Xrays Damage Film

One thing that photo labs are starting to see around the country is developed photos with hazing. When the customers are asked about the film, the majority said they had put the undeveloped film in their checked baggage when they flew. With security at an all time high, the strength of the xrays used to screen checked luggage has been increased to the point of causing damage to the film. Ask to have it hand inspected, or place it in your carry on baggage (the strength of the machines used for carry ons are not as high as the checked bags). Of course, this does not affect digital cameras.

Grave Locator

If you are making your family history a part of your summer trips, and would like to find the grave of a particular family member in a national cemetery, go to... http://www.cem.va.gov.  It will tell you where the person is buried, what cemetery and what grave site. Let's not forget those who sacrificed so much for us all.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

Along the same lines (appreciating the sacrifice), the Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current president that recognizes the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans. It can be requested and received by veterans and veterans' next of kin. You can also request multiple copies for other family members. There isn't a particular form for requesting it, contact your local VA office, or call 1-202-565-4964 for more information. You can also email pmc@mail.va.gov  for more info only (you cannot request a PMC by email). You will need copies of the veteran's discharge papers and death certificate. This might be a touching gesture for the widow or widower left behind to receive.

POST IT...under "Funeral Homes."

Missionary Dinners

Here's an idea for generating lots of interest in the missionaries that your place of worship supports. Assign volunteers from the congregation a specific country whose missionary work is supported by the church. The volunteers should completely submerse themselves in info about the country. Depending on how many volunteers are available, a group of volunteers that are assigned to the same country can divide their studies up with one person studying the food, others clothing, artifacts, musical instruments, tools, and culture. Then plan the event to educate the rest of the congregation. Each country should have a table(s) and lay out info about the country, foods from that country, playing background music from the country, and the guests should be encouraged to ask lots of questions about the country to try to stump the "experts". Perhaps even have small token gifts for people who stump the volunteers. Church members can move from table to table learning about all the different countries. You could also do this with a progressive dinner, with each house representing the culture and food of different countries for different courses of the meal.

POST IT...with the missionary committee of your place of worship.

Final Words

JOKE

"But pastor," lamented the young husband in for counseling, "whenever we quarrel, my wife always becomes historical." "You mean 'hysterical,'" said the pastor. But the husband said, "No, historical. She's always digging up my past."

QUOTE

Our pastor told this story of when he was a boy and stepped on a board with nails in it. His father came, looked at the board with nails stuck in his foot, grabbed the ends of the board, and told his son, "Grit your teeth and trust me." He asked his father, "It's not going to hurt?" His father said, "I didn't say that, I said to trust me." Our pastor compared it to our relationship with God, and difficulties that we may have to endure. We know it is for the best, it may hurt, but we just have to trust Him.
