MAKE A NOTE!! -- June 2nd, 2004CIRCULATION - 42,132 (From Around the World! :-) WEB SITE VISITORS - 87,263 A Free Twice Monthly (1st and 3d Wednesday of each month) Ezine with (Hopefully) Useful Info on a Wide Variety of Topics NEXT ISSUE TO BE PUBLISHED ON/ABOUT JUNE 16TH, 2004
NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * My Favorite: Books * * * * * * * Tourist Web SitesAs you prepare to head out for all those touristy places, don't neglect to check out their web sites for info that will make your visit easier, cheaper, and more informative. Many sites will have discount coupons you can print out, ways to buy advance tickets, or info on the location to help you learn more. As I was perusing sites for an upcoming visit by relatives, I found that tickets to the Washington Monument are free, but usually sell out rather quickly. BUT you can buy advance tickets online or by phone. I found out that there is a shuttle that runs from the NEW Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Chantilly, to the Air & Space Museum on the Mall in DC. Shenandoah Caverns in VA offer discount coupons, and after checking out the info on the site I have an idea of what I want to make a point of seeing, and the questions I want to ask. You may even uncover a mystery...after doing my tourist homework before visiting the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in '87, I was looking forward to seeing "Danae" by Rembrandt. Not seeing it on exhibit, I asked the tour guide about it. She looked uncomfortable and finally admitted that 2 yrs before a man had slashed it and thrown acid on it. I was surprised that I hadn't heard anything about it on the international news. I even ran into someone in the art business who hadn't heard about it. It has since been restored (as best they could) and went back on display in '98. Use my favorite search site to find your tourist spots... http://www.google.com. But remember to enter in the place you are going with hyphens in between to cut down on false hits (e.g. Washington-Monument, Air-and-Space-Museum, etc). Have your children check over the site before you go, and have them select one thing they want to see, one question to ask, and one fact to share with others. POST IT...under "Travel Agents" in the yellow pages. * * * * * * * Company/Employer Credit CardsIf your employer offers you a credit card to use on company business, should you use it? Many companies, the military, and other government agencies issue these cards. What they may not tell you is that if something goes wrong and they are not paid off appropriately, then it is YOUR credit that gets destroyed. We have acquaintances that actually had it happen to them. The credit bureaus don't care who was supposed to make the payment, they only care whose name is on the card. As an alternative, you might consider the benefits of using your own personal credit card. Now granted, if we are talking big ticket items then you may not be able to use your own. That will depend a lot on how quickly you are reimbursed for things you have to purchase. But if you are able to do it, then you could use one of those airline mile cards and earn free trips (as long as it is YOUR credit card, I've been told this is legal, not so if you are using a company card, unless you have their permission). If you are the name on the bill and the one responsible, you are also able to earn motel reward points. So talk it over with your employer, take a close look at your company spending and personal budget, and see if it might be right for you. Currently we have enough points for 4 free airline trips, and 4 nights of free motel rooms (2 at a resort). Now if we can just find the time for a vacation...:-) POST IT...with your credit card bills. * * * * * * * Kids, Make a ListAll kids go through it sometime in their lives, the "I hate you!" moment, or
something along the same lines. The next time that happens have the child make a
list of ways THAT family member shows they love them, makes life easier for
them, or helps them towards their goals. The older the child, the longer the
list should be. If they try to slip in something mean or negative ("She's not
TOO ugly."), then have them do an extra number for every mean line (e.g.
additional 3 good for every 1 mean, or 5 extra good for each mean, etc.). Have
them read the list aloud to the person. Children too young to write can draw a
picture of the nice things. As far as how many things to list, may I suggest
starting with one item for every year of age. If someone is unkind again within
a short period of time, consider doubling the number (no repeats), and perhaps
take away one of the things the person puts on their list (e.g. "you take me to
see friends"...none of that for a week, "you wash the dishes for me"...make them
wash their own dishes, but of course you wouldn't take away things like signs of
affection). POST IT...near kids' chore chart or on fridge. * * * * * * * Aspirin Substitute??CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR to see if the herb White Willow might work as an aspirin substitute for you. Aspirin originally started out as a product of the White Willow tree with few side effects, but once the labs got hold of it and isolated the "active ingredient" they also had problems with side effects like stomach upset. Many physicians/studies tout the benefits of taking a small amount of aspirin a day, but many of us can't do it because of problems with side effects. Many are able to use the White Willow herb as a substitute. But as with anything to do with your health, DO NOT TAKE WHITE WILLOW UNTIL YOU HAVE OKAYED IT WITH YOUR DOCTOR TO MAKE SURE IT IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR TREATMENT REGIMEN. For more information about the history of aspirin, go to...
http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blaspirin.htm POST IT...with your doctor's number to check with him, or on the calendar with your next doctor's appointment. * * * * * * * Recipe: Tomato Cucumber SalsaFor those of you who like your salsa a little lighter than the norm, here is a yummy recipe to try out. Mix together 1/2 medium peeled/diced cucumber, 1/2 heaping tsp garlic salt, 1/2 small can (4.5 oz can) of mild chopped green chilies (if you like it spicier then throw the whole can in), 2 large firm diced tomatoes, 1/2 C onion (whatever you prefer white, yellow, red, or green, or mix them if you like), 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp oil, 1/2 tblsp dried cilantro (or 1 tbsp fresh), and 1/8C white vinegar. Mix well and let it sit for a little bit to mix the flavors, then enjoy with your favorite tortilla chips. This is a beautifully colored salsa, great for parties. But so good, you may want to eat it with a fork. POST IT...in your recipe box, and on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: June 1st, 2000 IssueThis is the back issue to go to for information on how to buy the swimsuit that will flatter your figure the most. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Missing Child Info: SHAWN SHREWSBURYSHAWN SHREWSBURY (5-yr-old, white male, black hair, brown eyes, 3', 44 lbs,

They stay motivated by anticipating the end of the journey. Since I tend to be easily distracted, I travel somewhat differently--one step at a time, with many pauses in between." --Hannah Nyala (1959- , mom, author, tracker), from her book, "Point Last
