Thinning Hair? Flaky Scalp?

If you have thinning hair or problems with a flaky scalp, you are definitely going to want to read this article closely. The thing that amazes me the most about this product, I'm about to recommend, is that I didn't hear about it sooner. I've always lost quite a bit of hair (some hairdressers have actually asked me if I was on chemo), but early last year I started losing so much that it even started to alarm ME. When I would wash my hair, I actually had to stop and rinse the loose hair off my hands more than once, or the hair would get tangled in my fingers. My doctor did tests, couldn't find any reason for the loss, attributed it to that all time catch all of "stress," and said it would go away. It didn't. My hairdresser recommended a product line called NIOXIN, I bought the starter pack of shampoo, conditioner, and a spray on treatment. Literally in one week's time I went from losing handfuls of hair to only about 3-4 hairs whenever I shampooed. I am NOT exaggerating! I know this article is going to sound like an ad (no I'm not getting any money out of this), but I have never seen something work this well and this fast. After the drastic improvement in my hair, I did more research into the products and you can read more about them at...
http://www.nioxin.com I would encourage you to read through the FAQ's in particular. But I think the site is not as clear on which products you should use for your hair (different products are recommended if you chemically treat your hair or not, and whether your hair is slightly or excessively thin at this time), so I would recommend that you CALL them and request an info packet on the Nioxin at 1-800-628-9890 or (out of country) 1-770-944-1308. The info packet has a complete list of their Nioxin products with a little flow chart to help you find the right ones for you, along with a list of styling aids. My understanding of the products, without going into too much technical detail, is that they make the scalp environment healthier, making hair healthier/stronger, making it less likely to fall out, and increasing the growing phase of the hairs. It will NOT bring back dead hair follicles, but many times follicles are not dead, but in the resting (dormant) phase. When the initial 3 products worked so well, we purchased the whole line and it has improved the appearance of our hair even more. It is shinier and "fluffier". These products are only available at salons and they do have a salon finder on the site. But call around, when I called for prices (ask each store how many ounces their largest bottle of shampoo costs and figure out price/oz to compare) I found prices ranging anywhere from 76 cents/oz to $5.05/oz (no, that is NOT a typo). Since the word hasn't gotten out yet about the Nioxin, look for a salon that is willing to order products that they do not have in stock for you. Usually these will also be the salons that have a better selection anyway. Also see if your salon has some kind of frequent buyer card or program. If you have trouble getting the products ask the salon for the name/phone number of the distributor they get the products from, to help you find them. [If you live in the Sterling/Leesburg, VA area, email me (make-a-note@att.net)  if you'd like the name of the store I found in our area to save yourself some calls.] When this line worked so well for me, I sent out an email to friends/family telling them about it. Turns out several people had already tried it, clearing up flaky scalps as quickly as it fixed my hair falling out, and also people happy with their styling products not realizing it was a line. My hairdresser says they recommend this to people (Women AND Men) who are losing hair due to heredity, chemo, stress, or even pregnancy, and she hasn't talked to anyone who wasn't happy with it yet. Some salons do work on a commission, so make sure to give credit where it is due if your hairdresser is at that salon, or someone is helpful at your visit. Just a quick heads up about a couple of things...you may miss in the material that some of their products do create a tingling sensation when used, sort of like a peppermint cool/hot feeling, this is normal. Some of their products will also cause a temporary redness on the scalp, this also is normal. But be sure to read ALL the info on the products before using them to make sure they are right for you. And please do let me know how they work for you, if you try them. These products are not cheap, and you need to keep using them, but they do work. On the other hand, I've talked to people who have used the "hair growing" products that used to be prescription only, and have heard complaints that it is SOOO very expensive and only grew "peach fuzz", as one gentleman called it, in the people I knew who used it. The Nioxin products are NOT as expensive as the "hair growing" products, but they are not cheap either. But I did get results using only 3 of the products, so even using some of their products seems to help. POST IT...on your shopping list, with your hair products/styling tools, send to your friends who are thinning, flaking, pregnant, on chemo, or might know someone who IS thinning, flaking, pregnant or on chemo. This stuff is amazing. And if you have a family history of thinning hair, don't forgot to read up on their Semodex line as well that is used alternating with their regular line.

Other Hair Helps

If the products above are out of your price range, or if you would like to help your hair out even more while using the products, here are a few tips. Find a good hairstylist who can help you find a cut that is low maintenance. The fewer chemicals (coloring, perms, relaxers, highlights, etc) that you use on the hair, the better it will do. There's a reason they tell pregnant women not to use certain hair chemicals while pregnant, folks. Find a style that doesn't require blow drying, the heat also isn't good for the hair. Find a style that doesn't require curlers, curling irons, or other styling tools that pull at your hair. Usually hair does better if it is shorter (less weight to put pressure on the roots), and doesn't have to be pulled back with clips or bands. In other words, you are really looking for a wash & go style, that can dry naturally. Don't fight your hair's natural tendencies. How many people with straight hair do everything possible to make it curl, and vice versa? Your hair will usually be the most attractive when allowed to go it's own way as much as possible. Not only will your hair be healthier if you follow these tips, but you will save money on all those treatments/products you were using, and think of the TIME you will save not doing all these things. I think you will be happy with the result.

POST IT...near your hair products/tools.

"Horton Hears a Who"

For those of you celebrating Sanctity of Human Life Week/Sunday, a great book for even the youngest children is "Horton Hears a Who" by Dr. Seuss,  because of the chorus, "A person's a person, no matter how small". We make a tradition of reading this book on SOHL Sunday every year.

POST IT...on your shopping list, and mark your calendar for this year and the next.

Slick Sleds

We may still get a bit of snow before winter is over, and here's a tip for all those snow sleds out there...spray a non-stick cooking oil spray onto the area where the sled meets the snow, and let dry a bit before using. Should help keep the snow from sticking & make the sled go a little faster. This might stain clothes a bit if there is contact, but probably no more so than rubbed in dirt or grass. You can always use our laundry tip (April 16th, 1997)in our very first Make a Note issue to get the stains out a little easier (usually). See our back issue instructions below to go to that issue. Always monitor children when they are sledding so they aren't heading for anything dangerous.

POST IT...on the wall near where sleds are stored.

Recipe: Best Bean Salad Ever (from Elizabeth L.)

This is MY title for the salad, not Elizabeth's. But after trying it at a church potluck, I thought it was the best one I've ever tasted. When I was trying to find the chef, everyone I asked said, "no, it wasn't me, but it sure was good wasn't it." So here's the recipe for you to try, and let me know what YOU think. :-) For the dressing stir together:

bullet3Tbsp. oil (Elizabeth used olive.)
bullet3 Tbsp. cider vinegar

Combine the following and pour dressing over:

bullet1 can (16 oz.) kidney beans, rinsed & drained
bullet1 can (15 oz.) black beans, rinsed & drained
bullet1 can (11 oz.) Mexicorn, drained
