Wegman's grocery stores have a wonderful feature on their web site. Once you do the free registration, then you can access their Shopping List page. There you can click on all the items you need to have on your shopping list. But even better, once you click on "Print the List," it automatically groups things by category and by aisle for whatever Wegman's store is closest to you. Now even if your store aisles are different from Wegman's, it will still have grouped the products the way most stores display them. This will cut down on those backtracking trips, when you realize you missed something on your list. Normally I take forever to learn a new store, but this web site makes it easy, and I think easier for you too, no matter where you shop. For those of you with a Wegman's nearby (PA, MD, VA), they just opened near us and have the cheapest prices around, best customer service, and yet you feel as though you are in an upscale grocery store. So shop there if you can, but even if you can't, definitely check out the shopping list feature. Check it out at... https://my.wegmans.com/php/login.asp?url=/shoppinglist POST IT...on your computer, and shopping list. * * * * * * * Cicada Attack ComingFor those of you who haven't heard the news yet, the cicadas are coming (AKA locusts). If you live anywhere from GA to NY, and out to TN, then you are about to experience first hand, the 17 yr Cicadas. You may have had some experience with smaller groups, known to start out a low chirping in unison, raising to a high pitched shriek and then dropping back down again, and starting over. This particular group is massive, and some people are actually planning vacations, so they will be gone while the Cicadas are active. While they are around less than a month, they are very noisy, can do some serious damage to young trees in particular, and have been known to be attracted to noisy machinery. While they do not bite, they do have a "beak" that, if they mistake you for a tree branch, may feel like a pinprick. But the biggest thing will just be the annoyance of the multitude, the noise, and the shed "skins". Here are some ways to prepare, if you aren't able to go out of town like the others. Do NOT plant any young trees at this time, wait until after they have gone. If you have young trees that you want to protect, buy netting (ask local garden store for which type is best) to throw over the trees. Purchase netting now before they run out. Sprays will not work. If you sleep during the day (usually they are quiet at night), or like to sleep past dawn, then invest in some good ear plugs (available where gun supplies are sold). As soon as you see ANY cicadas, THAT is the time to do mowing, weed whacking, or anything else that requires outdoor machinery. That way, you probably won't have to use them again until the cicadas are gone, and there won't be as many of them around yet. Make sure the screens on your windows are securely attached, and holes patched if necessary. If you have outside pets, consider making inside arrangements for them during this time. Make sure not to plan any outside activities for this time of year (May/June...they cannot pinpoint the exact time they will start to emerge). They may not truly "bite," but unless you are into bugs, these are not attractive little creatures. You can get a look at them, & the damage they can cause, at this web site... http://www.agnr.umd.edu/users/hgic/cicadas/gallery1.html You can click on each photo to enlarge...IF you really want a closer look. POST IT...on your calendar and shopping list if necessary. * * * * * * * Uniq Fruit (try something new)Our family enjoys trying new things, but we weren't quite sure what to make of this "new" fruit from Jamaica. It sort of looked like a sunken, wrinkled, large grapefruit. Turns out the way it looks outside, bears no relation to the inside, which is sort of a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, very juicy and sweet. Interestingly enough, it came about naturally (not through selective breeding). So the next time you're in the grocery store, be adventurous and teach your family to be the same, try something new. May I recommend star fruit, kiwi (sort of a green cross between a strawberry & banana flavor), and the Uniq (also known as the Ugli) fruit. For those readers who may grow citrus or know someone who does, the growing of Uniq fruit might be a good thing to get into, since at this time it is only found in Jamaica. Check it out at... http://www.wegmans.com/kitchen/ingredients/produce/fruit/uniq.asp POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Automated Email InvitationsThis is another one of those free sites that provide a great service to save you time and money. You can go to this site, design your own email invitation, make a list of the addresses you want it sent to, ask people to RSVP (the site keeps track of the responses for you), even have a potluck or some other list of things to bring and as people select what they want then that item is removed from the list (might be a great idea for showers as well). They also provide maps to the event and other info as needed. This site is like the free greeting card sites, in that, they make money from the ads that people see when they go to the site whether to make an invite or RSVP. If you would prefer not to have those ads be about alcohol or other "mature" material, then you can click on "Just for Kids", even if you are having a gathering of adults. Don't forget that while most of us have come into the computer age, there are still some people (you know who they are) who think it rude to do invites (or thank you notes) by email, so be sure to print a page out for them and stick it in the mail. Check them out at... www.evite.com POST IT...on your calendar and where you keep holiday/birthday info. * * * * * * * Recipe: Corned Beef & CabbageOne thing I discovered in our local grocery store, as I was picking out a corned beef for St. Paddy's Day, is that many people aren't quite sure how to cook it. Corned Beef has been "pickled" in order to make it tender & give it that distinctive flavor. But for many of us, we find the flavor a bit too overpowering. So here's my mild version...first thing in the morning, take the Corned Beef (CB) out of the wrapper (toss the seasoning packet too), rinse it off well, place in a large pot, cover with cold water, and place in fridge. Every 2 hours or so, change the water, you'll see the film floating on top of the water. About noon, pour off the water and brown the CB on the stove. When you are finished, add water to almost cover the CB completely, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer, and keep lid on. About 3pm, turn the CB over, continue to simmer. About an hour before you want to eat dinner, place cut up cabbage into the water with the CB, bring to boiling, then reduce to simmer, continue to simmer for about an hour. Then pour off water and serve the CB and cabbage. Happy St. Patrick's Day! This is a good time to go, between the early birds, and the last minute folks. Have you given up on your resolutions? Why not make a new one; I like starting on April Fool's Day myself. Read the article for more helps. Read about how taking calcium keeps you from losing more, NOT replaces what is lost. Plus more advice on decluttering, and resources for dog owners. The mother attacked a social worker at the Dept. of Human Services, then fled with her son. They are believed to be in the company of a 30 year old black male, James Edward Browning, who may have ties in Cedar Rapids, IA. Police have also asked the public to be on the watch for 2 vehicles that may lead them to Deven...a gold 2001 Chevy Cavalier with the license plate 430-CGQ and a black 2002 Ford Escort with the license plate number 887-IWX (both Iowa plates).
