Our Apologies

The Make a Note would like to offer its apologies for the way our last issue came out. Due to a computer text error, much of the issue had the appearance of a hyperlink (all in blue and underlined). We believe that the problem has now been corrected. Please know that we encourage ALL of our readers to report things like that, or any other problems with the issues. Don't assume that someone else has let us know, often they have not. Computers are funny things, and often mysterious (to me). It is amazing how one single character left out or put in the wrong place can make such a huge difference. So we thank you for your patience, as we are learning too. And, as always, we always welcome constructive criticism on any aspect of our ezine.

TV Games & Others Online

Are you a Jeopardy fan? Or perhaps Wheel of Fortune gets you spinning? Or maybe you just like geography or word games. No matter what your preference, you are likely to find a free online version you can play on certain web sites. In the case of Jeopardy, Wheel, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, you play by yourself. But there are some geography and word game sites that you can play against other players online OR alone. So check out these sites if you are in a game playing mood. MSN Games (68 Free Games-Jeopardy & Wheel under "Pop Culture Games") http://zone.msn.com/en/root/default.htm  Millionaire http://abc.go.com/primetime/millionaire/millionaire_home.html  Geography Games against other players http://www.geosense.net  (Our Thanks to Lynn Hogan's "Homeschooler's Notebook" for bringing this site to our attention. To subscribe to her ezine, go to http://www.stretcher.com/menu/subscrib.cfm  And scroll down to "Homeschoolers' Notebook" and hit subscribe.) Word Games (just enter in a name & password...anything...and then it will take you to a page where you can pick what kind of game to play against other people) http://www3.funster.com  There are lots more games out there to play. This is fun for all ages, but is ideal for kids who may be struggling in a particular subject. Try entering in the subject they have difficulty in, then "games-online" (e.g. spelling-games-online).

POST IT...on your computer and have fun.

TDYs to the Airline's Gates

If your military loved one is heading to Iraq, you may be able to accompany them all the way to the gate and wait with them for the departing plane to start boarding. Most military know that the military charter flights are fraught with delays, sometimes up to 20 hours (and you think your commercial flight was bad?). The Transportation Security Administration asked airport security directors to develop some procedures so that families can accompany a service member all the way to the gate (not just to the security checkpoint) and wait with them, they should also be able to go all the way to the gate to meet the incoming flight. Since these new guidelines were just set up in January, it would be a good idea to check with your local airport security director's office to find out what is involved. If they are unaware of the new guidelines, then you should ask them to contact the TSA or do it yourself. Those military families deserve every moment together they can squeeze in.

Stuck in Snow?

Doesn't look like winter is going away anytime soon. So here are some tips for getting your car unstuck from the snow. Prevention/preparation...keep your gas tank as full as possible, the extra weight helps you get traction. Keep a bag of dirt/sand in your truck, and perhaps even a snow shovel. So now you're stuck...first, do NOT spin the tires. This will tend to turn the snow surface into ice and just make things worse. If you have passengers in the car, try to concentrate the weight over the tire that is spinning (have everyone crowd into that corner temporarily). Never, EVER, get out of the car and get behind or in front of a car trying to free itself from the snow, all it takes is one slip and a stuck car may be the least of your worries. Try to put things under the wheels to get some traction, with the engine off of course. Ideas might include dirt, gravel from a nearby road, branches from trees (do not break them off personal property without permission), pieces of cardboard, rocks, or wood. If necessary, try to dig the snow away from the tire with the snow shovel (if you have one). If you have floor mats, take one and put it carpet side down on the snow in front of the tire. In all these situations, try to wedge the material where the tire meets the snow. If you are unable to free yourself, signal a passing car for help or use your cell to call for a tow (ask your mechanic BEFORE you need one, to recommend a towing service & keep the number in the car). Never try to drive in remote areas in bad weather conditions. Before you put that snow shovel in your car, or use it at home, spray it with non-stick cooking spray to keep the snow from sticking to it (thanks for our readers who contributed that little tip).

Recipe: Snow Cone Ideas

What fun is snow without snow cones? Think ahead and if snow is predicted, place a clean bowl in a place outside to collect the snow (avoid areas where there is any animal/bird activity). Once you have enough snow for cones or bowls, bring inside and quickly pour one of the following over the snow: small jello box dissolved in 1C of cold water (you could dissolve it in hot water, then get it cold with ice cubes before bringing the snow in), fruit juices (if made from concentrate leave out some of the water to make it stronger than usual), store bought shelf concentrate already in a liquid state. Depending on the snow, you may also be able to gently stir in your favorite brand of prepared instant pudding. Have fun and

Back Issue Treasure: April 1st, 2000 Issue

Check out the April 1st, 2000 issue for more good Make a Note info. The political scene is certainly heating up, so check out the article on "Tactics on Defending the Faith". While this resource was written to instruct Christians on ways to defend their faith, I think it is THE best resource I've ever seen on debate tactics of any kind. Is your neighborhood as safe as you think it is? You can find out in our article that tells you how to check for S*x Offenders who might be living right down the street (the reason I write it that way, is because some provider filters will block our message if I write it out). You can see the Space Station passing in the sky above you, if you read this article and know where to look. Total your car in our recent snowstorms? Then check out Consumer Reports Auto Issue Online for the latest info.
