptical at first, and even chuckled when they received a letter from a listener who shared the remedy with them. He had had Crohn's disease for 40 yrs and had a constant problem with diarrhea, and said that since he started eating 2 macaroons a day, that the diarrhea went away & hasn't returned. They thought it was humorous and shared it with their listeners/readers. But then the letters starting pouring in from people who tried it with great success, including people with diarrhea due to cancer surgeries and even travelers' diarrhea. Just a warning, more isn't always better, some people who ate more than 2 a day had problems with constipation. To read more about it, check out the web sites in the article above. As always, check with your doctor regarding any medical matters.

POST IT...in your medical reference book under "diarrhea."

Recipe: EASY Monkey Bread

This is a nice easy bread to do for breakfast when company is visiting, makes it look like you slaved all morning.

bulletPreheat oven to 300F.
bulletGrease a bundt pan.
bulletSlice 3 large cans of regular size biscuits (usually 10oz cans) into 4ths.
bulletScatter half the pieces into the bottom of the pan.
bulletCombine 1C butter (or margarine), 1 1/2C brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, and 1C chopped pecans or walnuts.
bulletHeat until butter is melted either in a microwave or small pan on stove.
bulletMix together well.
bulletPour half of butter mixture on top of the pieces of biscuit in the pan.
bulletDrop the rest of the biscuit pieces on top of that, and pour the remainder of the butter mixture on top of that.
bulletBake for about 45 min or until top pieces are golden brown.
bulletRemove from oven and let sit in the pan for 5 min.
bulletThen invert onto a serving dish.
bulletCut into slices with a bread knife.
bulletWhy do they call it monkey bread?...because people tend to keep picking pieces off of it to eat like monkeys can do with their food. :-)
bulletDo not try to skip the part where it sits in the pan for 5 min or it may all fall apart when you try to invert it onto a plate.

Final Words

JOKE (with a big thank you to Connie N. :-)

This isn't really a joke, but I thought it was humorous. "How sundaes got their name: Amazing as it may seem, late last century, sodas were seen as too exciting to be served on a Sunday, the Lord's day--it was feared by community busybodies that the fizz would whip the female population into a frenzy of desire. But an enterprising entrepreneur saved the day--he served ice cream instead and the 'sundae' was born. (Personally, I think that ice cream is much more thrilling than soda.)"

QUOTE Advice on Deciding Who You Truly Do Love

"Whose phone calls or visits are never unwanted or too long? Do you see her (or his?) face? Who would you most like to have in your life to ward off moments of loneliness? Do you see her face? When you travel, who would make your travels more enjoyable? Do you see her face? When you're in pain, who would you most like to comfort you? Do you see her face? When something wonderful happens in your life--a promotion at work, a successful refinancing--who do you want to share the news with? Do you see her face? Whose face appears to you, my friend? Whose face?"

--from episode of "Gilmore Girls" on the WB network.
